History of Women• 1,400 years ago• Women and men were equal• Both had the right to vote • Women could work• Women could inherit land•Choose their husbands

THE DAY EVERYTHING CHANGED •Before…

•Women could be any profession•Doctors, teachers even government workers

•After…•Women couldn’t go outside with out a male relative with them at all times• Took all of their rights away

Living Every Day Like the Last•Shukria Barakzai who lived in Afghanistan got suicide bombing notes in the mail by the Taliban•She was a target•Didn’t know if she was going to die the next day•Shurkia has 3 daughters and a husband•Everyone is worried about her•She was targeted for 6 months• Still doesn’t know what will happen

There Are NO WordsAisha, an 18 year old girl living in Afghanistan• Left her in-laws for being “abusive”• Had a consequence for leaving• Taliban found her • Took her to a grassy prairie• Husband cut off her ears and nose• Left her to die A year later…• Living at a secret shelter just for women• Telling her story for awareness of the Afghanistan rules

After the EdictWomen’s Rules in Afghanistan

After the edict was in place women…• Beaten if ankles show• Couldn’t speak in public• Had to be accompanied by an adult, when walking outside• some orphanages never take the girls outside, they haven’t seen daylight in a very long time.• Don’t have health care• 57% of girls marry before 16

• Taliban is no longer in control of Afghanistan• Women rights are getting much better• Women’s rights are now in the Constitution • In Parliament there are 361 members and 91 of them are womenAfghanistan has come a long way since the edict was started in 1996Still has a lot to go

Women in UAE

• UAE constitution states that women are equal to men• Women can get well paid jobs• Allowed to get property• The dress code isn’t as harsh• There is a college for women in UAE• Lots of women get there graduates degree

The rules in the UAE aren’t as strict as Afghanistan

Women in the UAE cont.• Since 2005, 85% of women can’t read and write in UAE• Military colleges for women• 7.6 lower participation at school• Husbands go to work for 4 months, while wives stay at home and take care of the children• Women who work are viewed as more reliable•Women are very safe at work.

Religion• Islam is a very important part of any women’s life in the middle east.• Its apart of what they do every day• The Taliban’s ultimate goal: everyone converting to the Islam religion if not they will kill you• The reason: they want to please god• Taliban members will get rewarded when they die.• They think women have no rights
