The Americans and Southwestern Indians were not the greatest of friends.

In 1875, after a long time of battling against Mexicans the Americans forced the Tonto Apache to leave the Rio Verde Indian Reserve and the several thousand acres of land that were given to them by the United States Government. The Americans made them walk 180 miles in the winter, flooded rivers. Several hundred of the tribe members had died and only a few hundred made the journey.
