It’s been three years since we first released our first Byron Bay guide and so very much has changed. Places have come and gone and as town continues to grow so it’s new haunts in regions around the bay that we’ve decided to add some focus on this time round.

There’s no doubt you’ll notice a strong focus on food withing this guide. Northern New South Wales is fast becoming one of the food capitals of the country so naturally, the our ‘eats’ reign supreme.

There are too many great local cafes, bars and restaurants to cover in a short visit - where you can, extend your trip next time and take a look beyond the beach, head off for a bushwalk, visit a waterhole or discover more of what this stunning north coast and its passionate and creative community has to offer.

Enjoy! x

T H E F A R MEmma and Tom Lane were watching their daughter’s happiness as she ate home grown beans from the family’s vegetable patch when the idea for The Farm came to them. That idea was to create a community farm near their own property in Federal as a space where families could gather to learn about where their food comes from.

The Farm brings together a collective of like-minded business: The Bread Social, Flowers at The Farm and Three Blue Ducks, which all share and support the promotion of ethical, sustainable and organic practices.

Built on the philosophy to Grow.Feed.Educate., The Farm is a space where families can experience a real working farm. They can see where their food is grown in the Market Garden and orchard and in the pastures where cattle and pigs are raised in lush pastures and chickens forage all day.

GROWGrow is about growing food for the community and growing our knowledge about food provenance. 100% of the fresh produce grown in The Farm’s Market Garden goes into the Three Blue Ducks’ kitchen, the Produce Store and The Bread Social Bakery. Talk about zero food miles!

FEEDFeed is about nourishing the Market Garden with compost and gentle soil management and nourishing the farm animals with more pasture space than industry standards. It’s also about providing fresh produce to those in need in the local community via the charityLiberation Larder.

EDUCATEEducate is about offering opportunities for all ages to learn about the ‘farm to table’ philosophy and ethical and sustainable farming practices. Take a look at the workshop programmes on The Farm’s website and don’t forget the Daily Farm tours departing at 10am.

Cape ByronPerched atop of the Bay is the trusty Cape Byron light-house first built in 1901 to guard ships as they rounded Australia’s most easily point. Depending on where you begin, the loop walk from top to bottom should take you between 45mins to an hour and a half (to allow plenty of time for whale and dolphin watching). Lone Goat café sits atop the hill and situated half way along the track, the Pass Cafe serves coffee, kiosk food and ice cream. Resting points and water bubblers mean you can leave those plastic bottles behind! For a very authentic Byron experience, accommodation is available in the original lighthouse lodges.

Wategos BeachThe most easterly beach in Australia (and also one of the most beautiful). Pack a picnic lunch and make a day of it, enjoy a swim, a quick walk up the headland and then another swim!

Brunswick River A locals favourite, especially for the little ones. There are accesses to both sides of the river bank from Brunswick Heads and New Brighton.

Swimming Holes and Waterfalls This area is packed with beautiful swimming holes, wa-terfalls and dip pools. Some of the more popular ones in-clude Killen Falls, Minyon Falls and Upper Wilsons Creek. Theres also a grea book called Byron Bay Trails - it’ll give you all the information you need. Be mindful of these precious waterways - try not to use sunscreens and take your rubbish with you.

Mt WarningThe rainforest hinterland areas of Byron Bay are stunning. Take a slow drive or leave early and view the gorgeous Mount Warning with a pristine sunrise. A steady climb will take around 1.5hrs each way. Don’t forget to bring a sturdy pair of shoes, plenty of H2O and a snack. Always check the weather details before you travel.

The Crystal CastleThe perfect zen day out and great for kids. Walk the grounds of the castle, find a crystal of your choice and have your aura read. It’s a little touristy but you’ve got to love the mystic, hippy charm.

Learn to surfYou’ve been planning this (for years) so now is the per-fect chance! The Pass and Main Beach provide awesome fluffy white wash perfect for learners.

Whale watchingIs best from the top of the lighthouse in the crisp early morning from June through to September. There are also local boat tours that’ll take you a little closer.

Sea KayakingA tranquil way to view the bay from the sea and meet a few locals too! More often then not you will be greeted by an entourage of dolphins, sea turtles and when in season the majestic humpback whales.

Byron Bay has incredible allure, spend a weekend here and we have no doubt you’ll want to stay a month. The more times you visit, the more magic you’ll discover.

During your stay, please be mindful of your footprint on our fabulous unspoiled beaches and national parks. Always take your rubbish home with you, love and respect this beautiful part of the world as the locals do.

Take time to relax, restore and enjoy this paradise on earth x
