Deer Grunt Calls
By Bill Grove of Bills Custom Calls
After choosing the wood that I am going to use I cut 1 blank 3 ½ inches long and the other one 3 inches
long. I find the center and mark it with a punch.
I then take the longer blank and drill a 7/8 hole 1 ¼ deep with a forstner bit.
The center is now marked for the next step.
I change to a 5/8 forstner bit and since it will only reach 2 inches I drill ¾ of an inch deep then change to
a 5/8 drill bit and drill 1 1/8 deep, and now I change to a ½ inch bit and drill the rest of the way
I drill the shorter blank with a ½ hole all the way through
I turn the longer blank to my desired shape sand and finish and set off to the side
Now lets turn for the reed
I make the blank round and measure in 1 inch from each end and mark with a pencil all the way around
I turn each end to make a 7/8 tennon 1 inch long .I use an open end wrench to keep checking for size
I use a caliper to check the size of what is in the center to match it with the barrel taper the ends of each
tennon and put the O-ring grooves in
I use the plastic tube for a guide on where to put the O-ring for the tube
I put in the O-ring grooves sand and finish,Set the reed and put the tube in place
Here are a couple pics of the finished call
A very comfortable mouth piece
