1Neanderthals lived in Europe and a small part of modern Asia. They moved about with the moving of ice age glaciers.

Habitat

2 Physical CharacteristicsCharacteristics

Neanderthals could have only been 5ft 4 in. tall. They had large rib cage that allowed for no waist. Some people believe this would help the Neanderthals retain body heat in the cold weather. They were very muscular because they were ambush hunters. A ambush hunter throws weapons such as spears. Neanderthals might have had slightly higher pitched speech. They had large ankle joints and femurs. 3Burial PracticesHunting tools

Customs

People believe that Neanderthals had special traditions and rituals that they performed to honor their dead. Most bodies have been found with flexed legs. This was an intentional burial position. Some people have suggested that they may have tied the dead then buried them. Since Neanderthals buried their dead it may mean they had a religion. Neanderthals used bolas for hunting. This would wrap around the animals legs and trip them.

4A Neanderthals diet consisted of meat. This meat was probably mammoth. Some scientists have suggested that the Neanderthals died out because they did not eat a lot of plants.

5DNA FactsGenetic similaritys and differences between Homo neanderthalensis Homo sapiensDifferences in Genetics

Neanderthals contained the foxp2 gene that allows speech. Modern humans also carry this gene. A double stranded DNA molecule is made up of 4 chemical bases. These four bases are adenine, thymine, cytosine, and guanine. 3.2 million base pairs have been found in the Neanderthal genome. 6Homo neanderthalensisHomo sapiensMostly lived In EuropeMigrated all over the world230,000 years ago they appeared90,000 years ago they appearedBuried their deadBuried their deadHomo Sapiens VS. 7Theory number oneWhy did the Homo neanderthalensis die out?

Neanderthals survived great when they werent competing. When Homo Sapiens came in and started eating the bigger animals. They could not survive.

8Theory number twoWhy did Homo neanderthalensis out?

They had many problems with adapting. They could not survive with little food. They died way easier than Homo sapiens. This is the ultimate reason why Homo neanderthalensis died out. 9I believe that Homo neanderthalenisis died out because they only ate meat. They couldnt adjust to the vegetarian life style. They did not adapt well to food changes. This is may be another reason why the species Homo neandertalensis died out.
