TONIGHT’S ARTWORK

The artwork on the screen tonight and in the worship folder is by Giotto (1237-1337). He was a master painter

who perfected the painting of the human form. In contrast to the style of the time in which faces and human

bodies were painted as one dimensional and stylized, Giotto painted the body more like a sculpture with more

natural, realistic representation and faces that conveyed emotion. His paintings are rich in color and detail.

PRAYER

P Almighty God, we ask you to look with mercy on your family, for whom our Lord Jesus Christ was willing

to be betrayed and to be given over to the hands of sinners and to suffer death on the cross; who now lives

and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever.

C Amen

RESPONSIVE READING Isaiah 53

P He grew up before him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground.

C He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should

desire him.

P He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering.

C Like one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

P Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows,

C yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted.

P But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us

peace was upon him,

C and by his wounds we are healed.

P We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way;

C and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

P He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth;

C he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so he did

not open his mouth.

P By oppression and judgment he was taken away. And who can speak of his descendants?

C For he was cut off from the land of the living; for the transgression of my people he was stricken.

P He was assigned a grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death,

C though he had done no violence, nor was any deceit in his mouth.

P Therefore I will give him a portion among the great, and he will divide the spoils with the strong,

C because he poured out his life unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors.

P For he bore the sin of many,

C and made intercession for the transgressors.

THE PASSION OF CHRIST ACCORDING TO THE GOSPEL OF JOHN

O sacred head, now wounded, with grief and shame weighed down,

Now scornfully surrounded, with thorns your only crown,

O sacred head, no glory now from your face does shine;

Yet, though despised and gory, I joy to call you mine.

For this your dying sorrow, your pity without end?

Oh, make me yours forever, and keep me strong and true;

Lord, let me never, never outlive my love for you.

Lord, be my consolation, my shield when I must die;

Remind me of your passion when my last hour draws nigh.

My heart will then enfold you – Who dies in faith dies well

PRAYER

Let us pray.

Almighty God, you willed that your Son should bear for us the pains of the cross and so remove from us the

power of the adversary. Help us to remember and give thanks for our Lord's passion so that we may receive

forgiveness of sin and redemption from everlasting death; through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

Amen.

LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses

as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation. But deliver us from evil. For

thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

HYMN

Abide with me! fast falls the eventide;

The darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide!

When other helpers fail and comforts flee,

Help of the helpless, oh, abide with me.

I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless:

Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness:

Where is death’s sting? where, grave, thy victory?

I triumph still, if Thou abide with me.

Hold thou thy cross before my closing eyes.

Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies.

Heav'n's morning breaks and earth's vain shadows flee.

In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me.
