    SABRE SIGMA BREATHING APPARATUS

    There are 6 Sabre - Sigma Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) units onboard as a part ofFiremans outfit and 1 set as spare for use during tank entry etc.

    They are located at the following locations:

    a) Fire Control Station 2 sets

    b) Steering Gear Room 2 sets

    c) Port Midship (SOPEP) Locker 2 sets (spare)

    The main parts of this SCBA are:

    a) Back plate, including harness assembly.

    b) Pressure Reducer

    c) Demand valve.

    d) Face Mask.

    e) 6-liter, 207 bars cylinder fitted with a valve.

    f) Bottle Pressure Gauge

    GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF BREATHING APPARATUS

    This equipment is used for entering any enclosed space which lacks sufficient air for breathing.

    Generally on board it is used for fighting fire in enclosed spaces or during rescue of personnel fromareas filled with hazardous vapors like rescue from pump room etc.

    The duration of working with a BA set on varies from person to person; hence it is important to be calmand cool rather than getting excited and anxious.

    Normally the working time will vary from 18 to 25 minutes.

    The BA sets are provided with a warning whistle which sounds when there is enough air left for thewearer to come out of the enclosed space.

    Personnel should leave the space as soon as the whistle is heard and never leave the space alone, theworking partner should also come out even if his whistle has not sounded.

    The whistle is designed to sound at a pressure of 50 60 bars and that zone is marked by red colour onthe pressure gauge (see picture below).

    Normally the wearer has 8 10 mins after the whistle blows off.
