7. DO NOT CONNECT a wood burning stoveto an aluminum Type B gas vent. This is notsae. Use approved masonry or a UL 103 HTListed Residential Type and Building Heat-ing Appliance Chimney. Use a 6” diameterchimney or larger, that is high enough togive a good drat. (See specifcs in installationinstructions).

8. Be sure that your chimney is saely con-structed and in good repair. Have the chimneyinspected by the fre department or a qualifedinspector. Your insurance company should beable to recommend a qualifed inspector.

21. Do not overire the stove. Overiring willoccur i the eed door is let open duringoperation. Such actions can result in verydangerous operating conditions.

22. All power cords and electrical appliancesand/or assemblies must be kept outside o theclearance dimensions shown in this manual orcombustible materials.

9. Creosote or soot may build up in the chimneyconnector and chimney and cause a house/ building re. Inspect the chimney connectorand chimney twice monthly during the heatingseason and clean i necessary. (See ChimneyMaintenance, page 10).

10. In the event o a chimney re, turn the aircontrol to closed position, leave the buildingand CALL THE FIRE DEPARTMENT IM-MEDIATELY! Have a clearly understood planon how to handle a chimney re by contactingyour local re authority or inormation onproper procedures in the event o a chimneyre.

11. To prevent injury, do not allow anyone to usethis stove who is unamiliar with the correctoperation o the stove.

infuence o drugs or alcohol.13. Ashes should not be allowed to accumulate

higher than the optional grate or slide damper.Dispose o ashes in a metal container with atight tting lid. Keep the closed container ona noncombustible foor or on the ground, wellaway rom all combustible materials. Keep theashes in the closed container until all cindershave thoroughly cooled. The ashes may beburied in the ground or picked up by a reusecollector.

14. The special paints used on your stove maygive o some smoke and an odor whilethey are curing during the rst 12 to 15 res.Additional smoke and odor may be emittedrom the light oils used in construction o there box. This should disappear ater a shortperiod o time and not occur again. Personswith lung conditions or owners o susceptibledomestic pets (such as birds) should takeprudent precautions. Open windows anddoors as needed to clear smoke and/or odor.Paint discoloration will occur i the stove is

overred.15. This stove has a painted surace which

is durable but it will not stand rough handlingor abuse. When installing your stove, use carein handling. Clean with soap and warm waterwhen stove is NOT hot. Do not use any acidsor scouring soap, as these solvents wear anddull the nish.

Proper clearances must be maintained or adequateair circulation. Adequate ventilation must be

provided while operating this stove.1. The stove must be placed on solid concrete, sol-

id masonry, or when installed on a combustiblefoor, on a listed foor protector, such as Hy-C orImperial Model UL 4870BK or equivalent witha 0.8 R-actor. CONNECTOR PIPE INSTAllATION

1. The smooth end o the stovepipe ts over thecast iron damper collar. Secure with three (3)sheet metal screws.

2. Horizontal pipe runs must slope upwardstowards the chimney at least 1/4” per oot o horizontal run.

3. You must have at least 18 inches o clearancebetween any horizontal piping and the ceil-ing.

4. The pipe cannot extend into the chimney fue(gure 3).

5. Secure pipe/elbow sections with three (3) sheetmetal screws at each joint to make the pipingrigid.

6. It is recommended that no more than two (2)90° bends be used in the stovepipe installa-

tion. The use o more than two 90° bends maydecrease the amount o draw and possiblycause smoke spillage. Where possible, use onlycorrugated (nonadjustable) elbows. Theseprovide a better seal.

7. The connector pipe must not pass through an

attic or roo space, closet, or any concealedspace, or foor, ceiling, wall or combustibleconstruction. A UL 103 HT Listed chimneymust be used rom the rst penetration o ceiling or wall to the chimney cap. Never usesingle wall connector pipe as a chimney - ahouse fre could result.

CHImNEY CONNECTIONS

The stove must be connected to either a ma-

sonry or manuactured metal chimney built and

tested to the specications listed on the previous

pages.

Chimneys perorm two unctions:

1). As a means o exhausting smoke and fue

gases which are the result o uel combustion.

2). The chimney provides “drat” which allows

oxygen to be continuously introduced into the

appliance, so that proper combustion is possible.

This stove relies on natural drat to operate.

NOTICE: Always provide a sorce o resh air

into the room where the stove is located. Failre

to do so may reslt in air starvation o other el

brning appliances and the possible development

o hazardos conditions, fre or death.

Your stove itsel does not create drat. Drat is

provided by the chimney. To achieve proper dratyour chimney must meet the three minimum height

requirements detailed in gures 4–7. A minimum

o 0.05 w.c. (measured in water column) is required

or proper drating to prevent back pung, smoke

spillage, and to maximize perormance. (Gauges to

measure drat are readily available at stove stores

and are economical to rent or purchase.)

Factors such as wind, barometric pressure,

trees, terrain and chimney temperature can have

an adverse eect on the drat. The manuacturer

cannot be held responsible or external actors

leading to less than optimal drating.

Should you have a problem with inadequate

drat, you should contact a licensed heating and

cooling contractor or assistance in solving the

problem.

ImPORTANT Installation Points1. Size chimney fue to stove collar. This stove

requires a 6” diameter fue.

2. Never connect this unit to a chimney serv-

ing another appliance.3. The chimney must meet all minimum

height requirements.

4. Never use a chimney to ventilate a cellar

or basement.

5. Contact your local building authority

or approved methods o installation and any

necessary permits and/or inspections.

mASONRY CHImNEYBeore using an existing masonry chimney,

clean the chimney, inspect the fue liner and make

any repairs needed to be sure it is sae to use. Make

repairs beore attaching the stove. The connec-

tor stove pipe and ttings you will need to con-

nect directly to a masonry chimney are shown in

gure 4.

I the connector stove pipe must go through

a combustible wall beore entering the masonry

chimney, consult a qualied mason or chimney

dealer. The installation must conorm to local

building and re codes and latest edition o NFPA

211.

INSTALLATION AND USE.


Use only 6” diameter listed chimney UL 103

HT. Chimney made to this listing is High Tempera-

ture rated to 2100 degrees Fahrenheit. Use chimney

rom only one manuacturer. Never mix brands.

Careully ollow the chimney manuacturer’s stated

requirements and clearances. Use the chimneymanuacturer’s attic guards, roo supports, fashing

and re stops when passing through a ceiling. Use a

listed thimble when passing through a combustible

wall. Do not use makeshit compromises during

installation. Never se a single-wall connection

pipe as a chimney!

When using a pre-existing chimney, have it’s

condition and installation inspected beore using.

Make sure that the chimney meets all o the UL

rating requirements listed above. Be aware that

not all manuactured chimney is o the UL 103

HT type.

NOTE: It is recommended that you contact a li-

censed heating and cooling contractor (consult your

local yellow pages) or chimney installation.

Manuactured chimney with the proper required

UL listing is available rom most home centers,

hardware stores, and HVAC supply stores.

VENTING TO EXISTING FIREPLACEIn some instances, people desire to convert an

existing replace or stove use. Usually, sae con-

nection to an existing masonry chimney requires

more work than using a preabricated chimney.

The existing replace must be closed and sealed at

the damper with high-temperature caulk, ceramic

wool, or urnace cement. Prior to installation, clean

and inspect the existing fue and smoke shel. In-

stallation should be designed so the system can be

dismantled or periodic cleaning and inspection.

Beore conversion, make sure the existing chimney

is structurally sound, the chimney incorporates a

fue liner and make sure it is in good condition.

(A fue liner consists o clay tile that protects the

brickwork o a chimney. I a chimney does not have

a liner, or it is damaged, have it relined by a proes-sional. DO NOT uSE a chimney that is nlined

or damaged!) I you have any question regarding

the condition o the chimney, consult a qualied

licensed contractor, qualied engineer, competent

mason, certied Chimney Sweep, or a knowledg-

able inspector. Consult your insurance company i

you cannot nd a qualied expert.

CAUTION: Not all freplaces are suitableor conversion to a ood stove. Chec ith a ualifed expert.

Many preabricated ireplaces are o the

“zero-clearance replace” category. These consist

o multilayered metal construction. They are de-

signed with enough insulation and/or air cooling

on the base, back and sides so they can be saely

installed in direct contact with combustible foors

and walls. Although many preabricated replaces

carry endorsements rom nationally recognized

organizations or use as replaces, they have not

been tested or connection to wood stove heaters.

Connecting a stove to such a device will void the

manuacturer’s warranty.

Steel-lined ireplaces are constructed with

1/4” rebox liner, an air chamber in connectionwith 8” o masonry. These can be saely used with

wood burning stoves. They contain all the essential

components o a replace, rebox, damper, throat,

smoke shel, and smoke chamber. Many look iden-

tical to masonry replaces and should be checked

careully beore connecting a stove to them.

Venting a stove directly into a replace does

not meet code and should not be attempted. (This

constitutes connection to another appliance - the

replace.) Combustion products will be deposited

and build up in the rebox or replace. The stovewarranty will be void with such an installation. Do

not create a hazard in your home by connecting in

this manner.

FIREPLACE INSTALLATION

Do Not Attept to route chiney con-nector pipe through the throat o a fre-place. Directly connecting the stovepipe into the

existing masonry chimney (gure 12 “Type A”

replace conversion) o the replace is the only ap-

proved method o installation. This is a complicated

and involved process and to insure saety should

only by done by a qualied installer.1. An entry hole must be cut through the masonry

and tile liner with minimal damage to the liner.At least 8” o liner must remain below the entryposition. When locating the stove and stove-pipe, all minimum clearances must be observedrom combustible suraces including mantels,combustible trimwork, ceilings and walls.Positioning the center o the stove pipe entryinto the chimney 24” below the ceiling should

insure proper clearance or a 6” stovepipe.2. Install a metal or re clay (5/8” minimum thick-

ness) thimble. Make sure the thimble is fushwith the inner surace o the chimney liner anddoes not protrude into the fue (see gure 4 onpage 6).

3. Secure the thimble with reractory mortar. Thethimble should be surrounded by 8” o solidunit masonry brickwork or 24” o stone.

4. Install the stovepipe into the thimble as ar aspossible without extending past the fue lining

(see gures 4 on page 6).5. A small airspace (about 1/2”) should remain

between the stovepipe and thimble to allow orexpansion o the pipe. Seal this airspace withhigh-temperature caulking or ceramic wool.

6. Secure and seal the damper in the closed posi-tion using high-temp caulking, ceramic wool,or urnace cement. Also check to see i thechimney has a cleanout. I it does, make sure itis closed and sealed as well. A leaky cleanoutwill greatly reduce drat eciency.

This stove is designed to burn

wOOD FUEL ONLY.Hardwood, 18” to 20” should be split and air

dried (seasoned), or 6 months to obtain maximum

burning eciency. Wood should be stored in a dry,

well ventilated area.

NOTICE: USE SOLID wOOD mATERIALS ONLY.

DO NOT BURN GARBAGE OR FLAmmABLEFLUIDS. DO NOT USE COAL AS COAL OR

CHARCOAL wILL DESTROY THE GRATE AND/ OR THE FIREBOX.

NOTE: A 2” layer o sand or a layer o frebric should be used as botto insulation in theBoxood stove. An optional cast iron grate,26G, ay be used instead o frebric or

sand. See Accessory Sheet included iththis anual or ordering inoration.

LIGHTING1. Open drat damper ully to provide maximum

drat.

2. Open the eed door and place several wads o crushed paper in the rebox.

3. Lay small stacks o kindling on the paper tostart the re.

4. Light the paper and kindling, close the door

and secure tightly.5. Add uel ater re is burning briskly. Use care

not to smother the kindling re when addingwood. Close the door and secure tightly.

6. Adjust the drat damper and slide dratcontrol. The more closed the slide drat is set,the lower and slower the re will burn. Themore open, the aster and hotter the re willburn. Do not over re the stove.

ADDING FUEL

Add small amounts o uel each hour or soinstead o piling large quantities o uel at one

time. This will insure a more complete combustion

process and less buildup o tars, soot, or creosote

will occur in the chimney.1. Always open drat damper beore opening the

eed door.

2. When adding uel be careul not to smother there.

3. Close the eed door and secure tightly.

4. Adjust the damper and slide drat control.

5. Empty ashes regularly. Do not allow ashesto pile up higher than the top lip o the slidedrat.

6. Properly dispose o hot ashes (see Saety

Instructions, item #13 on page 2.)7. Do not over re the stove.

ASH DISPOSAL – Do not allow ashes to

accumulate higher than the slide drat. Dispose o

properly. (See Saety Instructions #13, page 2.)

CHImNEY DRAFT – Drat is a unction o

the chimney, not the stove — do not expect the

stove to draw. Smoke spillage into the house or

excessive buildup o condensation or creosote in

the chimney are warnings that the chimney is NOT

unctioning properly. Correct the problem beoreusing the stove. Following are some possible causes

or improper drat.

1. The connector stovepipe may be pushed

into the chimney too ar, stopping the drat.

2. I the chimney temperature is too cool,

water will condense in the chimney and run back

into the stove. Creosote ormation will be rapid

and may block the chimney. Operate the stove at a

re level high enough to keep the chimney warm

to prevent condensation rom orming.

3. I the re burns well but sometimes createsexcess smoke or burns slowly, it may be caused by

the chimney top being lower than another part o

the house or a nearby tree. The wind blowing over

a house or tree, alls on top o the chimney like

water over a dam, beating down the smoke. The

top o the chimney should be at least three (3) eet

above the roo and be at least two (2) eet higher

than any point o the roo within ten (10) eet.

CREOSOTE – Foration and Reoval. Slow-burning wood produces tar and other organic

vapors which combine with expelled moisture to

orm creosote. Creosote vapors condense in the

relatively cool chimney fue o a slow-burning re.

As a result, creosote residue accumulates on the fue

lining. I ignited, this creosote creates an extremelyhot re which may ignite surrounding materials

resulting in a building re.

I creosote has accumulated, it should be

removed. Failure to remove creosote may result

in ignition and may cause a house/building re.

Creosote may be removed using a chimney brush

or other commonly available materials rom your

local hardware retailer.

CHImNEY INSPECTIONS – The chimney

connector and chimney should be inspected at thebeginning o and at least twice a month during

the heating season to determine i a creosote buildup

has occurred.

Chimney res burn very hot. I the chimney

connector should glow red, reduce the re by clos-

ing the damper and spin drat control and immedi-

ately call the re department. contined on next page

A ire in the stove may be smothered by

pouring a large quantity o coarse salt, baking soda,

or cool ashes on top o the re.

STOVE jOINTS – Reuired Tune-up.This stove is manuactured with cast iron

components. IT DOES NOT HAVE WELDED

SEAMS. Periodic “tune up” may be required by

relling and/or replacing the cement/joint mortar

along the seams where the cast iron components

meet.
