The Jeep was first mass-produced in 1940 for the United States armed forces. During WWI limited attempts where made to mechanize the military forces.

The army had already used 4x4 trucks, by the time WWII was coming around the war department was still looking for a standardized light cross-country reconnaissance vehicle.

haul soldiers around from place to place and haul supplies during WWII.

The original jeep was called a “peep” during WWII.

It could carry six passengers and top out at about 65 mph.

The Jeep combined the ruggedness of a truck with the speed and mobility of a light car.
