By: Ardi Malek Boushehri Drew Simon Function of Cardiovascular System The cardiovascular systems main function is to maintain blood flow to all parts of the body, to allow it to survive. The body takes essential nutrients like oxygen from the blood, and at the same time, the body dumps waste products, like carbon dioxide, back into the blood so it can removed. The Cardiovascular System also plays a role in the immune response and the regulation of body temperature. Associated Organs Heart Blood Blood Vessels Arteries Capillaries Veins Heart The function of the Heart is to pump blood around the body Consists of two sides: the right and left side Four Chambers Left atrium- Receives blood from lungs Right Atrium- Receives blood from the rest of the body Right Ventricle- Pumps bloods to the lungs Left Ventricle- Pumps blood to the rest of the body Blood Vessels Blood Vessels- Tubes which carry blood Veins Delivers used blood from the body back to the heart Pulmonary Veins- Take blood from the lungs to the left atrium Inferior and Superior Vena Cava- Where all other veins drain into; these veins take blood from the rest of the body to the right atrium Arteries Coratid- Takes blood to the neck and head Coronary- Provide blood supply to the heart itself Hepatic- Takes blood to the liver and branches to the stomach Mesenteric- Takes blood to the intestines Renal- Takes blood to the kidneys Femoral- Takes blood to the legs Aorta- Largest artery; Left ventricle pumps blood into aorta then carries it through rest of body through smaller arteries Pulmonary Trunk- Right ventricle pumps blood into it; split into pulmonary arteries and take blood to the lungs Capillaries- Tiny blood vessels that connect the Veins and arteries together Blood The blood carries the nutrients and oxygen the body needs to survive It also carries the waste that needs to be removed from the body Cavities The cavities the Cardiovascular System lies under is the thoracic cavity and the pericardial cavity. Relation to Another System The Cardiovascular System provides the Lymphatic System with oxygen, blood, and nutrients required for everyday functions. The Cardiovascular system also works with the Respiratory System to reach the same goal: to get oxygen to tissues and get carbon dioxide out of the body.
