IntroductionHow important is place value in our daily lives? Think about how many times you see numbers. The price of a toy, your score on a video game, or even the score of your favorite sports team. As you gain more digits, the value of each of them becomes greater and greater. They all have their place and their place determines how your read it. And how much it’s worth.

Comparing these numbers in the real world has many benefits. By using greater than, less than, and equal to (>, < , =), we can determine the value of these numbers and the digits they contain.

ProcessYour job is to evaluate different video game scores by looking at the high scores that other people have gotten. You must look at their scores and decide whether or not the game was too easy by comparing the high scores for each game. The higher the score, the easier the game. Once the video game company has this information, they can put it in stores for you to purchase. Then you can start your own company!

5. The next step is to compare two numbers using “greater than”, “less than”, or “equal to”. After comparing them, we can put them in order. Watch the video here.

6. The video game company is ready for you. Use the high scores from the video game company and put them in order from least to greatest. The ones with the higher scores are the easier ones. The lower scores are the most challenging. Use the Video Game Company Scores worksheet and the Record Sheet to do this.

Now pretend that you are the owner of a video game company. Create ten titles for video games and use the random number generator to create high scores. Put them in order from the highest score to the lowest score.

One the right hand side of the web site, set the minimum number to 1 and the maximum number to 9,999,999.

Randomly select 10 numbers and write them in on a blank place value chart.

Put them in order from easiest (highest score) to hardest (lowest score).

When you find out what the most challenging game is, make a cover for the real video game to advertise it.

Introduction

Welcome to my WebQuest. My name is Ryan Shiffer and I teach fourth grade in Middletown, CT. In alignment with the CCSS, our first unit of study in Math deals with place value up to the millions place.

This WebQuest deals with the basic foundations of place value such as determining the place of a digit, the value of a digit, and comparing and ordering numbers.

At the end of this WebQuest, students will create their own video game company and video games to sell. Using place value, students will be able to rank their games based on the high scores recorded. They will then take their most challenging game and create a cover for it.

This WebQuest is designed for fourth graders and reviews some of the fundamental properties of place value as a review. Third grade CCSS that students should have already been exposed to include.

CC.3.NBT.1 Use place value understanding to round whole numbers to the nearest 10 or 100.

CC.3.NBT.2 Fluently add and subtract within 1000 using strategies and algorithms based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.

CC.3.NBT.3 Multiply one-digit whole numbers by multiples of 10 in the range 10–90 (e.g., 9 × 80, 5 × 60) using strategies based on place value and properties of operations.

This Webquest is design to have students review the basics of place value that they have learned in previous years and extend their knowledge to include places up to the millions.

Students will use videos and worksheets (some teacher created) from the internet. Under the resources tab to the right you will find a link to any thing you need to print out for the students.

Their final project is to determine the most challenging game from their own company and create a cover for it. A rubric is provided in this Webquest and you can also print one out on the resources tab.
