Smart watches seem to be all the rage in the technology industry this year. A handful of companies, including heavy hitters Apple and Microsoft, have tossed their hat into the ring and developed these tech-savvy watches. But what exactly is a smartwatch? Asmartwatch is acomputerizedwristwatch with the capability to do so much more than simply keep time. Many of todays smartwatches runmobile apps, while a smaller number of models run amobile operating systemand function asportable media players, offering playback ofFM radio, audio, and video files to the user via aBluetoothheadset.

Some smartwatches models also feature fullmobile phonecapability, and can make or answer phone calls.Depending on the company and model of the smartwatch, they can do some pretty amazing things, including a camera, accelerometer, thermometer, barometer, and compass.Others offer even more features such as a chronograph, calculator, cell phone, touch screen,GPS navigation, map display, speaker, scheduler, the ability to read SDcards, andrechargeable battery. It may communicate with awireless headset,heads-up display, insulin pump, microphone, modem, or other devices.

These little devices have the capabilities to do some pretty tremendous things having sports and medical applications along with specs for the everyday user. It is no wonder once one was developed, a bunch of other tech companies jumped on the bandwagon and these are gaining so much popularity. But still you may be asking, Why would people buy watches with this much technology?Simply put, human beings have turned into a group of savage, tech-hungry beasts that want all of the best available features in the most compact vehicle possible. Im not saying everyone wants or needs every feature.

In fact, the masses will probably only use a fraction of the features offered. However, there is a pretty big chunk of the tech industry that insists on cramming in every possible capability into the smallest of nooks and crannies.

Of course, the next question is How much do these things cost for all of their features? Again, it all depends on which companies and models you look at. Microsofts Band is more geared toward fitness and tracking activity and can be purchased for $199.99 from the Microsoft store. Both Apple and Huaweihave products that offer more bang for the buck, including the ability to use apps, text by voice, answer phone calls and more, however neither company has released their products, or hinted at any price lines yet, for the year 2015.

Apple is expected to release their version of the smartwatch (all 34 variants of it) in April of this year, while Huawei has only stated the middle of the year.

Smartwatches seem to be the in-trend item for any tech-savvy person, and maybe the products will get streamlined more for use by the general public by next year after they have all been released, the bugs have been worked out, and companies determine which feature consumers want most. Hopefully well see some products with the main capabilities at cheaper prices for the masses than those jam-packed with everything under the sun. Either way, this is going to be an interesting year in technological advances.
