New from NHTSA National Teen Driver Safety Week

October 15-21, 2017

Motor vehicle crashes are a leading cause of death for 15- to 20- year olds in the United States. In 2015, there were 1,886 young drivers age 15 to 20 years old who died in motor vehicle crashes and an estimated 195,000 who were injured. Parents need to take the time to talk with their teens about the many dangers of driving. Those dangers include the following: >Alcohol and both prescription and illicit drugs >Lack of seat belt use >Distracted driving >Speeding >Number of passengers >Drowsy driving

These free safety materials can help start the conversation with your teen driver about the rules of the road. Even if you

think they don't hear you, they do.

Set the Rules Before They Hit the Road.

New from NHTSA

Marijuana Impaired Driving – A Report to Congress (DOT HS 812 440; July 2017) This report was prepared to inform the public that drugs other than alcohol, including marijuana, are absorbed, distributed and eliminated from the body differently than alcohol. While blood alcohol concentration (BAC) correlates closely with impairment, there is no such measure (e.g., THC) for marijuana that correlates with impairment. Thus, a BAC-equivalent impairment measure is not possible.

Impact of the Legalization and Decriminalization of Marijuana on the DWI System – Highlights from the Expert Panel Meeting (DOT HS 812 430; June 2017) In accordance with the FAST Act, NHTSA and the Governor’s Highway Safety Association (GHSA) convened an expert panel to study recreational and/or medical marijuana laws and their effect on driving, including law enforcement, prosecutors, judges, probation, toxicologists, and highway safety officials. The panel identified changes to the DWI system following enactment of laws legalizing and/or decriminalizing marijuana for medical and/or recreational purposes; identified lessons learned; and found measures that should be used to evaluate these laws and their impact on traffic safety and the DWI system.
