Tourist Attractions in Bohol• Chocolate Hills (Carmen) - Most famous attraction of Bohol, over a

hundred hills that turn brown during summer thus giving its name.• Baclayon Church - Built by the Jesuits in 1727, old and grand with a

museum with an interesting collection of religious relics and artifacts.• Blood Compact Site - Signifies the agreement between Chief Sikatuna of

Bohol and Spanish Leader Legaspi.• Hinagdanan Cave - Has an underground bathing pool.• Tarsier Trail - Home of the tarsier, smallest primate. Tarsiers in captivity

are used to humans.• Loboc River - Have lunch on a large bamboo raft while on a scenic river

cruise down Loboc River.• Punta Cruz Watchtower - Gives a splendid view of the Cebu Strait.

Tourist Attractions in Cebu• The Lapu-lapu Monument - Chief Lapu-Lapu was a Muslim chieftain on

Mactan, a couple of miles from Cebu. He is famous for being the first Filipino to resist Spanish colonization and many Filipinos think of him as a national hero. On April 27, 1521, Lapu-Lapu and his men stopped Portuguese explorer and sea captain Ferdinand Magellan and almost 50 Spanish troops as Magellan tried to come ashore on Mactan. Magellan died in the battle. A bronze statue of Lapu-Lapu is on Mactan. Cebu's international airport is also there.

• Magellan's Marker - Also on Mactan, Magellan's Marker marks the spot where the famous explorer died in knee deep water as he tried to come ashore.

• Magellan's Cross - The cross marks the spot where Filipino Christians were first Baptized on April 14, 1521. It is in a small kiosk on the grounds of the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño on Magallanes Street.

• The Basilica del Santo Niño - Cebu's holiest site and, some say, the soul of the city. The "Santo Niño" is inside the Basilica. The Santo Nino De Jesus is a statue - and now relic. It was a token of friendship between Magellan to a local noble woman, Queen Juana. The Basilica is the country's oldest church. It was built in 1565 and destroyed by fire in 1568, rebuilt in 1602, and again restored in 1740.

Tourist Attractions in Cebu

• Fort San Pedro - This, the oldest colonial fort in the Philippines, is also among the most well preserved. The fort was built in 1565, though much of the present structure dates to a renovation done in 1738. The fort is now a museum and includes a number of documents, sculpture, and art work along with historical artifacts from the fort.

• University of San Carlos - This Jesuit college is the oldest school in the Philippines, established in 1565. It was formerly called Colegio de San Ildefonso established by the Jesuits. Four galleries, big on anthropology.

• Capitol Building - Built in 1937. Beautiful piece of architecture. Described by one writer as "majestic and imposing," it is a replica of the U.S. White House.

• Casa Gorordo Museum - On Lopez Jaena Street. Restored home of the first Filipino Bishop of Cebu. Gives a glimpse of local life from about 1860 to 1920 and serves as something of a museum.

• Southwestern University Museum - Holds the collection of Lydia Aznar Alfonso, focused on pre-colonial Cebu. The collection includes Ming pottery from China and artifacts from across Southeast Asia.

Cebu Delicacies• Kinilaw is often translated as "salad," but that is a poor translation because

it doesn't really resemble what most Westerners think of when they use the word. Kinilaw is a combination of vegetables (tomatoes are the bulk) and raw fish flavored with a mixture of chilies, vinegar, and coconut milk.

• Escabeche usually gets translated as "sweet and sour fish." • Kanding caldereta is usually translated as "goat stew." It is a gourmet dish

in Cebuano culture. • Tinola is among the most well known soups in the Philippines - spring

onions, tomatoes, green chili, garlic, ginger, and a local herb similar to basil leaves. You can get fish tinola or chicken tinola.

• Sinigang is also a soup. It can have either fish or chicken in it. It is flavored with tamarind.

• Ginisan is usually served as a vegetable dish. It commonly includes bean sprouts, bamboo shoots, beans and cabbage cooked in soy sauce, vinegar, onions, and garlic.

• Inun Unan is a fish dish cooked in garlic and vinegar. Usually it is cooked in something like a crock pot. Most Western tourists are surprised at how much they like the dish...

• Pinakbet is a stir fried vegetable dish that includes pumpkin.

People and Culture of CebuMost Cebuanos are descendants from Austronesian people, while some have Spanish and Chinese ancestry. Spanish and Chinese communities play an important economic and political role in Cebu. Cebuano culture is laid back and has preserved Hispanic traditions in its culture. The Philippines were under American rule for the early part of the 20th century, thus, American culture is pervasive in certain areas of life, with English being retained as the medium of instruction of most subjects in private schools and, to a lesser extent, in public ones. American culture also influenced contemporary music, the fastfood industry, etc.

Cebuano is the indigenous language of Cebu. There are more than 20 million speakers of Cebuano. Cebuanos are conversant in Tagalog, as well as other Visayan languages such Hiligaynon and Waray-Waray.

Cebu is predominantly Roman Catholic. Other religious minorities include Protestant churches of Assemblies of God, Word for the World, Iglesia ni Cristo, Jesus Miracle Crusade, Jehovah's Witnesses, God's Kingdom, the Baptists, a Reformed Baptist, The Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints (Mormons), Taoists, Muslims, etc.

People and Culture of Bohol

The main language spoken in Bohol is Boholano which is a dialect of Cebuano. Tagalog, Chinese, and English are also spoken by many of the residents. The minority Eskayan language is also taught in community schools in Biabas (Guindulman), Taytay (Duero) and Lundag (Pilar) but has no mother-tongue speakers.

The majority of the population is Roman Catholic. Adherents of other Christian denominations like the Protestants and Iglesia ni Cristo account for a significant part of the remainder.
