Dear Parents,

This is your child’s Take Home Sight Word Book. The words in this book come from the Dolch Word List. & the Fry Instant Word List. Fry’s Instant Word List & the Dolch Word List rank the most common words in the English Language in order of frequency. This book contains the 100 most commonly used words. The goal of this book is to increase your child’s fluency in reading. After practicing these words, your child should be able to look at each word and read it within 3 seconds to check the word off of the list as “known words”.

Please spend 10-15 minutes each day studying this workbook with your child. Please focus on one page at a time, so you do not overwhelm your little ones each night. Do not go onto the next page of words until your child has mastered the words on the page. To help, highlight the words that your child is struggling with, and return to these words for practice at least 3 times a night. Your child has set marks to meet at each 9 weeks. 1st 9 Weeks is 75-100 words. 2nd 9 weeks is 100+ words. 3rd 9 weeks is 150-200 words. At the end of the year, 1st Graders should know 200+ words. I will be assessing your child’s progression at school. If your child misses words at home, please make sure to review them with your child while continuing on with the other words. After your child has mastered EVERY WORD on each list, they will color the picture on the bottom of the page. Here are some tips for studying these words:

1. As you study the list, vary the order of the words. 2. Get CREATIVE! Your child can use shaving cream, play dough, noodles, wet spaghetti, or any other

item you can think of to create these words. 3. If your child has difficulty reading the word, the adult can write and read a sentence with the word in

it, saying “blank” in place of the Sight Word you chose to use in your sentence. Your child should be able to identify the word through context clues and by seeing the beginning and ending letters of the word.

4. Use the words as “Passwords” to get through the doors in your home. Have your child read the password to pass through the door.

5. Please go back and review the previously mastered sight word list to build confidence, and continue to work on fluency.

Your child’s progress with these words will be monitored regularly , so please make sure you are studying these words nightly. Keep this list at home with you in a place you won’t forget them. Or you can even leave it in your child’s Important Notes pocket to remind you of the nightly homework. If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know. I appreciate your help and support!

Thank you!!!! Caryn Adkinson
