By : Gabby VInco THE NFLS NEED FOR CONCUSSION TECHNOLOGY Over the past two decades, the NFL has been negligent when it comes to treating their football players and their head injuries. In 2011 several former players in the NFL filed a lawsuit Although a settlement was agreed on between the NFL and the players in the lawsuit (765 million), the NFL never admitted fault. SOME BACKGROUND INFORMATION There were 261 diagnosed concussions in the 2012 NFL football season In a study, 76 out of 79 players brains that were studied showed signs of CTE Also out of 128 former football of all different levels 101 showed signs of CTE CONCUSSION FACTS (NFL Concussions) PREVIOUS ATTEMPTS AT TECHNOLOGY IN SPORTS Pros It gives the doctors and trainers the ability to track and monitor the impact that players take It could significantly help the diagnosis and understanding of concussions Cons Most of the technology is still new and may be flawed People have doubts about changing the game with new technology OPPOSITION They should apply these sensors to every team, but if that creates a problem they can choose a select amount of teams to try it on Later on they can add in the other types of machines and tests (since they are still fairly new and require testing) ACTION (Glatter, Klie) IMPLEMENTATION This graphic is an example of the implementat -ion of this type of sensor technology. This is actually data recorded by the University of North Carolina and gives a visualization of the angles and magnitudes of impact a 21-year-old defensive end took. Impact with a force < 80 g Impact with a force > 80 g Impact resulting in concussion (NFL Concussions) Incorporating these types of technology in the game can help revolutionize not only sports but also the medical field. Athletes will be able to train for longer and harder if they dont have to worry about dealing with head injuries. IN CONCLUSION VS.
