Buzzin’ in the Hive Dear Graden Families: Celebrations are very important part of the learning process. We held our first quarter celebration/pep assembly on Thursday, October 11. The assembly began with our spirit leaders getting us “pumped up” with hornet spirit. We recognized students who served in various building leadership roles during the first quarter; we also recognized students who exemplified the 8 Habits, students who met grade level academic and personal goals. The assembly ended with students who met their goals playing a relay game, and a good time was had by all. The assembly was facilitated solely by our student leaders. Our hornets sure do have a lot of poise, school spirit, and pride! Additionally, on October 4, students participated in interest groups; we had students in team sports, cooking, Legos, technology, games, martial arts, and much more. These groups provide students an opportunity to practice Habit 8, Finding Their Voice. Students had the opportunity to spend 45 minutes in an interest group which they selected. Parent Teacher Conferences afforded us a wonderful formal opportunity to work as “team members” to collaborate and exchange information about how your child is doing at school. Even though there is only one formal Parent Teacher Conference scheduled this semester, please do not hesitate to contact us throughout the year with any questions or concerns you have about your child. We always have time for that! We have yet to meet our goal of having 100% of our families attend conference. If you were unable to attend conferences during the scheduled days, we are more than happy to accommodate your schedule. Please call the office to schedule an appointment. If we don’t hear from you, you will be hearing from us. The Graden School Store is a big hit. The Student Lighthouse Team is operating the store as a community service project. The Student Lighthouse Team has selected to donate the proceeds from the Graden School Store to The Ronald McDonald Houses at Children’s Mercy and to the Graden Library; they will be selecting books to enhance our collection. Counselor’s Corner

Dear Graden Families, National Bullying Prevention Month was a success at Graden! Below are the specific lesson topics we addressed by each grade level: Kindergarten: How to be a buddy with Llama, Llama and the Bully Goat 1st Grade: Tattling vs. Reporting with Spookley the Square Pumpkin 2nd Grade: Bully B.E.A.N.S. 3rd Grade: Spreading Kindness/Bullying Kahoot! Game 4th Grade: Rude vs. Mean vs. Bullying with the Bullying Scoot Game 5th Grade: Breaking the Bully Chains Escape Room Challenge This month I will be working on cultivating positive emotion regulation and coping skills through core counseling lessons. It is my hope that by learning how to utilize healthy coping skills, our students will develop grit and resilience as they navigate through life in and outside of school. As always, please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions at all or would like to meet face to face. I can be reached by email at [email protected] or by phone at 816-359-5647. I look forward to another great month in the hive! Go Hornets! All my best, Cari Cetola School Counselor Graden Elementary

Spotting Great Leaders at Graden

Reinforcing personal development and leadership — that is what Graden’s Spotting Great Leaders Club is all about. The Spotting Great Leaders program is replacing the High Five Program, which was introduced in December 2012 to recognize personal development and leadership. Students who are selected each month will receive a certificate which they can redeem at the 63rd Street Sonic location in Parkville, Missouri. A polka dot with the child’s name will be displayed on the wall inside Graden Elementary for the month they are awarded. At the end of each month, the polka dots are taken down and replaced with a new polka dot honoring students for the next month. We are so proud of our Graden Leaders!

Please join us in congratulating all of the members of our “Spotting Great Leaders Club!”

All students in physical education class will be focusing on movement and muscles. Students will be learning the muscles in their body and they will be learning how the specific muscles are being used and how to strengthen those muscles through physical activity. Grades 3rd-5th will be starting sports skills and will be working on a variety of sports specific lead up games while following the rules and cooperating with others. Just a reminder that it is extremely important that students come dressed appropriately for physical activity. Tennis shoes with laces and appropriate gym clothes are required for participation and for safety.

A Note from the Music Room Graden's 5th grade did a great job with their program "The Greatest Show" and started the year's performances with a bang. The next one coming up is 3rd grade on November 6th, with their program "How to Be a Pirate." It's going to be another great night. Aaaargh me matey!
