FEMINISM AND THE MEDIA

What is Feminism?•The advocacy of women’s rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality to men.

Feminism and Feminist in the Media• The media negatively portrays feminism• The media positive portrays feminism• The media negatively and positively covers feminist protests and conferences• The media negatively and positively reports on celebrities who identify themselves as feminists

How the media failed Women in 2013!• “From blockbusters starring heroines like Jennifer Lawrence to Katie Couric being hired as Yahoo's global anchor, there are many female accomplishments to celebrate as the year ends. But one viral video, "'How the Media Failed Women in 2013," says things are not changing fast enough.” • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NswJ4kO9uHc

Photoshop in the Media•Women are photoshopped into something they are not. • Photoshop causes people to criticize women’s photos since you are changing your body and looks but if you don’t use Photoshop you will be criticized for your imperfections.

Misrepresentation Documentary• . “Teenage Girls spend 31 hours a week watching TV, 17 hours a week listening to music, 3 hours a week watching movies, 4 hours a week reading magazines, 10 hours a week online that’s 10 hours and 45 minutes of media consumption a day.

Positive Portrayals of Feminism• Changes in stereotypes• Changes in Gender roles• Feminism has promoted change

CEOs of Companies

Positive Image

70% of women get jobs in journalism over men

The top paid news anchor is a woman

Positive in Movies• More leading roles have been given to women• Stronger characters (not damsel in distress)• For Example Hunger Games – shows strong female character• Brave – not a normal princess movie

Talked about more in Media• Media and magazines are changing the ways they portray women• More magazines and adds have been rebranding their image and putting “real women” on the cover instead of photoshopped

Negative Portrayals of Protests in the News• The media often use words like radicalists, ruthless, and even crazy to portray feminist rallies and protests. • They also say that these rallies are man bashing which in many cases is not true.• The media often ignores the facts and doesn’t report on why people are protesting but rather that they are being disruptive and holding up traffic and disrupting people’s daily lives.

Examples of negative portrayals• Deutsche Welle reported negatively on a feminist group Feme protesting at the Vatican• Photos made them look crazy

and they even poked fun at the protestors by using the phrase “to ehm…..protest”

• Not reporting all is is just as bad as reporting negatively• On October 27th thousands of

feminists took to the streets of Spain in order to bring awareness to the fact that women were often left out of changes made to the economic state in Spain.

Positive Portrayals of Protests in the News• They explain why feminists are protesting and the issue at hand • They get really good quotes from leaders of the protests. • They also speak about how the protests help and move change along and what good they did. • The Herald Sun • Explained why they are protesting the issue and even called

out the guy being protested as a “creepy pick up artist who is known to promote sexual assult”

Compare/Contrast• Washington Post

• Talks about how Turkish President said women will never be equal to men• Gave all the facts, no bias• Took quotes from feminists• How Turkey is lowest ranking

in gender gap out of Europe/Central Region

• WDSU News

• “feminist slam turkey president”• didn’t add half the quotes

the president said• Referred to as “feminist

firestorm”• Only added quotes from

feminists at the end• Talked about how Turkish

president would continue to fight for human rights however feminist say he was spouting rhetoric

Celebrities and Feminisim• Many celebrities have identified themselves as feminists• Both men and women have stood up to support feminism

Emma Watson• This past summer she was named a U.N. Women Goodwill Ambassador. • In September she gave a speech on feminism and gender at the U.N. headquarters in New York as the launch of a campaign called “HeForShe”.

Taylor Swift• Many wondered about her stance on feminism recently in a Huffington post article Swift said that she has been a feminist her whole life, but didn’t realize it because of her confusion over the definition of the word. • She said that her “awakening” was in part to Lena Dunham, who is very outspoken on her feminist views.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt • Told the world on the Ellen DeGeneres Show that he was raised a feminist by his mother
