25TH ANNIVERSARY YEAR February 15-16, 2020

of WatercolorSplash of Watercolor is the Brevard Watercolor Society’s annual mem-bers’ show. It is the largest display of watercolor paintings for sale in Bre-vard County. It offers beautiful framed paintings ready to hang. There is a marketplace where artists sell prints, unframed originals, note cards and oth-er items created from their original art.

Stroll the show and enter a vote for your favorite painting into “The Peo-ple’s Choice Award” ballot box. Bid on exquisite art and other items in the silent auction. Buy raffle tickets for your chance to win an amazing gift bas-ket, a painting from the “Paint Around” or 50/50.

Demos are ongoing all weekend. The “Paint Around” typically takes place around 3:00pm on Saturday. This is an event to behold! Five artists provide a composition which they paint on first

for 10 minutes, then time is up and they pass to the artist on their left. This con-tinues until each artist has their origi-nal composition back with 10 minutes to fully complete. Five amazing paint-ings are created right before your eyes! Buy raffle tickets for the chance to win one of your choice.

This year there will be a special exhibit of paintings to commemorate BWS’s 25th Anniversary. These paintings will be offered at a special price with pro-ceeds to benefit a charitable cause.

The Florida Watercolor Society’s 48th Annual Exhibition and Convention on September 19-22, 2019 was amazing! The event was headquartered at the Doubletree Hotel and Resort, just steps away from SeaWorld in Orlando near International Drive. The Florida Wa-tercolor Society (FWS) has over 1,000 members and it seemed like all of them were there, including a large contin-gent from BWS.

There were many wonderful demon-strations, workshops and great teach-ers, including BWS members Therese Ferguson and Frank Spino. Carol Carter, the jurist, gave a detailed re-view of the 100-plus paintings. Many “stars” were spotted, and were even ap-proachable. Lori Jenkins won the raffle for TWO of the paintings generated in the paint-arounds. Way to go, Lori!

The reception was held at Leu Gardens, a wonderful destination on its own. The exhibition was beautifully hung, with 103 paintings on display.

“Joining BWS over 10 years ago is one of the best things I’ve ever done. It’s so easy to make friends, GOOD friends, with people having the same passion for creating art. To me, the three opportunities BWS membership offers and has helped me grow as an artist are: interactive member demonstrations given monthly resulting in a wide variety of technique and viewpoints; watching nationally and internationally-known artists demonstrate at bi-monthly membership meetings; and the opportunity to show and sell your work (or just ‘test the waters’ for your future display) at our annual ‘Splash’ show.” - BARBARA RIOS

New Website !

Throughout the years, I have always felt blessed to see people in various organi-zations volunteer to work together for the common good. At the September 14th general meeting, I experienced that same cohesive feeling of camara-derie when I saw my fellow artists step forward and volunteer to fill vacant of-fices, chair a committee or join a com-mittee that needed help. The board put out a call for help and the membership said YES.

We are proud to announce the new BWS elected officers: 1st Vice Presi-dent (workshops) is Karen Krosnick; 2nd Vice President (Membership) is Barbara Rios, and Secretary is Mary Warnick. I also wish to thank Cathy Robinson for volunteering to be our new greeter, and Pat Bowlds and Grace Delanoy for all their hard work in cre-ating our lovely new website.

Special thanks to Frank Spino for the wonderful demo immediately follow-ing our meeting. We all appreciate the opportunity to learn from such a talent-ed artist, and are fortunate to have him as an active member.

After the meeting, I received an email from Phyllis Marple offering to chair a committee of BWS members to run Splash 2020. The committee is com-posed of Debbie Whalen, Cindy McK-ee, Lolly Walton and of course, Phyllis Marple. What a pleasant surprise it was to discover that they were willing to take on this monumental job for us.

Currently, we need chairs for Publicity (other than Splash), Plein-air, a web-master apprentice, and more teachers willing to do mini workshops. If you are interested in any of these positions, let any board member or committee chair know.

- DONAH MILLER
