How they are used

Similes are used often to present opinions.

If someone wanted to say that their stomach hurt they would say “My stomach rumbled like an earthquake.”

Their stomach did not do that but that is the point of a simile. To express an emotion or a feeling using a bigger, more powerful, and less similar word.

When they are used

Characters enjoy showing emotion. So often similes appear in dialogue between two characters.

Sometimes when a book wants to describe a person in a powerful way they will use a simile like “Billy’s voice roars like a dinosaur.”

This statement tells the reader that Billy is very loud.

How they are formed

A simile usually starts with a pronoun or noun such as a name or a thing.

After that it shows a characteristic of that person or what they are doing so this can be a noun or verb.

Depending on if the previous step is a noun or a verb you might have to place a verb now if the first two words are nouns.
