ot that the last 41 years has been 100% smooth sailing at FCS, but
the past 8 months for our staff and families has been a very trying
time. The blessing of having students in school for the past 4
months has been worth every trial and challenge, as I’m sure you’ll
agree; nonetheless it has been challenging. And as Dr. King’s quote
describes, many in the FCS family have stood strong in this time of
challenge. The FCS family has proven itself in both “comfort and in
controversy”
When Virginia’s governor mandated his stay-at-home order on March
13, the FCS Administrative Team, the FCS Instructional Technology
staff, the FCS Faculty, AND FCS parents flew into action…and in
just 5 days we were ready to begin Online Learning. Long hours,
endless adjustments and fervent prayer were the order of the day,
every day, for the next two months. With God’s guiding hand, we
pulled together as a family, and accomplished something that was a
clear testimony to the entire Fredericksburg region. With diligent
effort by teachers, parents, and our IT staff, every class at every
grade level completed the curricular grade level goals and not one
student out of 840 students failed to complete the work. That, my
friends, is amazing.
Even now, as we have been able to return to school, this great
family is still working hard to keep our students in school, in the
midst of a pandemic, even while thousands of students in the
community around us, are either going to school online or
participating in hybrid models. God is still protecting us.
Diligence, commitment, attention to detail, a deep love for
children, and total reliance on Providence, have kept us
here.
As you read the updates in this Year in Review, you will be
reminded of the uniqueness of the FCS family and culture… something
that is, in many ways, indescribable. God has brought together, in
miraculous ways, an amazing group of parents and school staff
willing to do whatever it takes to raise up a generation for His
intended Kingdom purpose. Whether you are currently at FCS, an
Alum, or a friend, we are grateful and happy you are here!

had agreed to accept the position here at FCS. He was overjoyed
that Andy’s mentee would be serving in leadership at FCS.

ONLINE LEARNING
1115
On Friday, March 13, FCS faculty participated in a day-long crash
course in online learning in order to prepare for the possibility
it would become necessary. By the following, Monday, schools were
closed, and within five days, our online learning program was up
and running. The entire FCS family--students, families, teachers,
administrators, and support staff--teamed up to quickly adapt to
this new challenge, and our students were able to complete their
school year.

GRADUATION
In a year like no other, graduation exercises for the Class of 2020
were no exception. Due to social distancing requirements and
restrictions on large gatherings, FCS obtained special permission
to hold its first ever drive-in graduation.
Forty-nine seniors piled into vehicles with their families and
guests and pulled into assigned parking spaces in the front parking
lot. A podium was set up on the front porch, and Mr. Yost welcomed
the attendees via short-wave radio. As Mrs. Sizemore read their
names, vehicles (carefully directed by Dean Roper) pulled up to one
of three stations. Diplomas were presented to seniors by their
parents, and each group had a few moments to pose for pictures.
Seniors were also provided with DVD containing a video of the
event, photos, and videos of the traditional graduation speeches
which were pre-recorded.
While it certainly wasn't the graduation they envisioned, it was
surely one the students and their families won't forget. Special
thanks go out to Dean Roper for the meticulous planning needed to
make the event a success.
Congratulations to the Class of 2020.

ACADEMICS
As FCS continually works to improve instruction, cross-curricular
academics is a valuable tool. This method intentionally applies
multiple academic disciplines to a lesson and may involve one
teacher or several. When students learn across disciplines, deeper
connections are made.
Our elementary teachers often make use of this strategy. For
example, our first grade students may use information from a
science unit on animals to write a 3-point expository paragraph in
English. Teachers can expand the method even further by working in
conjunction with the computer teacher to create a PowerPoint
presentation about a particular animal.
A recent example from our middle school team involved our 6th grade
students when teachers collaborated to teach a large unit on Rome.
Students learned about ancient Rome in history, read The Bronze Bow
in literature, and performed an informative speech in costume for
language arts. In addition, their history lesson about Mt. Vesuvius
was complemented by a hands-on science lesson on volcanoes.
Paired with other creative methods of instruction, cross-curricular
instruction enhances comprehension and retention, and provides our
teachers and students with a unique opportunity to present and
process what is being taught in multiple disciplines.

using these Expected Student Outcomes
as goals for every student.
During the 2019-2020 school year, 35 of our juniors and seniors
were enrolled in Advanced Placement (AP) courses. These
academically-challenging, college-level classes provide students
with the opportunity to take the AP exam at the end of the school
year. In most cases, students who earn at least a 3 out of 5 on the
exam will be eligible to receive college credit for the
course.
Throughout the year, teachers (who are required to obtain special
credentials to teach AP courses) work hard to prepare their
students for the AP exam in May. In addition to thoroughly covering
the material, teachers work with students to identify and practice
strategies to successfully complete the exam in the time
alloted.
Teachers and students were presented with an extra challenge in
2020 when it became necessary to pivot to online learning for the
fourth quarter. Additionally, the College Board transitioned to
online-only exams, and considerable changes were made to the
format. In response, our teachers sought out webinars and other
resources in an effort to help their students adapt to the
changes.
We are so proud of our FCS students and teachers for adapting to
these unforeseen changes. Our students continue to score well on AP
exams.

her as FCS' Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and

Dr. Lee’s husband, Kevin, is in the financial services industry.
Kevin and Heather have a daughter, Esther, who is in 4th grade.
Kevin's 85 year old mother lives with them as well.
Dr. Lee serves as Assistant Superintendent at FCS with a broad
range of duties. We were very happy that just two weeks before our

him that Dr. Lee had agreed to accept the position here at FCS. He

We are so grateful to have Dr. Lee back on staff at FCS. She has
joined us at a critical time where her wisdom and experience can
help navigate FCS through this unusual school year.
What was your first job?
I loved my first job. I was a cashier at a supermarket near my
home. Growing up in Christian Schools and being very involved in
church, this was my first experience in a secular environment. I
learned a lot and had many chances to develop my faith in practical
ways. And to this day I enjoy scanning groceries for speed and
efficiency!

What years did you work at FCS and what roles did you have?
1995 - 2nd grade teacher at Highway Assembly of God Campus 1999 -
3rd grade teacher at Stafford Campus 2003 - 5th/6th grade teacher
at Stafford Campus 2004 - Instructional Supervisor - all campuses
2010 - left FCS after marrying Kevin and moving to New York 2020 -
returned to FCS as Assistant Superintendent
Where did you obtain your degrees?

What's one memory you have from working with Gary and Andy Foss? I
always smile when I think of Gary and Andy. Their dedication to the
calling God gave them was evident in all they said and did. I still
chuckle at the “green jacket” Gary was famous for wearing, how he
could always be found directing traffic somewhere, and when he
corrected me for walking past litter on campus and taught me about
valuing the amazing gift of property God has given us. It is hard
not to tear up when I recall how Andy poured herself into me as a
young administrator. She always had time for questions, was
generous with her time, and was very “real.” She didn’t pretend to
have all the answers, but knew that God put us here in the roles we
have to talk things through, work together, and do what God leads
us to do.
What excites you about being at FCS?
I think FCS excels in developing relationships at all levels. I am
enjoying the process of building new relationships and re-building
“old” ones in my first few months back at FCS. People here truly
love the Lord, each other, our students, and they have a deep sense
of commitment to our mission. God called me into Christian
Education when he first called me to FCS. I have great joy in being
part of the process of educating students to succeed in every area
of their lives and fulfill the calling God has for them. I pray
they know God deeply, learn what it is to walk with God in every
situation, and find their true identify and purpose through a
personal relationship with Christ.
What does your family enjoy doing together? We love to travel when
we can. Last year, just before COVID, we took a long awaited trip
to Hawaii. In addition to being a celebration of 10 years of
marriage, it was also my 50th state to visit. My parents took us on
driving trips of the country when I was young, so I am blessed to
have seen many different parts of our incredible country.

It has been the goal of the school for many years to establish an
endowment fund. Because of the generosity of our founder, Gary
Foss, FCS was the beneficiary of a legacy life insurance policy,
and that gift was used to establish an endowment in 2019, the FCS
Legacy Endowment Fund. The fund’s value is currently $701,755.97.
It will be used for student scholarships and staff salaries.
An established portion will be used for those purposes, but only
after its value exceeds $1 million. The fund was established by a
resolution of the FCS Board of Directors, who also guides the
associated investment portfolio. If you or someone you know would
like to donate to the FCS Legacy Endowment, please contact Phyllis
Baughman or Rick Yost at the FCS Business Office.
