Obesity and It’s Causes
Having a BMI (Body Mass Index) of 30 or higher
Causes:› Inactivity› Poor Diet› Hereditary› Calorie Consumption > Calories Burned
A Growing Nation
33.8% of all U.S. adults are obese› 17% of children are also obese
In Michigan alone, 30.9% of the population is obese
Approximately 300,000 adults die from obesity-related causes per year

What is a barrier?
A barrier is a mental, physical, or measurable “brick wall” keeping you from becoming physically active
Top Ten Barriers
1. Lack of time2. Inconvenient to exercise3. Low self-motivation4. Find exercise boring5. Find exercise unenjoyable6. Low self-efficiency7. Fear of injury8. Lack of goal setting9. Lack of support10. Lack of resources
Lack of Time
“I don’t have the time in my schedule to work out”
1. Incorporate 30 minutes atleast 4 times a week
2. Mesh exercise into your activities1. Ex: Do calf raises while sitting at your
desk
Low Self-Motivation
“I don’t really feel like working out. I’ll just do it tomorrow or something.”
1. Something as simple as walking a mile is a good exercise
2. Join group to workout with like cycling club
Find Exercise Boring/Unenjoyable
‘I’m not going to run today. It’s just so boring!”
1. To decrease the chances of quitting exercise, switch up the routine
2. Play a sport to put some spice into it.
Fear of Injury
“I shouldn’t exercise today. This knee of mine is about to just collapse again.”
1. Reduce the intensity of your workout2. Find exercises that limit the use of hurt
body parts
Lack of Goal-Setting
“What would I even get out of it? It takes SO long for anything!”
1. Becoming physically fit may take time, but stick with it.
2. Create more long term goals with short goals in-between.
Lack of Support
“My roommate seems to be so persistent on side tracking me from working out. I wish he would just support me.”
1. Try and find friends/family that is more support and willing to possibly participate
Lack of Resources
“I would work out but those darn gyms are so expensive!”
1. Find a gym or work out facility with flexible prices
2. There is most likely a walking/running train provided by the city

Living a healthy lifestyle isn’t just being physically active; but emotionally as well
