Kids these days just don’t know how to light their underwear…wait what?

Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, a Nigerian citizen, tried to blow up a bomb hidden in his underwear Christmas day, 2009.

The flight was Northwest flight 253.

Umar was a member of the Yemen branch of Al Qaeda, who were the ones who supplied him with the bomb.

If he had succeeded, he would have killed roughly 289 people.

However, the explosive didn’t go off, and caused a fireball instead.

Even terrorists have a budget

The plane was on its way to Detroit, which may not be a huge American symbol, but he chose it because it was the cheapest ticket.

This proved the US counter-terrorist theory that the Yemini branch is more interested in killing lots of Americans and destroying the American economy.

Honesty is such a lonely word

He was charged with eight terrorism charges, and he pleaded guilty to each and every one of them.

He was sentenced on February 16, 2012 by a federal judge to life in prison.

What happens next?

Well, the natural reaction was to increase airport security to full-body scanners to try to detect explosives.
