There's no scale to balance this out Some say may those who curse days, curse this dayThere's no scale to balance this out How does a man wrap his mind around eternity When he cant even explain his own composition? Don't you see it's bigger than you? He sleeps in the mountains of Indonesia, And the white on his flag brings colors to shame

David ClapperDavid Clapper (1962-2008) was a Christian Missionary and pilot.

He and his family have done mission work in 70 native

Indonesian villages over the past few years. As a pilot, he flew supplies in and out of poor

villages all over Indonesia. On August 9th 2008 while flying

supplies near Papua Indonesia his plane crashed into the top of a mountain due to a windstorm. He was pinned under his plane

for hours before dying. The Clapper family continues their missionary work in Indonesia

today. (Beiler) Back

This is the time to turn down our heads and turn up our hearts

In this line the band is trying to send the message that people should look at this tragedy, learn from it, and stop thinking about themselves and helping others. This also reflects the mood of the song which is somber.

He Sleeps In the Mountains of Indonesia

This is a Hyperbole because David Clapper is not actually sleeping in the mountain’s of Indonesia its just an over exaggeration because David died in the mountains of Indonesia. (dictionary.com)

The white on his flag brings colors to shame

The meaning of this phrase is talking about how David died helping people from a different country while there are nations fighting each other over small worthless things that are not worth dying over. This is a Comparison

The earth will swallow thewater

This line in the song is an example of personification because it is not actually possible for the earth to swallow water, so they are giving something none living the characteristic of something living. (dictionary.com)

“Black Box”

Back

When they say black box in this song they are referring to the Flight Data Recorders and the Cockpit Voice Recorders in air planes. These devices are known as black boxes even though they are painted bright orange so that they can be identified in plane wrecks. These devices record flight data and everything said in the cockpit so that in the event of a wreck the cause of the accident can be identified. (How Stuff Works)(Space Age Control Inc.)

The Earth will swallow(Old mountains will crumble)The water and spit out, (And stronger ones will rise)The clouds will refill the oceans

This is a metaphor for the cycle of life. It is talking about how everything lives, dies, and is reborn. (dictionary.com)

This plane is going down in flames The plane that this line is

referring is the plane flown by drummer Matt Greiners

friend, David Clapper. David Clapper was a missionary

working in Papua Indonesia, when his plane was caught

in a wind storm and was flung into the side of a

mountain. The plane pinned him to a mountain until he

died before help could arrive. (The Herald Mail)

To better this world

David Clapper was a missionary in Indonesia and was doing mission work when he crashed his plane. The reason he was flying his plane that day was to bring fresh produce to a secluded village in Papua Indonesia. He died helping people and making the world a better place. (Beiler)

Don’t you see it’s bigger than you?

The message that the band is trying to get across in this line is that people are only thinking about themselves, yet David sacrificed his life for others.
