BW Industries Purlin division carries out design and manufacture of light gauge pre-galvanised steel purlins and sheeting rails.

The systems are available in Zed or Cee section profile and are manufactured from pre-galvanised steel coil with a guaranteed yield strength of 450 N/mm.

Standard section depths range from 141mm to 341mm with thicknesses from 1.3mm to 3mm. All systems have a full range of accessories.

In addition to the standard range of sizes BW Industries also offers a range of bespoke sections which can be manufactured to an individual client’s requirements.

Section depths range from 50mm to 500mm with thicknesses from 0.5mm to 6mm.

Some bespoke sections are manufactured from lower yield strength materials.

BW Industries can roll sections up to 18m in length.

Fire Restraint Wall System Introduction contd

DesignBW Industries have developed software for the design of cold formed purlins, sheeting rails and mezzanine floor beams. This is provided as an aid to designers and specifiers to allow selection of the optimum section.

The software has been developed following extensive testing of sections by and under the approval of the SCI (Steel Construction Institute), this was undertaken to accurately determine bending capacities.

The software is for designs in accordance with BS EN 1993 this being the relevant european design standard.

The software has been developed by a chartered structural engineer and has been independently checked and verified by the SCI.

Fully comprehensive technical support is available from our design team.

All of the steelwork is 100% recyclable, all steel is currently manufactured using 40% recycled steel.

DetailingBW Industries produce standard detailing sheets which allow detailers to order standard sections and components. The information on these sheets is used to generate a CAM data file which is then fed directly into the manufacturing system.

Standard details are available on a number of electronic draughting packages such as Strucad and Autocad.

BW Industries also have facilities to produce detail drawings as required for any project.

Non standard sections and non standard hole sizes and or punchings can be accommodated on request.

SustainabilityBW Industries are committed to supporting and developing sustainability throughout all its departments.

Steel is one of the most recycled materials used in the world, use of recycled material does not compromise the quality of new steel produced from it.

By addressing key issues such as product design, CO2 emissions, recycling of waste materials and prudent use of all resources BW Industries take responsibility for managing environmental issues.

CostingFollowing selection of the optimum sections BW Industries provide competitive quotations for manufacture, supply and delivery.

BW Industries are pleased to offer this service for bespoke sections and for their large range of standard sections.

Fire Restraint Wall System Introduction contd

OrderingIn order to facilitate the ordering process BW Industries have a range of standard drawings and details which can be completed by the client. These are then used to prepare an acknowledgement which itemizes precisely what is required.

Alternatively BW Industries have in house draughting facilities to allow preparation of fabrication drawings and details.

ManufactureThe information on any fabrication drawings and details is programmed into a Cam data file which is transmitted directly to the rolling or fabrication plant.

Ancillary items are produced in conjunction with the manufacture of major components.

All major components are normally ink jet printed to show what they are and from which materials they have been formed. This process is so that there is a trail which shows exactly what has been manufactured.

Dispatch and SupplyBW Industries have a team of experienced personnel who hand pick the items for dispatch and load these onto the vehicles which have been arranged for onward transportation. Depending on the end users requirements specialist vehicles with on board lifting equipment can be arranged to facilitate material off-loading at the delivery address.

CertificationBW Industries have developed design software based on the methodology in the relevant European standards and extensive testing of their product range.

This information has been independently assessed and approved by the SCI who are an internationally recognized authority in the field of light gauge steelwork design and construction.

BW Industries are pleased to display the SCI logo and to confirm that their products have achieved SCI Assessed status with the appropriate certification.

BW ‘Z’ Section Sleeves

BW ‘Z’ Section Standard Hole Details

The sleeved purlin system is suitable for buildings with two or more bays and utilises single span length purlins with sleeves. The sleeves are formed from the same section as the purlins but are installed inverted.

The sleeves, which achieve a high degree of continuity over the purlin supports are fitted at all penultimate rafter connections and staggered on all internal bays, allow economy of purlin section selection.

The system can be used for single span purlins and for double span purlins.

Fire Restraint Wall System Lap System

Purlins Lap System

The lap system is a further variation of the sleeved system which is suitable for buildings with five or more bays. Extended single span purlins are alternatively inverted and overlapped with each other.

The lapped section has the benefit of achieving a high degree of continuity over the purlin supports thus allowing economic section selection.

The avoidance of sleeves means that there are fewer system components and additionally reduced site erection time.

The heavy end bay system is a variation of the sleeved system which is suitable for buildings with five or more bays.

Heavier gauge sections are fitted to the end bays with corresponding heavy gauge sleeves to all penultimate rafter connections.

Inner bay purlins are of lighter gauge as are the inner bay sleeves which are fitted at every connection.

The system can be used with double span inner bay purlins with fewer inner sleeves.

Fire Restraint Wall System Roof Variations

Monopitch Roof

Tiled/Mansard Roof

For monopitch and other roofs where there is no restraint to the ridge purlin via apex ties some equivalent anchor must be used. This may take the form of a simple tie to a substantial ridge beam or alternatively by a combination of struts and diagonal bracing between the top two purlins.

Restraints should be used at mid-span for purlin spans greater than 3.5m and at one third and two thirds of span for purlin spans greater than 7.5m.

For long roof slopes additional diagonal bracing may be required.

These types of roof covering may cause bending about both axes of the roof purlins due to their weight. In order to provide adequate restraint rigid struts should be used in lieu of anti sag ties. The ridge purlins should be tied using a rigid apex strut. Diagonal bracing wires are required between the top two purlins. Additional diagonal bracing will be required for every 6m length of roof slope.

The struts should be arranged such that the maximum unrestrained purlin length is restricted to 2m.

The timber rafters should be joined across the apex or be fixed to a ridge board.

Fire Restraint Wall System Roof Variations contd

Non-restraining Cladding to Roof

Steep Roof

Many modern cladding systems do not provide adequate lateral restraint to the top flange of the purlins. In this situation it is necessary to replace the standard anti-sag ties with angle strut braces.

The struts should be arranged such that the maximum unrestrained purlin length is restricted to 2m.

For roof pitches greater than 25° diagonal bracing should always be provided.

These diagonal wires used in conjunction with angle strut sag bars allow for bending about both axes of the purlin.

Rigid apex ties are also required.

is in excess of 4.6m so that the laterally unsupported length does not exceed 3.8m. For Z301 & Z341 Purlins use ‘sheeting rail’ type angle braces (as diagram) above.

It is recommended the above detail is adhered to if wind loadings ■■

are unknown or doubtful.

In some cases Anti-sag Ties are not required. This situation ■■

demands that temporary props/bars are used until the sheeting is fixed, but regardless of wind loading, the absolute maximum spans without permanent ties are: Z141, Z151, Z171, Z201 .......................................... up to 6.1m Z231 ............................................................................ up to 7.1m Z261 ............................................................................. up to 7.6m Z301, Z341 ................................................................. up to 8.1m

Side Rails Sleeved System

The sleeved side rail system is suitable for buildings with two or more bays and utilizes single span length side rails with sleeves. The sleeves are formed from plain channel section ie without lips.

The sleeves, which achieve a high degree of continuity over the side rail supports are fitted at all penultimate column connections

and staggered on internal bays, allow economy of side rail section selection.

The system can be used for single span side rails and for double span side rails.

All holes are 14mm diameter unless stated otherwise. All holes are punched in pairs on standard gauge lines.

Cee Section members are ideal for framing doors and windows.

When the sections are arranged so that the web is orientated towards the opening, a flush surface is able to accept fixing of the door and window frames.

The flush surface is achieved by using either flush rivets or counterformed holes and packer plates, in conjunction with standard trimmer cleats which are sized to suit the sheeting rail section being used.

Cleats are either long reach or short reach depending on cee section orientation.

Long reach cleats are required when the web is not orientated towards the opening and for jamb to rail connections.

Short reach cleats are required when the web is orientated towards the opening.

Fire Restraint Wall System Fire Restraint Wall System

In certain applications it is necessary to include fire protection to some or all of the perimeter walls around the building. There are many fire resistant wall cladding systems which are available today.

General Notes

The rail or cleat is slotted longitudinally (14mm x 50mm) on the standard gauge lines. 60mm gap required between ends of rails.

Fixing bolts to all joints must be fitted with a combustible washer, which will collapse under fire conditions, to allow movement for the rail to expand.

The period of resistance is solely dependent on the cladding material used, and the type of construction. A certificate should be obtained from the cladding supplier.

All primary structural steelwork, supporting the rails and cladding, should be fire protected.
