Proven Results for Hot Mix and Warm Mix Products

For decades, BASF has been helping road engineers around the U.S. toimprove the performance of their asphalt roads and highways.

Butonal® styrene butadiene (SBR) polymer dispersions increase the durability of asphalt roads at high, intermediate, and low temperatures.SBR polymers help asphalt roads last longer under all climate conditions.Whether you are specifying hot mix asphalt (HMA) or warm mix asphalt(WMA) paving systems, Butonal® SBR polymer dispersions can help.

Since its introduction in the late 1980's, Butonal® NS 175 and, through innovation in the mid 1990's, Butonal® NX 1129, anionic SBR polymers have been improving the strength and durability of structural and ultra thin lift hot mix and warm mix asphalt pavement systems.

Pavement Preservation Savings with Surface Treatments

Butonal® NS 198 and Butonal® NX 1138 cationic styrene butadiene polymers are specifically designed to provide high performance in surface treatment pavement preservation systems including chip seal, slurry seal, and micro surfacing.

Making Ultra Thin Hot Mix and Warm Mix Overlays Possible

Applied over structurally sound pavements, ultra thin HMA and WMAoverlays provide a long-lasting, cost-effective alternative to a typical structural overlay.

To ensure longevity, it is essential that an ultra thin HMA and WMA pavement provide superior resistance to rutting, fatigue and low temperature cracking. Butonal® NS 175 and Butonal NX® 1129 SBR polymers can be used to modify the asphalt cement binder to meetSuperpave “Plus” specifications as well as to improve conventional binder properties such as softening point and penetration.

Eco-Benefits of Warm Mix Asphalt

Warm mix technology is being used to create longer lasting roads while at the same time reducing energy consumption and emission of volatileorganic compounds, thus improving working conditions for applicationcrews and reducing the impact on the environment.

BASF research shows that the use of emulsion-based warm mix pavingtechnology can lower the asphalt plant mixing and field application temperatures by as much as 100 degrees Fahrenheit, leading to lessoxidative aging and heat hardening of the asphalt binder in the mix.Modifying the emulsion-based warm mix asphalt binder with Butonal® SBRpolymers can further reduce binder aging effects that could lead to anadditional two to five years of pavement service life.

Latex for Every Modification Need

BASF offers a wide range of polymer dispersions for asphalt modification designed to enhance themechanical properties of pavements resulting in greater durability, increased driving comfort, reducedroad maintenance costs and less impact on the environment. BASF is the global leader in the supplyof high solids SBR polymer dispersions for all types of asphalt modification for paving applications. Our high performance Butonal® asphalt modifiers set the industry standard and help customers tomeet and exceed federal and state Department of Transportation (DOT) specifications. By providingconsistent, high quality products, customers can easily meet their binder and mix performancerequirements. The chart below summarizes BASF's Butonal® high solids SBR polymer dispersionproduct portfolio for the asphalt paving market:

Global Center of Excellence for Asphalt Modifiers

The BASF Charlotte Technical Center (CTC) is the company’s global center of excellence for asphaltmodifiers including product and system research and development as well as customer service, sales, technical service and marketing support. In addition, BASF is the only high solids latex manufacturerin the U.S. that is active in research and product development for the asphalt emulsion and hot mixpaving markets.

Research & Development

BASF’s R&D and technical customer service laboratories provide full service to the asphalt emulsionand hot mix asphalt paving markets including:

• Formulation and production of unmodified and polymer-modified asphalt emulsions in-house on our pilot mill

• Full testing of emulsion liquid and recovered residue properties

• Chip seal, slurry seal and micro surfacing emulsion system performance testing

• Complete Superpave SHRP "Plus" asphalt binder testing

Dr. Koichi Takamura, a leading scientist in the field of latex polymer-modifiedasphalt emulsions, oversees BASF’s polymer product research and developmenteffort from bench scale through pilot plant polymerization to commercialization. He and his team use state-of-the-art lab polymerization and analytical facilities atCTC and in Germany for experimental product characterization as well as for customer technical service and field support efforts.
