Cheadle U3A Cycling Group Health and Safety Advice and Disclaimer DISCLAIMERCycling is an enjoyable way to exercise, however, as cycling involves the use of public roads, it carries an element of risk.Cheadle U3A endorses the requirements in the Highway Code for cycling and cyclists, all group members should be aware ofthese requirements and recommendations. A copy of the Highway Code is available from the Cycling Group Leader ifmembers wish to look at the requirements. Group members must take full responsibility for their own participation in this activity. They must be aware of Health and Safetyissues relating to cycling. Cheadle U3A promotes and encourages members to participate in the cycling programme. However, neither Cheadle U3A northe Programme Leader/Organiser of the Rides(s) accept responsibility for any circumstances affecting the Health or Safety ofthe Riders in the party. Provided the leaders are U3A members and the rides are organised by U3A Groups they automatically receive Public Liabilityinsurance cover through the Third Age Trust. This is designed to protect leaders against claims for damage to property and forinjury or death which might have been occasioned on the ride. This is NOT a personal accident insurance for riders andaccordingly participants on rides are responsible for their own Health and Safety and the safe keeping of their equipment, clothing and belongings. In addition to observing the advice below, participants on Rides should follow the advice/instructions of the Ride Leader inorder to minimise any risk to themselves and they should also ensure that they do not endanger any others in the party.
HEALTH AND SAFETY ADVICE RIDE LEADERSRide Leaders have a duty of Care not to lead those following into danger:• The Ride Leader should appoint a "back marker" who will be issued with a suitable twoway radio, where available, to
permit communication between the front and rear of the group.• Ride Leaders are advised to make occasional stops to allow the group to reassemble.• Riders must never be left behind.• It is recommended that Ride Leaders carry out a recce of the route in order that they are able to advise riders of any
potential hazards e.g. hills, steep descents, road works etc. RIDESEach rider has Duty of Care to ensure that he/she avoids hazards to themselves and to fellow riders and to take all reasonablesteps to avoid putting their companions into any danger:• Cheadle U3A promotes safe cycling so recommends the use of a suitable, correctly sized and fitted, HELMET.• For rides on ordinary roads with normal road traffic it is recommended to wear a "High Vis" jacket.• Riders must ensure that their bicycle is maintained in good working order.• Riders should carry the appropriate equipment to permit emergency repairs e.g. spare inner tube, puncture repair kit,
pump etc.• Cheadle U3A recommends that all bicycles used on Rides are fitted with a bell.• If an individual requires a rest during the ride they can ask the "back marker" to contact the ride leader to request a break.• Riders should not ride ahead of the Leader(s).• Riders are advised to wear suitable clothing for the expected weather conditions. Or to carry waterproof clothing in the
case of unexpected wet weather.• Riders are advised to carry sufficient water to avoid dehydration, and a snack to eat to maintain energy.• Riders are advised to take sufficient medication.• During the ride each individual should keep a sharp look out for any unusual hazards and, if spotted, advise those
following to take extra care.• Awareness and caution are the watchwords at all times, remember this is a Ride not a Race.
