Before we get started with the phases of the moon, lets cover a few facts. • The moon has no light of its own. The light we see is the moon reflecting the light from the sun.•The moon orbits around the earth every 29.53 days.• The same side of the moon is always facing earth. We never see the back side of the moon.• One half of the moon is always lit, but when the moon circles the earth the amount of the lit side we see changes.

•In a new moon the is no visible part of the moon.•Half of the moon is still lit, but we are not able to see the lit side from earth. •The half of the moon that is lit is facing the sun, and the other half that is not lit is facing the earth.

Waxing Crescent Moon

•The visible moon is partly less than ½ illuminated by direct sunlight; remember that the moon has no light of its own.•The term waxing means increasing. The visible part of the moon is increasing.• You can see the position of the moon, the earth, and sun in the bottom illustration.•Notice that the moon light is moving from the right to the left when waxing.
