ELECTION DAY PRAYER

Prayer text courtesy of www.CatholicPrayerCards.org © 2016

Almighty God, Lord of Life and King of all Nations, we beg You to look kindly upon our country and help us to wisely choose our new leaders. Inform our consciences and en-lighten our judgement, that we may elect those who will mercifully uphold justice and strive to protect the least among us. Help us to discern which candidates will uphold both the letter and spirit of the law. May our nation once again respect religious free-dom, authentic marriage, the importance of family and the value of every human life—from conception to natural death. Heal the divisions which wound our unity and help us to overlook political tensions that keep us from becoming a united force for good. May our great land, built on both personal responsibility and charity towards the less fortunate, always balance prosperity with care for the elderly, poor, the sick and the abandoned. May we elect honest and trustworthy candidates who will always uphold the common good and protect our God-given rights. In concert with the great founders of our nation, may we confidently proclaim, “In God we trust.” Amen.

Puzzles are a kind of trap that we allow ourselves to walk into because we think we can find a way out. Crossword puzzles, Sudoku, word games, Rubik's cubes all invite us to match our wits against the creator of the puzzle. Sometimes, after spend-ing an excessive amount of time in trying to find the solution, we will walk away, only to return a few hours later to perceive the puzzle with new insight and quickly overcome whatever impasse prevented us from solving the puzzle. Weekend Edi-tion Sunday on National Public Radio always has a "Sunday Puzzle." Numerous times the guest participants will mention how they came to the answer through a moment of insight.

In this weekend's Gospel, the Sadducees come forward with a puzzle for Jesus. It is a trap they try to lay for Him, one which they themselves don't even acknowledge since they don't be-lieve in a Resurrection. They ask Jesus whose wife someone will be after the deaths of multiple husbands. It's a puzzle that begs for an answer, especially in a culture in which male rela-

tives are responsible for the widow of a brother. Like any great puzzle solver, Jesus breaks apart their argument with His own burst of insight suggesting that they not limit their thinking to this world.

We are created beings who live in a physical world. But we also have a spiritual dimension to our existence that transcends the limitations of our physicality. So often, our perceptions of the afterlife are limited because we only know the world in which we live. All the descriptions of life in eternity are analo-gous because we have no direct experience of what it is. As Jesus relates in the Gospel, the heavenly realm is completely different from this world. The categories of created reality do not apply. Instead we are risen as children of God. If we try to puzzle out who we are after we die, the answer Jesus would give us is that we are alive to God. ©2013 Liturgical Publications Inc
