Ashok Goud is small farmer in the state ofTelangana in southern India who has beenfarming two acres of land for the past 20years. When his paddy crop failed last yeardue to drought, he planted maize. When themarket for maize fell, he learned how to growtomatoes with help from the local seed store'sowner. When his land was unusable sixmonths in a year due to heat waves exceeding115 degrees Fahrenheit (46 Celsius), he ran asmall store on the side to support his family.Ashok is an entrepreneur, and his dedicationto an often unforgiving profession isunwavering.

More than a billion people in the world areemployed in agriculture, and in India, one outof four people are farmers or agriculturalworkers. Like Ashok, these smallholderfarmers -- who constitute 85 percent of farmersglobally -- make up one of the largestconstituencies among the world's poor. Theyfarm on a hectare or two of land, and often lackaccess to the right seeds and fertilizers,technology, and knowledge, which in turnmakes their yields far lower than they couldbe. Markets fail them when they try to sell theirproduce. On top of these challenges, they areincreasingly affected by climate change.

Despite all of this, smallholder farmers like Ashok manage to persevere. This perseverance isimportant for the livelihood of individual farmers and the millions who collectively rely on smallholderfarmers for food security. Read more.

In the 10 years since I wrote "The Omnivore'sDilemma," many things about the American foodsystem have changed for the better, but perhapsthe most important development -- and potentiallythe most challenging to the long-term survival ofthat system -- is the fact that the question at theheart of my book has moved to the heart of ourculture.

I hasten to add this is not my doing. When I wrotethe book, Eric Schlosser's "Fast Food Nation"and Marion Nestle's "Food Politics" had alreadyhelped pique the curiosity of Americans aboutthe system that fed them. Yet, in general, allwriters can really do is lift a sensitive finger to thecultural breeze and sense a coming change inthe weather; very seldom do they actuallychange it themselves. (Or as one of my mentorsonce explained, "Journalists are at best short-term visionaries. Any more than that, no onewould read them.") Read more.

Focus on natural capital costs inindustrial farmingBy Dan Mitchell, independent journalist, Green Biz

It is nearly impossible to calculate the real costsand benefits -- including the externalized orinvisible costs -- of any human activity: growingsoybeans; making car tires; cooking dinner foryour family. When growing soy, for example, it'seasy enough to calculate the total price paid forinputs such as fertilizer or pesticides and theprice received for the finished crop.

But accounting for the total costs and benefits --such as environmental damage from fertilizerrunoff or the social benefits of putting land toproductive use -- isn't something we tend to doas a culture.

For example, the true costs of producing aQuarter Pounder with cheese are borne not onlyby McDonald's, but also by all of us who have todeal with, among other things, environmentaldegradation caused by industrial farming and thebad public health outcomes of eating suchmeals. Read more.

The U.S. Department of Labor ("DOL") has issued the new overtime-final regulations ("Final Rule")which impact nonprofits as well as for-profits. The new rules will go into effect Dec. 1, and willmean that most employees earning less than $47,476 will be entitled to overtime compensationregardless of their employment classification.

Neither the Federal Labor Standards Act ("FLSA") nor the DOL's regulations provide an exemptionfrom overtime requirements for nonprofits. However, there are special rules that apply to nonprofits,which is where the confusion and details of compliance begin.

Here are some key points and how they apply to nonprofits:

1. Effective date: Dec. 1, 2016 with no phase in period allowed.2. Salary threshold: The Final Rule raises the standard minimum level for salaried, exempt

workers to $47,476 per full-time year from the previous threshold of $23,660. White-collaremployees must also meet the exemption requirements of the duties tests defined by the

FLSA.3. Enterprise rules: As a general matter, nonprofit organizations are NOT covered enterprises

unless they meet the threshold test. The FLSA and the Final Rule apply to enterprises withannual sales or business of at least $500,000. For a nonprofit, enterprise coverage appliesonly to the activities performed for a business purpose (such as operating a gift shop). Itdoes not apply to the organization's charitable activities that are not in substantialcompetition with other businesses. Income from contributions, membership fees, manydues, and donations (cash or non-cash) used for charitable activities are not counted towardthe $500,000 threshold.
