History

Indians first settled in Nevada (The Shoshone and Paiute were in the great basin, while the Washoe lived around Lake Tahoe, and the Mohave farmed along the Colorado River). Spain claimed a large area including Nevada. This area was past to Mexico in 1821. Several explorers including Peter Skene Ogden, Jedediah Smith, John C. Fremont, and Fremont’s guide Kit Carson explored Nevada from the 1820’s through the 1840’s. . The United states won these lands from Mexico in 1848. The California Gold Rush began in 1849 and silver and gold was found in Nevada near Virginia City in 1859. This source of wealth was called the Comstock Lode Nevada became the thirty-sixth U.S. state in 1864. In 1931 Nevada made gambling legal. Gambling is still a big business for the state.

going on. So Nevada was called “Battle Born.”
