Handball

• Handball was developed in Denmark, Sweden and Germany. Originally played outdoors, the sport first appeared at the Olympic Games in 1936. The modern indoor version made its Olympic debut at Munich 1972.

• Basketball was invented in 1891 by Dr James Naismith, a Canadian physical education teacher.

• One of the most popular sports that will feature at the London 2012 Olympic Games is also the biggest: Athletics features 2,000 athletes running, walking, jumping and throwing for gold.
