Order of Thanksgiving Prayer of the Republic of Armenia

Thanksgiving Prayer Service for the Republic of Armeniais offered either on Sept. 21, the anniversary of the indepen-dence of the present Republic of Armenia or on the closestSunday to that date.

This same Thanksgiving Prayer Service, which is alwaysheld either at the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy or as a sep-arate service, is also offered:

1- on May 22nd, the anniversary of the heroic battles of Sar-darapat, Bash Aparan and Karakilise that were fought in 1918.

2- on occasions when the president of Armenia is visitingan Armenian church.

3- on the day when a new president is elected.

Before commencing the Thanksgiving Service, the pre-siding clergyman tells the congregation about the service, andthe reason for offering it on that particular day. Then the pre-siding clergyman, if he is some one other than the celebrant ofthe Divine Liturgy, and other clergymen that are present arevested with copes. Standing in a straight line and according torank either on the bema or in the chancel, they face the congre-gation flanked by deacons and altar servers. As the first hymn,"Today the Celestials Rejoiced," is chanted, the deacon presentsthe censor to the presiding clergyman, who censes to the mainaltar, side altars and to the faithful.

The Thanksgiving Service for the Republic of Armeniawas compiled during the 1920s. Most of the litanies andprayers (all of them in Classical Armenian), are new, but thehymns are taken from the hymnal of the Armenian Church.The service was composed by the late Archbishop TorkomKooshagian, the Armenian Patriarch of Jerusalem (1931-1939),who was at that time the Primate of the Diocese of the Armen-ian Church of Egypt.

O Lord our God, listen to the voice of supplications of yourservants and keep unshaken the Republic of Armenia, which yourestored through the grace of your mercy. Increase the grace ofwisdom to those who are at the helm of the state, namely the na-tionally elected president, A…. B..ian, all the ministers and the en-tire order of the government, so that they may correctly lead yourpeople to righteousness. Also grant to our generals and soldiersa greater spirit of valor. Plant in all of us love of holiness and goodjudgment in order to know wisdom and instruction and to fulfillour obligations towards the observance of all the laws that are in-tended for the benefit our nation.
