The 13 Colonies: Slave Trade and Religion
By Kirby, Luke, and Tom
Slave Trade
Slave Trade
Slaves from West Africa were traded for guns, cloth, and rum.
Lots of people got rich in the slave trade.
The ocean crossing was call the Middle Passage.
Most died on the trips from disease, starvation, and dehydration.
Slave Trade: Slavery in General
Slavery was more popular in the South.
Most slaves worked in the fields. They had other services such as
nurses, carpenters, blacksmiths.
Religion in the 1700’s
Religion: Puritan Church Services
Instruments were used to call people to church. Captains of the watch made sure everybody was at
worship. Captains sometimes searched homes to make sure
everybody was at worship. Worship was held in town meeting house and lasted up to
five hours. Wealthier people got better seats. Halfway through they would take a break.
Religion: The First Great Awakening
Was a religious movement in the 1730’s. At this time, people lost faith. To bring people back, preachers held outdoor services. These services changed people’s hearts and souls, even
Ben Franklin’s.
