Dawn-Marie and I had recently returned from a fabulous family day weekend (Feb 10th – 12th) at our Clementine Outstation. Aside from the great comradery and friendship on the docks, we were privileged to have outstanding weather against the backdrop of snowcapped mountain views and Granite Falls thundering across the arm.. It was exceptionally cold at night with everyone’s furnaces going full blast. By the second night you could identify who’s who? just by the characteristic sounds heard. As we reluctantly headed home on the Monday, it was a contest as to who left first. Nobody wanted to leave. What a great club and outstanding outstation. From the Shore Captain

Just a couple of notes for your consideration this month.

Bar Pricing

Several members have asked us how we determine the price we sell our beer and wine at at our variousevents. I will have a spreadsheet prepared and available for the April Trident. Our goal is to determine how much we should charge to cover our costs, how much should the club charge tobe fair and if we should be charging a profit to cover other club expenses.I will look into what the excess funds have been used for in the past.

Recycling

We have been looking into the net effect of the recycling program currently operated at the club.We want to ensure none of our members harm themselves, reduce the mess left on the dock and eliminate thesmell.

As a test case, we will temporarily remove the current tall containers. We will be arranging for a company to provide us with 4 large cans on the dock. They will handle the removal and send us a cheque. We will test this new system out to determine its effectiveness and the actual return. If this works, we will move the new cans up to the new Recycling building planned for later this year.

Clubhouse

I would like to thank all of the members who have been using the Clubhouse for various purposes.Members have been diligent in cleaning after each use and not leaving unused items in the fridge.

Burns McLellan PCShore Captain

Dead ahead, through the pitch-black night, a captain sees a light on a collision course with his ship.

Reaching for the radio, he says: “Change your course ten degrees east.”

“Change yours ten degrees west,” comes the reply.

The captain responds, “I’m a navy captain! Change your course, sir!”

“I’m a seaman second class,” the next reply comes back. “Change your course, sir.”

The captain is furious. “I’m a battleship! I’m not changing course!”

The man replies, “I’m in a lighthouse. Your call.”

LOST KITTY

I was on a late morning stroll down “B” dock. Taking stock of all the vessels tucked away there andappreciating all the time and effort that our members lavish on their boats. A short pause ateach berth, eye balling the name of the boat and putting a name to its caretaker. As I doa slow pass I hear a very faint “meow”. I carry on a short way and then pause to think“could it be a cat trapped in a boat”? Perhaps it has kittens. It takes me time to locate thevery faint “meowing” sound. I traverse a number of shelters and finally locate where Ithink the “meowing” is coming from. It’s a 28 foot Bayliner.

The “meowing” sound stops for a while. I turn to go and it starts again “WHAT?” The sound is moreaudible now. I see that the back hatch is open on a Bayliner. The “meowing” is emanating from downaround the engines. I peer down into the dark engine space, surprised to see scrawny white legs with oldloafers attached to the foot parts.

They are not moving about much. I drop down into the cramped space and there pressed between thefuel tanks and the engine is an “older than dirt” member of our Club. He’s wedged in so tight that he isbarely able to wiggle his toes. “JIM what the hell you doing?” A feeble quaking voice said “I amchanging the oil filter”. I asked him if he’s ready to come out. He squeaked in the affirmative. I studiedthe extraction method and deduced that I would have to twist his arm around to free it and drag him outfeet first.

I crawl in beside him (a little embarrassing in the tight quarters) and attempt to rotate his arm out of theway. He shrieked in pain. Jim is very old and HE IS A LAWYER. I had an instant vision of having mybutt sued off.

There were three options:1)remove the engine.2)saw off his arm.3)call the fire department

The fire department arrives; Jim isn’t “meowing” when the nice fireman arrives. He rotatesJim’s arm out of the way. I made my way away down the dock when I heard Jim let out ablood curling howl. It was a howl that came from deep down in his chest and came outbetween clenched teeth I’m sure!

I saw Jim the next day favouring his sore arm and he was escorting an amazingly well paid(I’m sure) mechanic down to his boat to change the oil filter.

I think Jim Thomson was a good lawyer. He usually had a big smile and a friendly disposition. When I first met him in 1980 he was the Club’s Social Director. We didn’t have a clubhouse then, weused the Eagles Hall for social functions. Jim stepped down from Socials just before Christmas that yearand I was asked to assume the position. My first job was the Commodore’s Christmas Cocktail party atthe Eagles. It was an open & free bar (Gary & Wendy Kleaman; new members too) with Penny & I werethe bartenders). It seemed like there were hundreds of OLD FARTS in baggy pants and bejeweled ladiesin long dresses all drinking into the wee hours. What a way to start Socials. Jim probably looked at usand realized how smart he had been to get out of the firing line and the entire cleanup. Memories ofGood Old Days!P/C David Thompson, [email protected]

Notes from Maintenance

Electrical

Please note when the temperature goes below -3 degrees Celsius we turn the water off and try to get itrunning again as soon as it warms up.

To all mooring members, on March 17 each electrical service will be checked. This does require eachservice to be shut down, please be aware some items do not restart if the power is turned off.

Grid

As the grid will be used starting the end of March, please make sure that if you are coming on or off thegrid that you communicate with the member that is coming on/off before or after. This avoids conflict atthe gate. Also, you are expected to go on/off at the first available tide.

Communication will make everything work well with your fellow members – staff is not on site at 2300hrs.?!

New crane for tenders on the breakwater

We are close to installing a new crane on the Concrete breakwater (black hydraulic crane). We will give asmuch notice as possible, but this crane will be shut down for at least a week. Watch for an email for allthe tenders on the breakwater plus new training dates.

Recycling and garbage – To all members

Do not bring your garbage from home. The garbage service costs Burrard Yacht Club a substantial amount.

Oil, anti-freeze, filters, oil containers and batteries

This service is for member’s vessels, please put the products in the appropriate containers. If they are full notify staff, so they can be arranged to be emptied (remember both sides of the white container open. (Do not overfill). Plastic containers left open outside the large metal containers are an environment disaster with all the rain.

Batteries

If you want the recycling fee refunded to yourself, please put your name on the battery and we will collect your cash when the units are picked up. Please lock the container.

SUPERBOWL SUNDAY

41 33

That was fun. About forty mainly Eagles fans shared a ton of food to watch the New England Patriots lose tothe Philadelphia Eagles. The game began with some key 3rd down conversions and a Philly field goal. ThenNew England drove down the field and settled for a field goal. Tied at 3. Meanwhile Brian McClements wasbusy tending bar. A long run by former Patriot, LeGarrett Blount set up a 34 yard TD pass to Jeffery. A missedP.A.T. made it 9-3 to end the quarter. Alex Maier collected $100.

Pats marched down the field and missed a field goal on a botched snap. A game changer almost happened ona trick play to throw the ball to Brady who was all alone, but missed the high pass. Eagles took over and along pass to Jeffery and a 21 yard run from Blount made it 15-3. A stalled N.E. drive resulted in a field goal.15-6. Eagles made it back down the field, but Foles was intercepted near the goal line. A holding penalty keptthe Pats alive and Brady made a huge pass to Hogan. James White followed with a 25 yard TD run. Anothermissed extra point and it was 15-12. Next a great pass and run from Foles to Clement got them close. A 4thand goal at the one yard line produced another trick play with a direct snap to a back, a hand-off to an endand a TD throw back to the quarterback. 22-12. Brenda Phillips wins the half time $100.

Pats opened the 3rd with a march and a Gronk TD. 22-19 and the Eagle fans were uneasy. Not for long. Somegutsy calls and some perfect passing set up Clement for a controversial TD. Did he control? Announcers saidno. The review said yes. 29-19. Some well run routes and a Hogan 30 yard TD made it 29-26. SuzanneShepherd gets $100.

Eagles begin the 4th with a FG. 32-26. Brady marched with a Gronk TD. 33-32 and the first N.E. lead. Phillystalled mid-field and they took the gamble of the game. 4th and one. Failure will give the game to N.E. Theypassed and made a first down. The drive continued for an Ertz TD with 2-1/2 minutes left. A missed 2 ptconversion makes it 38-33 with enough time for a Brady come-back. Nope. Brady is stripped of the ball andPhilly recovers on the NE 30. A FG made it 41-33 with a minute left. Brady needed to go 91 yards and a 2 ptconversion to tie. He almost did it with a final second Hail Mary to the end zone. The jump ball hit the groundand game over. Nick Foles gets MVP and Dave Gage pocketed $200. Whew. Great Offensive game. Terribledefensive game.

Meet the Majewski Family

My wife Traci and her Family, the Neumans, first introducedme to boating when we met almost 20 years ago. Traci hasbeen boating since she was a child going on trips with herparents up the Pacific Coast. Traci grew up boating withher family and grew to love it so much that she dreamed ofowning her own boat when she got older. 30 years or solater that became a reality when we decided to purchaseour first boat as a family in 2015.

Our first boat (new to us) was called OPA and was a 22 ftSea Ray Select. The boat originally was for lake and someocean boating. As we broke in our boat on the lakes andocean we soon learned we had an affinity for ocean boating. We started going to places like Clementine and Ekins withher family before we were members of BYC and quicklylearned that a BYC membership was in our future.

We joined BYC in 2016 and have never looked back, loving all thegreat outposts, amenities and most importantly the learnings andkindness of the members that make up BYC. In 2017 we decidedthat our 22 ft boat was no longer adequate for our growing familyand decided to upgrade to our current boat called Sea Spirit whichis a 34 ft. Formula giving us a bit more room but keeping us in thatsporty look.

We have two children; Owen -9 and Camryn -7 as well as a yellowlab named Murphy and a cat named Bosco! Our kids can be seenon the Clementine and Ekins docks running (we always tell them towalk) around with their cousins Cole and Raena, who frequent thesame outposts, playing survival amongst swimming with the familydogs – Murphy, Kai and Charlie. If you see them and are bored,

ask them about their adventures, their stories can fill yourday.

Boating is just not boating without the wackiness offamily. We love boating with our family – Rick (The greatHalibut hunter), Faye (the real captain), Nicole (LeadEngineer/Mechanic), Sean (The great story teller), Cole(MacGyver) and Raena (Princess of the Ocean). We lookforward to many more years of boating with the familybut we now have an even bigger family in BYC and lookforward to meeting and learning from all the differentmembers. We hope to see you out there!

The Majewski Family,

Chris, Traci, Owen, Camryn, Murphy and Bosco

Local Motor Vessel History- Burrard Inlet & Indian Arm Part I

MV SCENIC BRINGS BACK CHILDHOOD MEMORIESBy Patricia Eaton, The Sunday NEWS, July 20th, 1986.

I recognized her immediately as I stood in the West Port lineup at Expo.

She has kept her figure, but she has definitely had a face lift. The MV Scenic is still beautiful, and I wonderedhow many visitors to Expo were flooded with childhood memories as I was.

Who can forget the joyous summer outings to Wigwam Inn or Belcarra Park? Family groups laden withpicnic baskets would disembark from the streetcars at Main and Hastings, and walk to the foot of GoreAvenue. There, at the Harbour Navigation Dock, they would board the Scenic for the leisurely trip along thefjord-like north arm of the inlet. Tickets were 30 cents for adults and 15 cents for children. Roy Barry, themate, would settle himself on the deck and entertain the passengers with his banjo. Captain McBurneywould tell about his pet bear who resided on Mount Seymour, and before long every kid would be staringfixedly at the mountain.

Harbour Ferries’ MV Scenic has been plying local waters since 1916. Built in 1907 in Anacortes, Washington, for the United States Navy, she was christened Falcon and served as a tender at the Bremerton Navy Yard.

Around 1916, she was purchased by Captains Brewster and McLean of the Port Moody Ferry Co., and wasused on passenger service between Vancouver, Port Moody and Ioco until 1922. As new roads slowlyprogressed eastward from Vancouver, she was taken off the run and used as a passenger and picnic boatbetween Vancouver, Belcarra, and Wigwam Inn at Indian Arm.

In 1930, the Scenic was purchased by Captain J.D. Stalker who owned Harbour Navigation (nowHarbour Ferries Ltd.). In 1932, she was completely rebuilt from the waterline up, and redesigned to

operate in shallow waters, enabling her to tie up at small floats. She is shallow drafted and her propeller is higher than her keel. Her gasoline engine was replaced by a Superior Diesel.

From 1932 until 1968, she was said to be the only Floating Post Office in the British Empire. Her official title was the Burrard Inlet T.P.O. (Traveling Post Office). She became known to stamp collectors around the world, who would send letters to be stamped by Captain Stalker, the postmaster.

The Scenic had her own special run, six days a week in the summer, and two days a week in the winter. After leaving Vancouver, she would stop at Belcarra, Woodlands, Sunshine, Brighton Beach,

Thwaytes Landing, Lake Buntzen, Jubilee, Weldwood and Wigwam Inn. She delivered and picked-up hermail, sold stamps, postal notes, registered mail, and picked-up passengers who wished to go to town.

In the late ‘30s and during the ‘40s, residents who lived along the inlet, but weren’t on her regular stops, could summon “Captain Andy” (Captain J.C. Anderson) by putting a four gallon gasoline can painted whiteon top of a flagpole-like structure. Scenic would then pull into the resident’s dock and pick-up any mail, passengers, or messages to be carried to Vancouver.

Residents could mail their grocery orders to Woodward’s and in a day or so, the Scenic would return theirsupplies. She also delivered fresh milk. Residents would pre-order their milk through Harbour Navigationwhich kept records and milk tickets, and ordered the milk from Dairyland.

In November 1949, the Scenic was pressed into emergency role when flood waters knocked out the bridge overthe Capilano River between North and West Vancouver, Scenic transported many stranded people back andforth.

Inevitable, progress brought a road through to Belcarra. In 1968, her famous mail run came to an end. From late 1969 to early 1971, the Scenic was used in the cross-harbour ferry service, a venture thatslowly died from lack of passengers. In 1979, she was contracted out to the Provincial Park Branch on asummer run providing service between Nanaimo and Newcastle Island. In 1982, she carried schoolchildren between Protection Island and Nanaimo.

With thanks to PC Frank Mogridge. Watch for part II in the April Trident.

How did you get that eye patch?

A sailor and a pirate are in a bar recountingtheir adventures at sea. Seeing thepirate’s peg-leg, hook, and eye patch thesailor asks: “So, how did you end up withthe peg-leg?”

The pirate replies: “We were caught in ahuge storm and a giant wave swept meoverboard. Just as me crew were pullin’ meout a school of sharks appeared and one of’em bit me leg off.”

“Blimey!” said the sailor. “And how’d youget the hook?”

“Arrrr…”, mused the old salt, “I got into afight over a woman in a bar, and me handgot chopped off.”

“Blimey!” remarked the sailor. “And howabout the eye patch?”

“Oh that,” said the pirate, lookingembarrassed. A seagull droppin’ fell intome eye.”

“You lost your eye to a seagull dropping?”the questioner asked incredulously.

“Well…” said the old sea dog,” it was mefirst day with the hook.”

Remember, It’s a Small World

This past summer we were cruising in Desolation Sound and took a side trip to Quadra Island and RebeccaSpit. We sailed into Drew Harbour with another couple who are also members of BYC. It was a beautifulsunny day and the big harbour was not very busy. We rounded the point and were idling into the baylooking at prospective anchorages. Our cruising friends were slightly astern and off to starboard when weheard an English accented voice yelling at them that they did not know anything about marine laws andproper courtesy regarding right of way and boat handling. Our friends are very capable boaters and theskipper knows his stuff! The yelling, all be it one sided carried on as the English sailing yacht motored pastour friends and us at about 5-6 knots. The tranquility of the anchorage was shattered and heads beganpopping up from all the other boats that were peacefully anchored. The tirade continued on until thesailboat cut across our bows and we were challenged as to our intentions. I was shocked to see this displayof arrogance and ignorance on the water. Our boats were barely making headway and we had this couplescreaming at us as if we had rammed them. (not a bad thought) The sailing yacht headed into the lee ofthe island at set hook, we never did talk to them or see them, even when we took the dinghy past to askthem why they were so angry.

In today's connected world we decided to look up the boats name and find out what club or affiliation theybelonged to. I found their home port in England and discovered they belonged to the Royal Naval SailingAssociation. And best of all, they had email contacts for the executive! I sent an email to the secretary ofthe association and was shocked to get a response less than 24 hours later! He called the owners of theyacht, who were on a world sailing trip "A couple of Miscreants", and continued on describing them as ashame to England and an embarrassment to the RNSA. The skipper of the boat had been in the submarineservice in the Royal Navy and had been referred to by his fellow shipmates as a "pit rat" , a sailor who likesto stay in his bunk.

The lesson learned? No matter how far away from home you sail, you always represent your Yacht Club orSailing Association. You are an ambassador for your club!

From the Editor-

Well, as promised, a shorter Trident this month. Things are quieter this time of the year. Thank you to JackOerlemans, Chris Majewski, Bob Thompson, PC Frank Mogridge and of course our Club Historian PC DavidThompson for your articles.

By the time you read this, Penny and I will be far away in Buenos Aires boarding our ship sailing aroundSouth America and back up to Santiago. It is summer down there right now. The temperature in BA is 27and at the moment it is snowing outside my window. However I suspect that when we get down to Tierradel Fuego it may be a tad cool. Will have to bring a good variety of clothes.

We will be back on March 16th, just in time to start putting the April Trident together.
