Numerous authors have associated metal music with socialproblems such as suicide, self-destruction and Satanism Examine the mental health of fans of heavy metal music Determine if there is a link between mental health and theenjoyment of this type of music in France. Surveyed 333 fans of metal music. Their mental health was evaluated by the Hospital Anxiety andDepression Scale (HADS), a widely used instrument that measuresanxiety and depression. The scores of the sample of metal music fans were then comparedto the scores that reveal possible, probable, or severe mentaldisorders. Metal music & mental health in france
Variables included age, gender, status, education, motivation andparticipation in metal music culture. The results indicated that fans of metal music are mainly young adults(median age = 22.67) and tend to be male (87.85 %). As a whole, metal music fans have levels of anxiety and depression thatare similar to and lower than levels in the general population Specically 5 % Subjects that scored higher levels of anxiety and depression were thosethat had literary and/or arts backgrounds This study suggests that opponents of metal music should re-examine thebasis for their criticism. More scholarly research is needed to betterunderstand the effects of metal music on fans and on society. results 282 males (87.85 %) and 39 females (12.15 %).
The mean age was years old 49.53 % were students and % were employed 8.73 % were both employed and students. The average number of concerts each year was (maximum = 100 concerts) 35.20 % had permanent body modications (e.x., tatoos,piercings, scarications) 5.30 % had a combination of two types of body modications results Varying preferences for different types of metal music:
death metal (37.69 %), black metal (22.74 %) and thrash metal(18.07 %).
