WHAT IS STRESS?

Stress is a physical, chemical, or emotional factor that causes bodily or mental tension and may be a factor in disease causation

Stress Warning Signs and Symptoms

Cognitive Symptoms Emotional Symptoms Memory problems

Inability to concentrate

Poor judgment

Seeing only the negative

STUDENT LOANS Loans are the leading cause of financial stress in

college students Of the 20 million students attending college each year,

60% borrow to help cover costs “There is roughly somewhere between $902 billion and

$1 trillion in total outstanding student loan debt in the United States today” (http://www.asa.org/policy/resources/stats/)

“As of October 2012, the average amount of student loan debt for the Class of 2011 was $26,600, a 5 percent increase from approximately $25,350 in 2010” (http://www.asa.org/policy/resources/stats/)

Many students worry about paying back loans before even having graduated, this causes them to be constantly stressed about how they will pay it back once they do graduate

CREDIT DEBT Students are acquiring credit card debt

at an alarming rate Companies are giving students credit

cards, even if they should not be eligible for cards

DEBIT CARD USE Using a debit card can cause you to

think you have an endless supply of money

People don’t generally check their account balance after every time they swipe their card

Online spending Can cause you to accidentally overdraw

your account

Managing time can be a lot of work for a college student who has many of responsibilities.

Students who have part time jobs, lots of school work, and families to attend to it can become

very hectic Also Athletic responsibilities and

expectations to live up to can cause lots of stress on a persons life period.

Lots of Daily commitments and demands to meet can cause:

High amounts of Stress and with that stress

Academics can take a fall Lack of sleep can occur in which alters

moods. Sometimes people can fall into a

depressed state of mind And can and will commit suicide to get

out of that life

WAYS TO PREVENT THESE STRESSORS Manage time by: 1. Planning ahead record times and

dates in things you use daily (cellphones, post on refrigerator)

2. Prioritize to reach goals and deadlines 3. Start early on bulk loads like projects,

papers when they are assigned don’t wait until the last minute.

4. Talk to someone 5. Make time to Exercise 6. Get rest when needed.

A time management survey was given out to college students.

It stated that Setting goals and priorities reduced behavioral reactions to stressors, and increased their cognitive reaction (strategies for handling those situations), Mechanics of Time Management, i.e., planning and scheduling, was correlated with cognitive and emotional reactions to stressors. Organization of tasks reduced behavioral reactions and increased cognitive reactions. The cognitive reactions to stressors showed a positive association with time management strategies indicating it improves students' problem solving ability

HOW DOES ACADEMICS, TIME MANAGEMENT ANXIETY

INTERRELATE

Academics, time management and anxiety interrelate because if students don’t manage their time well they can fall victim to anxiety

problems.

BIOFEEDBACK SYSTEM Study done at California State University

Taught students how to use portable biofeedback stress

Results were increased awareness and control of stress

Students understood their body better and ability to use deep breathing in stressful situations
