In February 2005 the founders registered the domain name www.youtube.com

On April 23, 2005 the First Video was uploaded

This video was entitled “Me at the Zoo”. It shows Karim at the San Diego Zoo talking about the elephants.

It is a 19second video

In December of 2005 the site was officially launched

Technology in YouTube

About 75% of YouTube view content requires Adobe Flash Player plug-in

In January 2010, a experimental version was launched. This version did not require the installation of Adobe or any other plug in. It ran from a built-in multimedia capabilities of web browsers supporting the HTML5 standard.

How YouTube makes Money

YouTube makes money by having advertisements put up around the site. Recently video ads have been added to the site, after so many videos watched an ad would play on the screen.

Another way the site creates revenue is by creating video ads for clients that would play on the website. Depending on how long or what types of graphs desired.

The range goes from $4,995 to $85,000

YouTube has introduced a system called Video ID, which checks uploaded videos against a database of copyrighted content with the aim of reducing violations

Every time you upload a video with audio and or video you do not own the rights to you must state this is your description or you will be violating their policy and the video will be removed.

Social Influence

YouTube is 88% home videos. This creates a global connection that transcends space and time.

This has made new forms of expression/identity/community. Inventing new ways to connect with people all over the world.

Your bedroom, which was once the most private place is now the most populated place.

YouTube to Celebrity

Soulja Boy- His home video was uploaded April 2007 and buy August 2007 he was signed by a label. In seven weeks he was at the top of the billboard charts and was nominated for a grammy.

Justin Bieber- A vlogging boy from Ontario, Canada. The famous singer Usher found his video and signed him under his label. He is now on the top of charts with many hit singles and albums.

April Fools

The community who work at YouTube have a sense of humor. Every April fools they play a trick on the site.

2008: All links on the main page redirected to Rick Astleys’s music video “Never Gonna Give You Up”

2009: When clicking on a video on the main page, the whole page turned upside down

2010: Temporarily release “TEXTp” mode, which translated the colors in the video to upper case letters.
