C. From the End of the Seven Years’ War in 1763 to

the Year 1783

After the end of the war the Electoral Hanover Army was reduced

significantly. Simultaneously a regulation went into effect that every

two regiments in the infantry and the cavalry (with the exception of

the dragoons) should be condensed into one new regiment of two

battalions. This process proceeded gradually and was completed in

1776; it was accomplished each time a regimental commander left or

died.

The light troop units that were formed during the war were

disbanded. The Freytag Rifle Corps, the Luckner Hussar Regiment

and the Scheither Corps continued to exist within the two new light

dragoon regiments that were established in 1763 and only gradually

met the above stated regulations.

The military unit lists of the cavalry and infantry regiments looked as

Some of the infantry regiments deserve special recognition. The 1st

battalions of the Regiments von Reden [3], de La Motte [5] and von

Hardenberg [6] were stationed in Gibraltar from 1775 to 1784 in order

to replace English troops there, who were needed in America.

Simultaneously and for the exact same purpose, the second battalions

of the Regiments Prince Ernst [8] and von Goldacker [11] were

stationed at Minorca. Both of the newly formed units (and for the first

found themselves even farther from home in 1781. They saw action in

India against the French and confederations of German princes in the

service of the East India Company; not until 1791/92 did they return.

Based upon new fundamentals the militia establishment was

reconfigured in 1766 through the formation of ten militia regiments.

They received the designations Militia Regiments Hanover,1 Celle,2

Göttingen,9 and Diepholz.10 Finally to be mentioned are four garrison

regiments that were also established in 1766. They existed more or
