The previous permit limited pollutants to amounts that protect ground water quality: nutri-ents, metals, chlorides and pH. In 2005, more than 1.5 million cases of diabetes were diagnosed in Americans age 20 years and older.

Should such a trend continue, 1 in 3 Americans who were born in 2000 will be diagnosed with diabetes in their lifetime.

According to the American Diabetes Association, diabetes is now the fifth-deadliest disease in the United States, with a death rate that has increased by 45 per-cent since 1987.

These figures are high despite what is believed to be a number of unreported diabetes-related deaths each year. Particularly with the elderly, diabetes is often not listed as a cause of death, as doctors often cite multiple chronic conditions as the cause of death in older patients.

For that reason, researchers feel the actual death toll of diabe-tes is far greater than the reported numbers.

In a return engagement, Wil-liam H. Pennell Jr., adminis-trator of Lancaster County, chairman of the Community Corrections Justice Board, and coordinator of county emer-gency services, addressed members of the Woman’s Club of White Stone at their January meeting.

Pennell previously spoke to the group in September on the effects of tropical storm Ernesto and the devastation of Hurricane Isabel. Time con-straints prevented further dis-cussion of other concerns of interest to the club’s members.

This time Pennell spoke on the Windmill Point reconstruc-tion, local road improvements, road refuse pickup, the state car tax, the county real estate tax and other topics as ques-tion arose.

Detector campaign: A smokin’ success!Tom Jones of the Kilmarnock Volunteer Fire Department reports a successful smoke detector campaign in the Kilmarnock area. Members of the fire department went door-to-door in random neighborhoods recently reminding residents to check their detectors and replace the batteries if necessary. The department gave detectors to those who didn’t have them. The detectors were acquired through Radio Shack. In the photo at left, department member Rich Steensma (left) receives a detector from Radio Shack owner Mark Saunders. In the photo at right, department member Bill Mitchell (left), offers Irvington Road resident Poppy Cockrell a smoke detector. The fire department will continue the campaign around future holidays, said Jones.
