The mixture of these two structures in different concentrations creates many shades of hair color. The absence of these pigments produce white or gray hair. White and gray hair is the main cause of the desire to get hair coloring. Many older people try to hide there grey with these treatments.

In the PastHair dye was one of the oldest beauty preparations and was

used by ancient cultures all over the world.

Early hair dyes were made from metallic compounds, plants, henna, indigo, and tree bark just to name a few.

In Roman times they used Rock alum, quicklime, and wood ash to bleach hair. Henna was also used in many parts of the world to produce a reddish dye.

In Europe and Asia they mixed Indigo, which is known as fabric dye, with Henna to make light brown and black shades of dye.

The Italian recipe was to comb black sulfur, rock alum, and honey through the hair, and let the hair dry in sunlight.

Another method of coloring hair was to apply white powder, and other colored powders, which were made by adding burnt sienna or umber.

These preparations were used until the 19th century, when hydrogen peroxide was discovered. When applied, Hydrogen peroxide brought out the color.

The PresentNow hair coloring can be found in many forms, including:

rinses, gels, mousses, and sprays. There are 3 main types of hair dyes:

Temporary

Covers the surface of the hair but it doesn’t penetrate into the hair shaft, and it only lasts for 1 to 2 washings.

Semi- Permanent

Penetrates into the hair shaft and usually last for 5 to 10 washings.

Permanent

Causes lasting chemical changes in the hair shaft, and last until the hair is replaced by new growth.

amounts that impart special qualities to the hair or give an important action to the dye.

The two main chemicals in hair dye are:

• Hydrogen Peroxide- helps initiate the color-forming process and creates longer lasting color.

•Ammonia -is an alkaline that lightens the color when it comes together with the peroxide.
