Foreword

In Matthew 19, we read a wonderful story that reveals the love Jesus has for boys and girls.Following an ancient custom among Jews, a group of parents brought their children to Jesus that Hemight bless them by laying His hands upon them. To the Jewish people, laying on of hands was nosmall matter. They rightly believed that holy men had the power to invoke God's blessings on children inthis manner.

Matthew 19:13 says, 'Then were there brought unto Him little children, that He should put His handson them, and pray... "

Jesus' disciples were zealous for the work of God, but they had no understanding of the importanceof children. Forgetting that Jesus had raised a young girl from death, cast demons out of two others, and taught at length on the importance of children, the disciples rebuked the parents.

These parents were not asking for something unusual or unreasonable. The disciples simply feltthat Jesus was too busy to care about children. Unfortunately, this attitude prevails among many ofGod's people today.

While most leaders would never admit it, children's ministry is often the last consideration in thechurch. The evidence of this unfortunate fact is revealed in the amount of money that is spent to reachand teach children. I suppose that most business-minded Christians would think, 'What can the childrenpossibly contribute?"

Children do not have much money.

Children do not provide valuable support ministry.

Children do not have much influence.

In every case, these statements are wrong.

Children, as they grow, will have great earning power. They can be trained now for wonderfulsupportive ministry roles by being active in children's church. And perhaps most importantly, childrenhave influence-where it counts most.

Jesus laid His hands on the children and blessed them saying, "Suffer little children, and forbid themnot, to come unto me; For of such is the kingdom of Heaven" (Matthew 19:14).

Children have a great deal of influence with Jesus. He said in Matthew 18:5, "And whoso shallreceive one such little child in my name receiveth me."

If you'll stop for a moment to consider what Jesus is really saying, you'll begin to understand justhow important it is to properly receive children. For in receiving children, we receive Jesus into ourmidst.

Would you think of receiving Jesus without preparation? Would you think of having the Son of Godin your class without showing Him honor? Of course not.

Therefore, we ought to receive children with honor and respect. Jesus has promised to pay back tous that which the children cannot give themselves. With these thoughts in mind, we must prepare to dothe best job possible in presenting God's Word to children. We should honor them as we would the LordJesus, because, after all, it is the same as if we received Him.

May the blessings of God flow through you as you share these important truths to boys and girls.

Sincerely,

Willie George

"The Book Of Books Bible Puppet Skits" and "The Zion 7" segments were created to enhance your lesson, butnot to replace you, the teacher. These segments have a strong message for each week's topic but they are notstand-alone programs. That's where you come in. Your job is to cause every part of the service to flow togethersmoothly.

Kids On The Move Curriculum has many parts which can be assigned to assistant teachers and helpers, but itis the Lead Teacher's job to serve as the Master of Ceremonies of the class and to maintain a smooth transitionfrom each part of the service to the next. Practice makes perfect. The more time you put into praying andstudying for each lesson, the better it will be. The same is true for the amount of time you spend planning how tolead the class into and out of each segment. Here are some steps to follow to help you develop and maintain asmooth transition from live to video segments:

1. Always preview the segments for each week. Be familiar with what is being taught. When applicable, look up the storyline in the Bible and familiarize yourself with what it says. Also, be familiar with how eachsegment ends. All of the "Book Of Books" skits have more than one part. Between the parts, askquestions relating to what the kids have just seen and expound on what has been taught. While you aredoing this, have someone cue the video to the beginning of the next part. Always anticipate the endingand be back in front of the class ready to go the second the video stops. Avoid dead time.

2. Always be excited about each segment and introduce it with enthusiasm. Also, you may want to introducethe topic the segment is about and then lead into the video.

3. Make sure each video segment is cued correctly to the right place. Always have someone other thanyourself standing by ready to insert, start and stop the video to help keep building excitement.

4. Ask the children questions about what you have shown and refer to the characters and their choices asyou teach and reaffirm the central truth and the day's memory verse.

lMJ~lMJGJ~L? ~flflJ~ [9lW0®lM\lMJgThe most important goal in any teaching program should be that of imparting God's Word to the student.

Jesus said, "Man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God."

The Word of God is filled with life-giving energy. Every verse, even those that are difficult to understand, isfilled with power.

Your Kids On The Move Curriculum package contains thirteen "Spoken Word" masters. These are providedprimarily for you to use in creating transparencies for overhead projector systems in the classroom. However, thesame master can be used at the copy machine to reproduce a take-home paper of each day's memory verse.

An important element can easily be added to your quarterly children's church program to help you maximizeyour effectiveness. As you give out "The Spoken Word" paper each week, remind the children of a contest thatyou'll hold at the end of the quarter. Award some kind of prize to those children who memorize the thirteenverses. You may choose to award lesser prizes to those who recite only ten or twelve. The success of theprogram will depend upon how much you promote it and how motivated the children are to receive the reward.

Is it scriptural to give rewards to those who excel? Consider these verses:

"And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain acorruptible crown; but we an incorruptible." I Corinthians 9:25

"And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shallreceive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ." Colossians 3:23-24

"Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness..." II Timothy 4:8

"To him that overcometh...willl give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God,

...and I will give thee a crown of life,

...shall not be hurt of the second death,

...willl give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new namewritten, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it,

...willi give him power over the nations,

... and I will give him the morning star,

... the same shall be clothed in white raiment...

...willl make a pillar in the Temple of my God...and I will write upon hiru the name of my God, and thename of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem,

...willl grant to sit with me in my throne." Revelation 2:7, 10, 11,17,26,28 and 3:5,12,21

TfI' GR.,'"' FAMXLYUY WILLIE GEORGE

In 1976, I began to bring a small puppet character who lived in a cardboard box into children's church. He was abig hit with the kids and soon became their favorite puppet. In 1979, as I prepared to do a series of big campmeetingservices with audiences of 1,000 or more children, I took the small character to a puppet maker and had him blown-upin size and gave him a pair of legs. Now that he could be more easily seen, he was a bigger hit than ever before.

In 1980, I gave him a family, and in 1983, I began to use him as a featured character in The Gospel Bill Show. Hehas been to Africa, Asia, South America, Europe, and allover North America. He's my familiar friend, Oogene Greene.

In order to use a puppet character effectively, he needs to have the following characteristics established andobserved on a consistent basis:

1. Personality

2. Voice

3. Appearance

If a puppet looks goofy, but talks with a serious voice, he's a bit unbelievable. If he has no consistency in hispersonality, he'll be unbelievable. Believability is the key to successful puppetry.

I've written a brief character sketch for each of the Greene family members. Hopefully, these few thoughts will help~ you to get to know the personality of your puppets.

OOGENE GREENEOogene is a typical, ornery American boy about the age of ten or eleven.

He has a goofy-sounding voice which is deep, but not raspy. It has the samecharacter as the "00" sound pronounced when a person imitates a hoot owl.

Oogene is not quick to believe God's Word, or to obey his parents. He isnot openly defiant of authority, but he often tries to find a way around doing whatis right. Consequently, he is always learning important lessons the hard way.

If he told a lie, it would only be if he felt it necessary to get out of trouble. When confronted by his parents, though, he quickly admits his wrong-doings.He can be discouraged easily and very often reacts with negative words whenhe faces difficulty. He is, however, teachable.

He does not get along well with his sister, but he doesn't hate her, either. He does not have evil motives or badintentions. He gets into trouble mainly because he likes to take shortcuts.

And at the end of the skits, he is always able to learn from his mistakes. He always comes around to the truth, although it could have been much easier.

Oogene is not an ideal role model because we wanted a character whose behavior could be rebuked. Remember:the Bible gives us the stories of those who did not always measure up to perfection as well as the stories of faithheroes. When you point out Oogene's mistakes after performing a skit, many of the children will see themselves andmake corrections accordingly.

Page 18: by Willie George and the staff of Church On The Move · Lesson 1: Walking By Faith II Corinthians 5:7 Lesson 2: The Rope Of Faith Hebrews 10:35 (NIV) Lesson 3: AThief Called Doubt

JEANIE MAE GREENEJeanie Mae is slightly older than her brother, Oogene, and is a much more

consistent believer. She is not perfect, however. Her chief flaw is that she has atendency to tattle.

Jeanie is an excellent student, in contrast to Oogene, and is always quick toremember God's Word in a difficult situation. Ocassionally we see failure in Jeanieprimarily to illustrate what should be done if a truly good person stumbles.

Jeanie loves the Lord, but is not a "holier-than-thou" character. She really wantsto help her brother, but he doesn't always welcome it.

Her voice is ahigh, almost whiny-sounding falsetto. It must be slightly differentthan Mama Greene's voice, for it too, is falsetto.

Jeanie Mae expects a lot from her brother, but she's just as tough on herself. She is not a hypocrite. Most of the time, she is impervious to her brother's sarcasm. She enjoys a little more respect from her mother than does Oogene.

MAMA GREENEMama Greene is a committed Christian housewife who is dedicated to providing

the best for her son and daughter. She does not argue with her husband, but supportshim, especially in front of the children. She is a godly woman, but tends to showemotion when things are difficult. She can be discouraged by negative news but turnsquickly when her husband exhorts her.

Mama is very supportive of Jeanie because her daughter does not create anytrouble around the house. Though she loves him very much, she is a bit suspicious ofOogene because of his mischievous nature.

Her voice is a low-falsetto, similar but distinct from Jeanie Mae's.

PAPA GREENEPapa Greene is the gentle, but firm, head of the Greene family clan. He is a

committed believer and loving father. Though Mama seems to favor Jeanie Maeover Oogene, Papa is equally fond of both and overtooks Oogene's behavioralthough he does give him correction.

Papa Greene works for an aircraft manufacturer in a white-collar setting. He's agenerous dad, but isn't easily'fooled. He doesn't hesitate to share spiritual truthswith his children, but he isn't preachy. He genuinely wants them to understand thatit's always best to serve the Lord.

His voice is a nasal-twang, not obnoxious, but distinct and different from theothers in his family. He never shows juvenile behavior and yet he is not stodgy or

dull. His Christianity is very real and he is quick to turn to God for help. He doesn't always know the answers to the toughquestions that he faces, but he knows how to find them with God's Word and prayer.

He's a very consistent, authoritative, but kind figure. He loves his wife, his children, sports, and his job. He's active in '----church and well-respected in the community.
