FOREWORD

With more than 30 years experience in the design and supply of bespoke steering solutions Titan Motorsport are market leaders

in manual steering solutions.

A wide range of solutions are possible and each design is unique to the customer. Titan representatives will work with the

customer to create a unique drawing and specification. Once the specification is agreed then machining of the cast housing, rack

bar and other detail can start.

In addition to manual steering solutions Titan also off electronic power assistance in various configurations – column power

assistance and rack assistance. Titan will work with the customer to design a bespoke steering solution to suit the customer

requirement.

OEM steering solutions are supported through to aftermarket with rebuild and service options. Spare parts are stocked to allow

rebuild shops to utilise the wide range of spares Titan carry for steering solutions.

CUSTOMISABLE MANUAL STEERING RACK

Using standard components, we can create bespoke solutions to suit your application.

Other material can be used on request, for example magnesium, for the housing.

In selecting a steering solution the customer needs to make some of the following key decisions;

1. Eccentric or fixed pinion (ratio interchangeable or not)

2. Pinion location centred or offset (single seater or clubman’s style)

3. Housing Extensions

4. Steering speed/ratio (mm of rack bar per column rev)

5. End joint options (clevis, compact or dauphine)

6. Gaiters

7. Clamps

As every steering rack, is either completely bespoke or using standard components, the price heavily depends on design

requirement. Please contact our sales team for more information.

Care should be taken to understand orientation for steering systems where the steering rack is in front of the king pin or behind

the king pin of the uprights – this will affect whether the pinion is above or below the rack bar.

ECCENTRI C HOUS ING

In this design the pinion is held in an eccentric housing which is adjustable. This means the pinion could be changed for a

different type in the future – for example if the customer wants to change the ratio (speed) of the rack using the pinion only (the

rack bar will carry over). This makes the eccentric housing perfect for car development or a change in driving style or application.

Titan Motorsport have 2 casting types to allow different pinion locations – centred and offset, so deciding how far to one side

your pinion needs to be will affect the original casting selection.

F IXED CENTRE HO USING

A more cost effective option is to select a fixed centre housing which is machined to accept one pinion. The downside of a fixed

centre housing is the pinion and rack cannot be exchanged for a different combination.

Titan Motorsport have 2 casting types to allow different pinion locations – centred and offset, so deciding how far to one side

your pinion needs to be will affect the original casting selection.

HOUSI NG EXTENSI ONS

If you require a longer housing on one side for example then extensions of 250mm, 350mm or 400mm can be included in the

design.

To measure you existing solution it will be necessary to measure how far the end joint will move for exactly one revolution of

the pinion. How fast the wheels turn will then depend on geometry at the outboard end and how far from the king pin pivot the

arm is.

ALTERNATIVE MANUAL STEERING SOLUTIONS

MANUAL STEER ING RA CK S

A complete bespoke steering rack can be designed and manufactured if your needs don’t fit into our customisable range, for

example the pinion can be angled to the housing if needed.

Housings can be machined from billet aluminium but other material such as magnesium can be used.

Single ended steering racks, internal components only and other special constructions are always considered and undertaken.

CASE STUDY - THE 1000MPH STEERING RACK

Titan was approached in April 2012 by the Bloodhound project to design and manufacture a steering system for their land speed

record vehicle, with which they aim to achieve 1,000 mph.

Titan manufacture steering racks for a wide range of vehicles but the load requirements, environmental conditions and space

constraints meant that for Bloodhound, a more unconventional system was required.

“The steering requirements for the Bloodhound land speed record car are unusual as we have a 30:1 steering ratio and a

steering lock of 5 degrees, which required us to have a bespoke steering rack” commented Brian Coombs, Engineering Lead –

Mechanical Design of Bloodhound.

As co-operating closely with the project engineers was a necessity, Titan utilised the latest 3D CAD technology to share and

develop design concepts in a collaborative environment. One of the most crucial aspects in the design of the steering rack for

this vehicle is the extreme loads the system will be subjected to. Detailed finite element analysis was utilised to design the

housing, rack bar and bracket to ensure all components within the steering system are able to endure the high loads required.

The environmental conditions Bloodhound will experience are vastly different than those encountered by a car used in race or

road scenarios. Therefore, considerable design consideration was given to ensuring that the rack is sealed off to avoid its

operation being affected by any environmental elements.

The third important design consideration involved the vehicle’s highly aerodynamic nature. The steering rack design was

complicated significantly by the lack of available space. The Titan designers managed to overcome this issue by devising an

innovative system which allowed the pickup points for the track rods to be inboard of the ends of the rack bar and forward of

one of the bulkheads whilst keeping the rack behind the bulkhead. Having successfully designed the system, Titan was then

relied upon to ensure that all components were manufactured and assembled within the required time frame.

“Titan was the perfect company to help us with this design challenge, which they then manufactured and supplied to us very

quickly” said Brian.

Bloodhound recently took the on-schedule delivery of the system for testing, ahead of a possible land speed world record

attempt in 2015.

FAQ

Question 1

Approximately how much will a custom steering rack cost?

Custom racks start at about £500 and can exceed £1000 with some expensive options and machining details.

Question 2

How quickly can a custom steering rack be made?

The target is 3 weeks from point of order and sign off of the engineering drawing.

Question 3

What is the drawing charge?

This is charge Titan collect before any design drawings are made, and that drawing and spec for the steering is then owned by

the customer

Question 4

My rack needs servicing is this possible?

Titan stock a full set of spare parts for steering racks, including service items. Titan also offer a rebuild service for racks if you

would like to send the rack to Titan.

Question 5

I like the sound of power steering - can you help?

Titan offer a bolt on column assist electric power assist unit that is compatible with virtually all the manual racks supplied.

Alternatively Titan can design a solution for you.
