Creative Things Are Happening Here One of our students has written the following article about 6Cs highly engaging STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) lesson where they all had the opportunity to demonstrate their outstanding creative and critical thinking skills. 6Cs Mysterious Mission for NASA In 6C we had a robotics mission where mysterious boxes had landed on Earth. NASA had sent us to go and program our robots to scan the mysterious boxes, but we had to make sure not to touch the boxes because they may have been volatile! We had to use a computer to program our EV3 robots. This included the ultrasonic sensors in which we programmed them to detect the boxes and wait for five seconds (so that data could be streamed to NASA) before continuing. Our class did this in groups of 2 or 3. During this session most groups got roughly 50% of the mission finished, though some groups got more. I went by myself and got about 90% finished, and another group got the same. Our class really enjoyed this mission and its great that we get the opportunity to do this amazing subject. By Leroy 6C School Cross Country/Odd Sock Fun Run Success We had a fantastic day for our K-6 Odd Sock Fun Run on Tuesday. Congratulations to Mrs Stevens, Mr Hutchinson and Mrs Irvine for organising a very successful cross country and to the teachers who went out early to help with the set up. The weather was in our favour and some personal bests were achieved by the boys and girls. Congratulations to all of the students who participated in the fun run for their excellent participation, enthusiasm and support of the SRCs Odd Sock Fundraiser. Thank you to Mandy, Jodie and their team of helpers for the delicious food on the day. Thank you to Sue Charles and the P&C for the refreshing snow cones to cool us down. We now have 80 students who will be attending the Headlands District Cross Country at Teven Tintenbar on Friday 17 May. Cross Country Champions will receive their medals at Mondays assembly in week 3. The results from yesterdays cross country are featured on the next page. Odd Sock Fun Run sponsorship money can be handed in up until Friday 17 May, we have extended this by a week. We thank you in advance for supporting the SRCs major fundraiser for the year. Learning Potential Resources for Parents The Learning Potential Resources website offers a range of fun and engaging literacy and numeracy activities for parents to support their children in the work they are doing in the classroom. All of the resources are tablet-friendly, free to use and easy to access. They have been designed for parents and families of children from Kindergarten to Year 6. https://www.learningpotential.edu.au/

NAPLAN NAPLAN assessments will be completed by Year 3 and 5 students on Tuesday 14 May, Wednesday 15 Mat and Thursday 16 May. Friday 17 May is catch up testing day for any students that are absent on the day of the test. The tests cover different aspects of Literacy and Numeracy. It is essential that students arrive on time as the testing will take place in the morning. All students are encouraged to get plenty of rest, a good night’s sleep and to eat a healthy breakfast each morning to assist with their concentration. These tests provide important information to schools and help to support teaching and learning programs. Parents will receive an individualised report describing your child’s achievements later on in the year. If you do not wish your child to sit NAPLAN, please see the office for a withdrawal form.

Work Health and Safety This is a timely reminder that in the event of an emergency where parents need to be contacted, our first point of communication is via the school stream app which is a highly effective and very time efficient means of communication. There are a few parents that still do not have the school stream app on their phone. I urge all parents to download this FREE APP if you haven't already done so. We are happy to be of assistance if you're not sure how to do this.

Shoes This is a reminder that shoes/joggers with roller balls on the underside are not allowed to be worn on the school site. We appreciate your ongoing cooperation in this matter. A student wore them to school last week and ended up in sick bay with skinned knees.

Pets at School A BIG thank you to the large majority of families who are no longer bringing their dogs on site, your ongoing cooperation is very much appreciated. Please do not bring your dogs to school. This is a Department of Education Work, Health & Safety requirement that needs to be adhered to. Atilla, our Story Dog, came with a comprehensive risk assessment, special training and a qualified handler and he is the only dog that is allowed on site.

P&C Meeting Thank you to our amazing P&C who have recently purchased 14 reading comprehension boxes. These resources will ensure that all classes have access to this great resource. The Mother’s Day Stall was very successful and we would like to wish all of our mums a very happy Mother’s Day.

Stranger Danger It is important that children are informed about ‘stranger danger’. If children are walking to and from school or the bus stop, they should walk in a group and not respond to any strangers who approach them. If they feel unsafe they should walk quickly or run to their destination. It would be appreciated if all parents could discuss ‘stranger danger’ with your children, including strategies that they can use that may be specific to your neighbourhood.

Staff Update Mr Vockler is making good progress and looking forward to his return to work. He is a really dedicated teacher who loves his job and we are very fortunate to have him on our staff. The incident last Tuesday was totally unprovoked and not related to any school issues. The person responsible was apprehended shortly afterwards, charged by the Police and has been refused bail. The incident occurred well before students began arriving at school and the police, who had a significant presence on site, deemed it to be safe. At no stage were the students in any danger. A big thank you to our amazing parents who have provided additional support throughout the week, it has been very much appreciated. Mrs Stanford has taken leave with the upcoming birth of her baby getting closer and Miss Powell will be teaching KS. Until next time, Mrs Linda Trigg Principal

Year 4 Tyalgum Ridge Camp At the end of last term, Year 4 students were accompanied by Miss Paron, Mr Vockler, Ms Wright, Miss Stanton-Gillan and Nicky Sheridan on their excursion to Tyalgum Ridge. At Tyalgum Ridge, students enjoyed the beautiful scenery participated in lots of activities including; archery, high ropes/flying fox, camping skills, making a campfire, cooking damper, canoeing, rainforest hiking, feeding animals, rock hopping and initiative games. Students also had fun playing ball games on the big field and those brave enough even had a swim in the pool during free time. At night, students enjoyed some healthy competition in trivia, had fun showing off their talents and watching a movie. The students are to be commended for their excellent participation. A great time was had by all and lots of memories were made.

Band News Congratulations to students for settling into their new timetables so well. Our next band meeting is tomorrow afternoon at 3.30pm in the band room. It’s open for anyone to attend, so come along. Have a great week everyone.
