The centre, which will have a football academy attached, is set to revolutionise sports development in eThekwini Municipality setting it on par with other great sporting cities. The land where the sports academy will be built, can now be leased for development to begin, following the completion of the public participation process. This process was done in line with a Council resolution taken in 2015. A report approved by Full Council on 4 May 2016, confirmed that the Municipality has achieved all compliance requirements necessary for the development of the sports academy. The report tabled before Council stated that both the Provincial and National Treasury have no objections to the sports academy provided that all necessary processes have been complied with. The project is being developed in partnership between the Provincial Government, eThekwini Municipality, Hoy Park Management Pty Ltd and the South African Football Association. The centre seeks to promote the development of quality players from an early age. The proposed site for the development is the Sports Precinct at Kings Park, adjacent to both the Moses Mabhida Stadium and Growthpoint Kings Park. The centre will accommodate all sporting codes for both men and women from youth development to elite. It will also become an International High Performance Centre for other sporting codes which will attract local, national and international teams and sportsmen to KwaZulu-Natal. Mayor James Nxumalo said the facility will help improve the quality of football in the country. “This state-of-the-art high performance facility will unleash a new generation of sports stars,” he said. Councillor Bridget Ntshangase said the project could now move to the implementation stage now that the public has been consulted. “We should all promote sports development as it will enrich the lives of the youth through sport. We have so much talent that needs to be nurtured to ensure that we are on the same level as other Municipalities,” she said. With regard to objections received from the existing occupants on site and their supporters, the report explained that the Municipality was acting in the best interest of sports development within the City. It also reaffirmed Council’s resolution, notwithstanding the objections lodged, granting the right by Hoy Park Management Pty Ltd to use the capital assets (land) for the development of a sports academy. An artist impression of one of Durban’s proposed Driver Development Parks. The facility will be used by driving schools for training purposes.

Plans are afoot to build appropriate facilities to be used by driving schools to train learner drivers, conduct specialised training and refresher courses.Mayor James nxumalo said

the City has identified a site on Wills Road, on the Berea as one of the centres. He said the space is currently

used by driving schools that were moved from the site near the Central Fire station. several other sites across the Municipality have also been earmarked for development to accommodate a number of driving schools in the City.“EThekwini Municipality has

made positive strides in dealing with the challenge of space allocation for the schools. One of the measures we have taken in this planning phase is working with the Provincial

Education contributes immensely to the economic growth of the country. Education supports the growth of civil society, democracy and political stability, allowing people to learn about their rights and responsibilities as well as acquire the skills and knowledge necessary to exercise them.

EThekwini Municipality boasts the biggest number of libraries in the country and the number of residents with library memberships is also growing. One of the many exciting developments in the City centre is the construction of the new Central library, which will be the main branch linking all libraries in the City.

south africa is a much better place than it was before 1994 and building capacity in all sectors of our economy through education is the primary factor that has helped us to be where we are today.

Efforts have been made to improve the education system in terms of infrastructural upgrades, curriculum changes and many more other interventions that were put in place by the democratic government of the new south africa, but we cannot depend on government alone.

This then calls for a collective effort from all sectors of society to work together and tackle education challenges.

department of Transport, to create a database of driving schools in the City so that we are able to provide facilities where they are needed,” nxumalo added. The plan forms part of City’s

Road safety strategy. The driver development park will provide a “one-stop-shop” service for the development and assessment of drivers. The plan entails establishing

a number of well- resourced driver development Parks in which driving schools can provide training to learner drivers. These parks will be used by driving schools to conduct their business, and would have classrooms for lectures, tracks for skills training, driving stimulators, waiting areas and on-going refresher courses for all public transport drivers in the City.

The Head of EThekwini Transport authority, Thami Manyathi said: “The City values the role of drivers and they are key for the success of the Road safety strategy. inappropriate and aggressive driving behavior exposes road users to the risk of accidents, together with the known drastic consequences. The parks will provide an enabling environment for good driving behavior and promote a culture of professionalism.” Manyathi added that the Municipality will approach the KwaZulu-natal department of Transport and its Road Traffic inspectorate, the national department of Transport, and the Road Traffic Management Corporation to discuss the concept of driver development Parks because matters around licencing are a national and Provincial competency.

TO reinforce the message that trucks and trucking companies operating and driving illegally on suburban roads will not be tolerated, Metro Police conducted an enforcement operation this week where numerous trucks were fi ned. This was done as part of the

City’s daily by-law enforcement operation. The blitz comes after reported incidents of trucks illegally making use of suburban roads such as Glenwood and south durban.Metro Police superintendent

anand Maharaj said the enforcement was a response to a call by City residents to remove trucks from their roads.“There have been numerous

complaints made to the City about trucks that were driving on residential roads and causing a nuisance and damaging roads,” he said.Maharaj said the enforcement

yielded positive results, further highlighting that this behaviour would not be tolerated. To further combat the issue,

the eThekwini Transport

authority has developed the ‘integrated strategic Framework and action Plan for the eThekwini Municipal area’. This plan will look at all freight

and logistics interventions which will be required for the next 20 years to manage and improve freight activity in the Municipal area. One of the fi ndings and

recommendations from the plan was the requirement to build the Cato Ridge intermodal Hub.it is envisaged that the

hub will be jointly planned, developed and operated by the City alongside a private operator. The plan suggested that further investigation be carried out to determine the ideal operating model. To date, a stakeholder forum,

which all land owners in the area form part of, has been formed. Maharaj said regular

enforcement would continue until all transgressors were brought to book.
