HOW THE URINARY SYSTEM WORKS

Your body takes nutrients from food and uses it as fuel to maintain your body.

After your body has taken the nutrients from the food, waste products are left behind in the blood.

The urinary system removes a type of waste called urea from your blood.

Urea, water, and other waste substances, form the urine as it passes through the nephrons(tiny filter tubes)and down a tube called the ureter to the bladder to be flushed out.

THE ORGANS OF THE URINARY SYSTEM (:

KIDNEYThe kidneys are the organs that clean the blood and rid it

of waste. We have two kidneys, but people can live with one.

URETERThe ureters are the tubes that the urine passes through

to go to the bladder. BLADDER

The bladder is a pouch-like muscle that holds in urine. SPHINCTER MUSCLES

The sphincter muscles are the muscles the prevent urine from leaking from the bladder.

URETHRAThe urethra is a tube that connects the bladder to the

genitals so that the urine can come out.

DISEASES OF THE URINARY SYSTEM One disease of the urinary system are

kidney stones. Kidney stones are hard masses of waste. One type of kidney stone problem occurs when there is too much waste in your urine. Kidney stones often appear in pre-mature infants. There are different types of kidney stones. Some types run in families. Most of these kidney stone problems can be treated.

TREATMENT OF KIDNEY STONES There are many types of treatments

for every type of kidney stones. Kidney stone that are really small can be washed down with urine. Kidney stones that are fairly big can be broken down with medicine and be flushed out of your body. If the stones are too big, that they cant be washed down, surgery may be needed, but it is very rare.
