o it is finally December and officially o.k. to get cold. This November cold business
was out of sorts, but we did have threegreat hosted rides. On the 16thAshley’s Menagerie ride @ 10:00 AM and was hosted by Gary & Opal Gardner + granddaughter Ashley.
The annual Pumpkin Pie ride hosted by Mark and Diane Oliver was attended by about 35 folks and ending the month on a high (65F) note were Kathy & Bill Voegel plus Diane Bies with the ride at the newly remodeled Voegel summer mansion on Highway 57. Great food and camaraderie was enjoyed by everyone in attendance.
Our editor, Paul Sluder snuck into town over the Thanksgiving Holiday and did a couple of EBC rides just to remind him why he moved to Florida twenty
years ago. I don’t have to return to Minnesota to know why I moved to Evansville. I just turn on the Vikings game to watch those folks attend a football game with a wind chill of - 09F.

On October 25 the first Trail of Tears Century was held in Grand Rivers, KY. Several EBC members - Bill Johnson, Jim Niethammer, Diane Bies, Colette Loeh-rlein, Tony Gumbel, and Donna Redden- went for the fun. Donna rode the 48 mile route while the rest of us tackled the full century. We stayed overnight Friday at Grand RIvers at a very reasonable and nice hotel while Donna stayed with relatives there. It was a very easy drive and with a 9 AM start it was do-able as a day trip down and back which is what Tony did. The day was perfect with clear skies and warm tem-peratures. There was a nice crowd of about 80 riders on all the routes combined. There were several Strava segments for the more competitive cyclists to test their speeds. We rode on the historic Trail of Tears for a while and near Table Rock, through we didn’t take time to go there. The trees were just beautiful everywhere you looked. We all agreed that this was the most beautifully scenic ride any of us had done. There were 3,000 feet of climb in the first 50 miles. It included one hill with a warning, “This is going to hurt”. It had a false summit which they informed us of with the comment, “Not the top”. Indeed it was a hill! The second 50 miles included a flat stretch along the side of the Ohio River. That was
a really nice change of pace. We crossed the bridge over the Cumberland River as it nears the Ohio twice. There were sheriff cars and other emergency vehicles on each approach to keep us safe as we crossed over and back. It was very well supported! After the ride we were treated to a delicious bowl of chili and a roll at the Lite Side Bakery. This was a great reward for toughing it out for the duration. We were also give a long sleeve t-shitrt and a pint glass for all century ride finishers. This was a great ride! It was very well organized. The marks were bright and easy to follow. The rest stops were plentiful and stocked with Clif bars in addition to fruit, snack foods, water and Gatorade and even peanut butter sandwiches at the “lunch” stop. The roads had great pavement and proved to be challenging but not defeating. There was minimal traffic all day also. We all highly recommend this ride for next year. RIDE NOTES:DECEMBER, 2014
December promises to be a bit more brisk weather than in the summer but we have plenty of fun opportunities to ride. Hopefully we won’t have any more snow till next year!
Our monthly club meeting is scheduled for Thursday December 11. This is your club. Please come to the meeting and offer your input. We have a new venue for our meetings as the Pizza Chef in Newburgh has closed. We are now meeting more centrally at Dave’s Sportsden at 701 N. Weinbach, just north of Franklin on the east side of the street.
Remember we have added weekday rides on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoons at 1:00. These rides are in the warmer part of the day. Check out the schedule and come join the fun.
The Club Century is scheduled for December 6 and 8. We will be doing the Folsomville Route or the Touring Route.
Wednesday night rides will all be at Wesselman Park this month due to the Festival of Lights at Garvin Park. Dinner after the ride is a fun incentive to get out on a cold night. Join us, even if only for a beverage! The lights are on in the park and the pavement is excellent. This ride is for one hour on the very flat road at Wesselman Park. There is minimal traffic. Bring your lights and come well dressed, layers! Riding at night can be very refreshing and invigorating.
We have moved the ride time on Thursday January 1 to 1:00. We will have an EBC hosted ride on New Years Day. We are not definite on it as of now. (We still need to reserve the Old Dam building.) Bring a dish to add to the fun. The club buys fried chicken. We always have plenty for those who are unable or forget to bring a dish. Please come join the fun. We will eat around 2:15 to 2:30 for those who want to just come for the party. Keep your eyes open as an
email blast will be sent out if this changes. It will also be on the EBC Connections Facebook page.
Remember to mark your calendar now for the Annual EBC Banquet to be held on Saturday January 24 at Kirby’s fine dining.
Hope to see you out on the road finishing up any personal goals for 2014.
