According to the analysts, the rise in exports is driven mainly by expanding demand in China and other Asian economies, notably South Korea. The first two months of 2010 registered sales for wood exports at just over USD $18 billion and estimates of the following months are in the region of USD $8-9 bil- lion. Exports to China stood at USD $2 bil- lion for the first few months of 2010, an increase of 130 percent compared to the same time period in 2009. Exports to South Korea were reportedly doubled. In other news, a different logging method is being tested by the Indonesian timber industry. ‘Mono-cable’ logging, not typically used in tropical logging operations, has been promoted as an “environmentally friendly” alternative to the traditional crawler tractors. According to the Indonesian timber industry, the mono- cable system is said to cause less damage to the remaining standing trees and less soil disturbance than the heavy tractors commonly used to harvest tropical logs. Britain According to recent published reports, production of British-grown timber is begin- ning to come back. Despite a series of “fairly steep” price increases, British mate- rial is still £20-30/m3 cheaper than import- ed. Data also shows that each time the gap between the two narrows, the imported price rises again, enabling British prices to move forward again. The report said the low stock position aris- ing from the increased demand and the log supply difficulties of the first quarter mean British mills are able to push price rises through without much need to compro- mise, but there is some nervousness that there is only so far that production can be pushed before round wood supply becomes an issue. Guyana Log prices have remained stable in Guyana in recent months. Derived primari- ly from exports to Asia-Pacific markets earnings for rough sawn Select Greenheart were favorable according to sources. Some reached as high as USD $1,140 per cubic meter, while prices for sawn Purpleheart declined slightly and sawn Mora prices remained unchanged. A record high for the year, dressed Greenheart prices moved up to USD $1,414. Prices for rough sawn timber along with those of dressed Purpleheart dropped. Washiba (Ipe) from Guyana con- tinues to be in demand and is attracting price levels of USD $1,200 for rough sawn lumber and USD $1,500 for dressed lum- ber. Plywood prices have also moved up slightly. Both BB/CC and utility qualities of Baromalli have increased and splitwood prices moved positively to attain levels of USD $1,387 per cubic meter in the period under review. Recent data provided by the IHB Fordaq Network suggests that outdoor garden fur- niture, doors and windows continue to be in demand in the Caribbean island markets and exports of these added value products are helping improve export earnings. Malaysia A number of factors have contributed to changes in Malaysian plywood prices, sources say. A recent jump in demand of iron ore in China is said to be the main fac- tor driving up plywood prices. Plywood and Steel products compete in many enduses and plywood has suddenly become more competitive analysts suggest. These fac- tors are expected to affect price structures in other sectors of the Malaysian timber industry as well. According to plywood traders, construc- tion plywood prices could increase by as much as 20 percent in the coming months and eventually this will lift the prices of other wood products. Additionally news that plywood stocks in Japan have been run down and are now being replenished is encouraging the plywood producers in Malaysia and Indonesia. BUSINESS TRENDS (ABROAD) Central/West, Africa Exporters in West Africa recently reported that business with Asian and Indian buyers continues to be brisk. These two markets are apparently interested in mainly logs. However, recent increases in inquiries for sawnwood for the Asian markets seen ear- lier in the year have not translated into firm orders. European interest in West African wood products is reportedly subdued. Price increases for specific species and sizes of both log and lumber secured by exporters in recent weeks are now firmly established. According to analysts, a sustained upward movement in demand will be required before prices move any higher. Reports say the fear of destabilization of the log trade as a result of the decision by Gabon to ban log exports has subsided, helped by the higher volumes being made available by Cameroon following the relax- ation of restrictions on log exports. Congo Brazzaville exporters have also been hard pressed by Asian buyers to maximize log export volumes to make up for the shortfall from Gabon. Gabon’s efforts to transport and ship all logs cut before the impending log ban announcement is running into difficulties. Transportation and hauling of logs to the port is taking longer than expected and dif- ficulties have been reported in handling and loading the logs onto available ves- sels. Sources say logs that are being shipped now are at least four months old, past their best condition by normal trade standards. Ghana In recent months, six special export per- mits were issued solely for Takoradi ship- ments including 67 cubic meters of Okoumé kiln-dried laminated mouldings, 31 cubic meters of Odum kiln-dried deck- ing strips and 90 cubic meters of sliced veneer of various species. These products were shipped by Machined Wood Ltd. and Africa and Auson Veneer (Ghana) Ltd. to their clients in Italy and France. Recent data shows the laminated mould- ings were manufactured from Okoumé sawn timber imported from Gabon while the sliced veneers were imported from Cameroon for re-export. The Ghana Timber Industry grants special permits to sawmillers who intend to ship smaller quantities of some selected wood products to their clients as samples for testing. Despite the fact that such items are not considered to have any commercial value it is mandatory for the exporters to secure free/special permits before shipping. Shipments of timber stumps, wood handi- crafts and woodcarvings were issued export duty free permits. These shipments were also made through the port of Takoradi. The shippers were John Bitar Ltd. and Peewood Craft and Art to buyers in the United Kingdom, the United States and Spain. Sweden The Swedish government is reaching the target for formal protection of forest of high nature conservation value. State-owned company, Sveaskog is setting aside 80,000 hectares of land for use in long- term protection of valuable nature owned by private landowners and companies. The cornerstone of the Alliance government’s policy, biodiversity has given priority to pro- tection of valuable nature. According to the IHB Fordaq Network, priority has been given to the interim target of long-term pro- tection of valuable forests, which comes under the environmental quality objective Sustainable Forests. The policy specifies that 900,000 hectares of productive forestland of high nature con- servation value is to be exempted from forestry by the end of 2010. Out of this number, 500,000 hectares are to be set aside by forest owners and 400,000 hectares by various forms of long-term state protection, such as nature reserves, biotope protection and nature conservation agreements. Increased appropriations for work on bio- diversity from SEK 6 billion to SEK 7.5 bil- lion under the Alliance have been put into place by the government. Increased dia- logue and participation in voluntary protec- tion schemes have been developed as supplementary methods. The Swedish Environmental Protection

Analysts of the Indonesian Governmentrecently reported that the country’s woodproduct exports are likely to increase thisyear. In related news Sveaskog’s profits recent-ly grew by 24 percent to SKr924m. A com-pany spokesperson said this was achieveddespite a 17 percent net sales decreaseequivalent to SKr1.2bn. Reduction in oper-ating expenses through an efficiencyimprovement program is said to be theprincipal reason for the improved earnings.

The Chilean forest products industry isrecovering gradually from its recent earth-quake that stopped production at dozensof lumber and panel plants.At press time, six of Arauco’s sawmillshave resumed production. Two of Araco’sfour plywood lines have also resumed pro-duction along with an MDF line.Activity has also returned to the ports thatsuffered significant damage. Despite theprogress, most estimates indicate a returnto a normal flow of exports is at leastweeks, if not months away, according toreports. A repair timeline for heavily dam-aged roads and bridges is uncertain.The homes of hundreds of industry work-ers were destroyed or damaged in thequake. Along with other logistical problemsthis has impeded industry efforts to resumenormal operations.USD markets for Pine and MDF finishedfinger joint mouldings, blanks and sandedplywood were impacted by the disruptionof Chilean imports. Prices of Radiata andTaeda Pine blanks increased from $1,035and $1,005, to $1,260 and $1,190.

Germany

German exports of Beech logs are on therise according to recent activity data. In thefirst quarter of 2010, 69,270 cubic meterswere exported, 9.5 percent more com-pared to the same time period a year earli-er. Export value dropped by 15.6 percent.The calculated price over all destinationsdeduced from the statistics, was €92 percubic meter, improved marginally to €98per cubic meter in recent months. Strongmarkdowns for deliveries to China, 49.6percent to €105 per cbm were reported byThe German Federal Statistical Office.Deliveries to Japan were down 22.5 per-cent at €118 per cbm; Vietnam, 21.3 per-cent to €118 per cbm; Italy down 40 per-cent to €75 per cbm; and India at 65.7 per-cent to €73 per cbm.

The spring break-up caused little disrup-tion to hardwood supplies in the provincethis year. There were no significant weath-er events to prolong the ground thawprocess, as have occurred in the past.Reports identified adequate log decks atmost large mill operations to sustain theiroperations throughout the spring and earlysummer. Other mills with marginal log sup-plies were able to muddle through withoutlosing much production time. Buyers wereprepared for the usual drop in green lum-ber receipts during this transitional periodfor logging. There were few significantdeclines in incoming green lumber, withnone being attributed to shortfalls solely tospring break-up. With mild end of winterconditions green lumber output has onlymarginally met the market’s needs; thisstrongly indicates mill operations inCanada, overall, are still contracted. Market interest in Ash production is

described as solid. The strain on suppliesis keeping pressure on prices in upwardmovement.Supplies for Basswood are tight, and thereare spot shortages of specific items. Pricesare firm to moderately higher in recentactivity.It is evident that the quantities of HardMaple lumber and dimension productsheading overseas are much less thanthose consumed by the U.S. market whenconstruction was at peak. However, exportvolumes are up. Alternative appearancespecies from other parts of the world arenot readily available. Exports coupled withongoing domestic activity are enough tomake a difference to Hard Maple business,with prices ranging from firm to slightlyhigher in mid- to late-spring. Like Hard Maple, Soft Maple volume mov-ing in markets is low by historic standards.Demand is, however, closely matched withdeveloping production, thus keeping sup-plies tight for most items and causingoccasional shortages in certain areas.Buyers are concerned by the speed andamount prices have increased which couldeasily decline rapidly should supplies meetor exceed demand. The risk applies toeveryone purchasing timber, logs and lum-ber. Everyone is being cautious; purchas-ing is part of every business function, withtiming often being the most critical compo-nent for purchasing and selling.A new study from the Forest ProductsSector Council (FPSC-CSPF) entitledChallenges and Impacts: Labour MarketTransition Programs for Laid-Off ForestProducts Workers in Canada, highlightsthe challenges laid-off forest workers facein forest-dependent communities acrossCanada. The report is an important firststep in recognizing the impact of the crisisand in focussing actions to assist transi-tioning forestry workers. In the last fiveyears the Canadian forest products sectorfaced unprecedented challenges due todeclining demand for wood and paperproducts, global competition and therecession. The report notes that in the past fiveyears, approximately 100,000 jobs werelost and while many have moved on toother employment or retirement, nearly40,000 remain unemployed. How thematter will be dealt with collectively will

affect the health of the industry, worker andcommunities in years to come.Governments, at all levels, have devel-oped a range of labour market programsand initiatives in response to the economicslowdown. The recent Speech from theThrone and Budget 2010 contain severalmeasures – including an expansion ofWork Sharing programs, the CareerTransition Assistance Initiative and theextension of Employment Insurance bene-fit periods – that expand the reach of pro-gramming available to employers, unionsand laid-off workers.The research suggests that workers,unions and employers are often not awareof the extent of the programming that maybe available. The Council will be examiningoptions to respond to this challenge and toimprove on the situation. FPSC-CSPF willbe looking for ways to provide informationand insight to help laid-off forest workersand employers deal more effectively withlayoffs.While the difficulties of the last few yearshave been significant, the sector is lookingforward to a more promising future.Demand for traditional Canadian lumberand forest products will improve, con-cludes the study.

QUEBEC TRENDS

According to some lumber producers,lumber prices recently surged to their high-est levels in three years, buoyed by tightsupply and better demand. Industry execu-tives project that wood will enjoy a boomas experienced by other commodities suchas oil, copper and coal, for certain parts ofthe country.This spring, the benchmark futures forlumber spiked to $315 (U.S.) on theChicago Mercantile Exchange, the highestin nearly three years. The advance,sparked by an improvement in the low sta-tistics on the number of new-housing in theU.S., reveals that lumber has risen almost30 percent this year, among the best of anycommodity. The steady gains have beenmade on the basis of extremely tight sup-

plies, with lumber yards at many dealersnear empty and the amount of new productcoming out of the forests down from a yearago.Despite the slight improvement, other con-tacts are maintaining a controlledapproach to purchasing. They are continu-ing their cautious optimism with regards tothe improvements in the forestry sector.According to CMHC’s First Quarter 2010Housing Market Outlook, housing startswill rise to 171,250 units in 2010 and to175,150 units in 2011. A spillover ofdemand from the resale to the new homemarket will be a key factor this year. MLSresales will be about 486,700 units for2010, up from 464,730 units in 2009. As faras 2011 is concerned, there will be approx-imately 469,950 units sold. As new listingscatch up to sales and more balanced mar-ket conditions return, the average MLSprice is expected to edge lower reaching$339,126 by the fourth quarter of 2010. Amodest increase in prices is forecasted for2011.New home construction in Ontario movedlower to 50,370 units in 2009. However,2010 will see a strong improvement to60,700 units as the economy recoversfrom last year’s downturn. Both single andmultiple starts will be a factor in the overallimprovement in 2010 and later in 2011.As 2010 progresses, nearly all provinceswill experience growth in starts, withWestern Canada leading the way.Measures recently announced for govern-ment-backed mortgage insurance willmoderate housing starts activity. Buyerswill have to save for a larger down pay-ment to offset higher qualifying mortgagerates. Some may buy smaller, less expen-sive, new homes. Other buyers who investin new rental housing of up to four units willalso have to save larger down payments.These measures are only a few of themany factors that will affect the new hous-ing market.There are other risks to the outlookbesides the economic uncertainty. On thedownside, should the U.S. economy recov-ery be slower than expected, it could resultin higher unemployment in Canada. Inaddition there could be rising mortgagerates. These factors could lead to lowerhousing demand. On the upside, if condi-tions continue to improve in financial mar-kets, it could lead to lower risk premiums,which could keep mortgage rates lowerthan expected. The result would be astronger demand for housing. Strongerthan expected economic response to fiscaland monetary stimulus packages couldalso boost employment growth and lead tostronger housing demand. There are several key factors that couldaffect residential construction. Mortgagerates: which are expected to gradually riseover 2010 and 2011, but will remain verylow in a historical context. Employment:2010 should see economic conditionsimprove — this will help employment turnback up in 2010 and 2011. In 2010 and2011 income growth will strengthen, in linewith economic activity. The low birth rate isthe major factor in the slowing of growth inthe natural population (births minusdeaths). This will lessen the demand foradditional housing stock in the mediumand longer term. Sales on the existinghome market rebounded in 2009, whichcaused markets to move from buyers’ tosellers’ conditions. The limited number ofnew listings has led demand to spill overinto the new home market. Increased com-petition from the condo market and modestrental construction will be partly offset bystrong rental demand due to high immigra-tion. As a result, vacancy rates acrossCanada’s metropolitan centres will remainrelatively stable this year and next. Themeasures announced for government-backed insurance will moderate housingactivity. A recovering economy, favourable borrow-ing conditions and strong migratory flowswill fuel Quebec’s housing markets thisyear and next. Sales of existing homes willstay above the 80,000 mark this year andmore than 43,000 new homes will be start-ed in the province.In the latter stages of 2009, the impact ofimproving global and national economicenvironments was apparent in Quebec’seconomy. Both household spending andprivate investment started to grow again,while exports reacted positively toincreased global demand. Whereas ashare of the growth in 2010 will stem from

various fiscal measures, 2011 will see theprivate sector contributing to provincialgrowth. The Quebec economy is forecasted togrow by just over 2.1 percent in 2010 andby 3.0 percent in 2011. A variety of demographic factors will alsosustain the province’s housing markets inthe coming years. Growing net migration tothe province will continue to have a posi-tive impact on the rental and resale mar-kets. In addition, population aging and therecently higher birth rate will likely prompthouseholds to adjust their housing needs.Starts of single detached homes will ben-efit from the improved economic and finan-cial environment and from the reducedsupply on the resale market. A portion ofthe rising demand will be towards cheaperalternatives such as existing homes, semi-detached houses and town homes. About18,350 single detached starts are expect-ed in 2010 and 17,350 in 2011. In other news, logging in environmentally

sensitive areas has been restricted as partof an agreement with environmentalgroups. Representing about 75 percent ofCanada’s woodlands including forests inseven of the ten provinces, logging hasbeen temporarily suspended in theCanadian Boreal Forest. Consisting ofmostly Spruce, Fir and Pine trees andsome Maple, Birch and Oak trees, theboreal forest is home to approximately140,000 species of plants, animals andmicroorganisms. Twenty-one members ofthe forestry organization recently agreed tosuspend logging in the region for threeyears so a plan can be developed to pre-serve the woodlands. The exchange from environmentalists is a

pledge to suspend international “Do NotBuy” anti-logging campaigns againstCanadian lumber. “This agreement is alight of hope for a battered industry,” saidDave Coles, president of theCommunications, Energy and Paper work-ers Union. “It is time now to make environ-mental leadership a value-added advan-tage for Canadian forest products.”

LAKE STATES

Market conditions in the Lake States aremixed. Some hardwood lumber suppliersin the region report improved sales activityby as much as 25 percent. Others fearsupply shortage will result in an over sup-ply for the months ahead. “Comparing last year’s first quarter to thisyear’s, we’re up considerably over the pastyear,” a contact in Michigan remarked.“Business has been steady as well. Wewere averaging around 12 to 14 loads aweek of lumber last year at this time andwe’ve been right around 20 to 21 loads thisquarter.”When asked about the factors involved inthe improved market conditions, the hard-wood supplier said, “Prices are better andof course Grade lumber has gone up quitea bit and that has been a great help to us.We cut quite a bit of Red Oak, so that’sbeen really good for us.”He went on to say that supply shortageswere at least, to some extent, part of thereason for the sales improvement. “Forone thing, the pipeline has been empty. Ithas been a long lull here, and a deep val-ley, and I think that we’re going to slowlykeep climbing out of it. I don’t think it’sentirely supply related. I believe we aregoing to see some steady improvement. Itmay not be great gains, but from looking atmy records here of what we’re doing I seea steady firmness of the industrial end ofthe market as well as the green end.”Supplying mostly Red Oak, Hard and SoftMaple, Beech, Aspen and Cherry, thesource said Red Oak and Hard and SoftMaple are the two best moving species.“We’re gaining a lot of interest fromCanada for No. 3 and better grade RedOak. They’re also looking around forAspen and industrial lumber too so thathelps us with our industrial lumberbecause we do sell quite a bit of Aspen,”he explained.As for log supply he commented, “The logsituation is pretty good here. However, alot of those around us are having supplyissues.” He did mention that if his produc-tion increased, supply could become aproblem. “We cut about 200 cords a day ina shift and we keep about 4,000 cords inthe yard. We have two mills and right nowwe run our large mill every other week and

the previous six months. “This is strictly asupply-driven market. A lot of manufactur-ers have gone out of business and sincethen there has been a lot of pressure onthe manufacturers that remain,” heexplained.Supplying Red and White Oak, Hard andSoft Maple, Cherry and Ash, the contactsaid Red Oak and Ash are moving well.When asked about items that are hard tofind, he said, “I’m not really having troublefinding the product, but I have trouble pay-ing the prices that are on it.”Compared to the previous three months,the contact said his inventory levels aredown 20 to 30 percent. He also mentionedthat he did not anticipate any improvementin inventory in the coming three months.As for transportation issues the hardwoodsupplier stated, “Fuel prices are going upand freight costs will follow. Shipping avail-ability is very tight and difficult right nowand that includes both trucks and contain-ers.”The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)certified supplier said with supplies beingtight and people in need of the product, hebelieves demand for certified Hardwoodshas been “put on the back burner.”The contact said according to his manu-facturing and distribution customers busi-ness is still off. “On the manufacturing endof things, they’re having a difficult time find-ing the product. New customer calls andinquiries are up 20 to 30 percent. The rea-son for that is customers that were notdealing with us in the past are now havingdifficulty locating the product they need, sothey’ve expanded their resource network.“Funding is probably one of our biggestissues right now,” he continued. “Inaccounts receivable what was a discountof 10 days went to a customer of 30 daysand the 30 day customers are now 60days. So money is very tight still. I think alot of people are using other people’smoney to sustain their business right now.”In the next six months the contact expectsmore closures. “I think we’ll see more clo-sures. Availability of product will probablyloosen up but I don’t think we’re out of thewoods yet. I still think we have at leastanother year before we start seeing light atthe end of the tunnel,” he concluded.Another hardwood supplier source in theNortheast said sales activity is up by 30percent. “We’re still in an under supply sit-uation and I think that’s something that hasbeen persistent from six months ago.When we started seeing a supply shortagesix months ago, I think everyone thoughtthat would rectify itself fairly quickly andhere we are six or seven months into theshortage and it’s getting worse,” heexplained.The Hard and Soft Maple, Red and WhiteOak, Hickory, and Basswood supplier saidRed and White Oak and Ash are movingextremely well in all grades. “All thespecies we carry are basically moving realwell except for upper grade Hard Mapleand Cherry. The market is strong for every-thing else right now.”As for his particular area, the source saidhe hasn’t been affected by the supplyshortages. “We’ve been fortunate here innorth central Pennsylvania as we’ve hadideal logging situations all year long. Wehad less snow this past winter than normal.It all seemed to stay south of us. On theother hand our issue is we’re trying tolower our log inventory going into the hot-ter temperatures. We have a very stronglog deck so as far as our raw material,things are going extremely well right now.”In other news, according to a recent reportfrom Smith Leonard and accounting andconsultant firm, regional existing homesales in the Northeast rose 2.4 percent toan annual pace of 840,000 in recentmonths and are 12 percent above a yearago. The median price in the Northeastwas $254,700, up 7.5 percent from thesame time period last year. The National Association of Realtors(NAR) reported that these modest gainsare offset by softer sales in the South aswell as the West. NAR’s chief economist,Lawrence Yun noted, “Although sales havebeen higher than year-ago levels for eightstraight months and home prices are muchmore stable compared to the past fewyears, the housing recovery is fragile at themoment.” Total housing inventory rose 9.5percent to 3.59 million existing homesavailable for sale, which represents an 8.6-month supply at the current sales pace, upfrom a 7.8-months supply in the previousmonth. NAR also reported that raw unsoldinventory is 5.5 percent below a year ago.

We are about ready tostep up production but we’re a bit hesitantto do that just yet because it will require hir-ing a few more people.”He also said his hardwood log prices wereup. “It’s getting kind of stiff. Stumpageprices are steadily increasing. Peoplearound us are paying prices that if some-one had told me last year they were bid-ding that on a timber sale I wouldn’t havebelieved them. I think people are lookingahead a year or so and looking for goodthings to come.”The hardwood supplier said he is havingdifficulty with transportation. “We’re havinga hard time finding enough trucks to haulour stuff. We own a couple of trucks herebut we don’t haul all of our lumber, we con-tract a lot out of state. We’re strong in theToledo, Ohio, area and northern Indianaand it’s tough getting trucks. It’s reallytough getting trucks to go to Wisconsinright now. I’ve upped my surcharges a fewtimes but I can’t take them up anymore. Ijust don’t think the equipment is out thereright now, but it will be. It always happensjust like a sawmill—prices go up, we openup the barn doors and fire it up again, andit’s the same thing with the trucks. Thereare a lot of trucks that are sitting on theside of the road, not being used right nowand they’re going to get back on the road.A lot of fleets have trucks just sitting rightnow, so there is room, it’s just a matter ofgetting drivers and putting them back onthe highway.” Marketing mostly to wholesalers and dis-tributors the source said his customers’markets are picking up. “Of course we’velost Wolf River Lumber and we used toship them a lot of lumber, but the smallerguys are picking up the slack,” he said.Going forward the contact said he looksfor slow but steady improvements. “Theattitude from everyone around us is posi-tive and upbeat. We’re looking for 2010 togain modest improvements overall.”A hardwood supplier in Ohio said, “Themarket is extremely volatile right now dueto supply shortages and prices are goingup daily.” He attributed the cause of theshortages to seasonal issues and adecrease in production over the last 18months.A supplier of all Appalachian hardwoods,the source said that Red and White Oak,Ash and Walnut were very difficult to findright now. “Compared to 90 days ago ourinventory levels are drastically lower andprices are up. We’re not getting involved inthe auctioning off of logs that’s going onright now to a great extent because wedon’t believe the prices we’re getting rightnow are going to hold long.”Marketing hardwood lumber domesticallyand overseas, the supplier said he is expe-riencing transportation issues. “Oceanfreight is going up on a regular basis andthe shortage of containers is a terribleproblem. Finding space on what containersare available is also a terrible problem. Theuncertainty in the marketplace is what con-cerns me the most. We don’t know howmuch of what’s going on in the market-place right now is generated because oflack of supply and how much is being gen-erated due to increased demand.“We also have a dimension shop andwe’re not that busy; all of my customersare not that busy but every wholesaler outthere is calling looking for lumber rightnow. Where is it all going? It’s a precariousmarket right now, all it would take would befor a few sawmills to start double shiftingagain because prices are up and we’ll beoversupplied again in a heartbeat,” hesaid.Looking at the months ahead the sourcesaid, “I think the demand for lumber maygo up a little bit, but not nearly as much asthe supply will go up over the next sixmonths. So I anticipate an over supplythroughout the next six months and I hopeI’m wrong.”

According to sources in the Southeastregion, the hardwood lumber market, whileimproving, is mostly driven by supply short-ages. A hardwood supplier in Georgiaattributes the shortages to sawmill clo-sures. “We are getting a lot of phone activ-ity but it is mainly due to the closures thathave happened all around us,” heexplained.The contact added that while market con-

ditions are improving, the demand side isnot factoring into the equation yet. “Ibelieve log supply and the availability oflumber has affected the market. I also thinkthe Chinese component as far as the floor-ing has pulled some kiln-dried No. 2Common lumber off the market that wewould normally have access to. I don’tthink we’ve seen any true demand justyet,” he said.Handling Red and White Oak and Poplar,

he said Red and White Oak is moving bet-ter. However he did note, “We are heavierto the Oaks than Poplar by the percentageof what we cut so that has a lot to do withwhat we sell.”As for supply issues the source said kiln-

dried No. 2 Common Red Oak has been inshort supply. He also said that his invento-ry levels have improved. “I would say thatour inventory levels are much better on ourgreen yard.”Transportation is an issue that concerns

this hardwood supplier as he mentioned ashortage of trucks. “We’re moving into thefruit and vegetable produce season and wecan see it on the supply side withincreased freight rates and availability oftrucks.”The contact, which also operates a floor-

ing plant, markets products to mouldingand millwork manufacturers as well asflooring distributors. He said his customers’markets are moving and in short supply.“My customers are moving; they needmore supply too. I believe a lot of theirproduct is ending up in the foreclosuremarket. We couldn’t figure out where allthe unfinished flooring was going at first. Alot of people are taking advantage of fore-closed houses and installing new flooring,”he explained.For the coming six months the source

said, “If we have some good weather logsupply will increase. We believe that priceswill stabilize, especially on the green side.If we overwhelm the supply then they willgo down. Historically this industry hastaken what a water hose will cover and puta firehouse on it. We hope that over supplydoesn’t kill what little market that is therethis time.”A Mississippi hardwood supplier said

sales activity had increased marginally, butinquiries are plentiful. “We’re at that time ofyear where we usually get booming,” heexplained. “People are still a little cautiousright now, they want to spend the money—but they want to get the best price possibleand it seems the attitude is quantity overquality.”The Hard and Soft Maple, Red and White

Oak and Poplar supplier said he hasn’texperienced a log supply shortage unlikeothers around him. “We don’t buy a lot ofgate wood, we have our own timber tracts,”he explained. He did note that the unusualamount of winter weather in the Southeasthindered logging. “We received more snowover the winter than we have seen in atleast five years. It made logging conditionsvery difficult, but we’re beginning to catchup now.”Marketing to distributors, cabinet and

architectural moulding and millwork manu-facturers, the source mentioned that hisclients say business is just starting to pickup. “Some of the cabinet people are start-ing to keep an order file like they used toand most of the distributors are beginningto pick back up,” he said.As for the next six months, the contact

believes conditions will continue toimprove; however he expects no majorincrease until 2011. “I think we will contin-ue to see some gradual improvement.Those improvements will be spottythough,” he explained. The Associated General Contractors

Virginia division recently released ananalysis on construction spending thatsuggests new construction in theSoutheast is declining further. The analysisshowed a decline in most categories of pri-vate residential and nonresidential con-struction, as well as public construction.

“Most of the economy seems to beimproving, but construction is falling into aneven deeper hole,” the associations chiefeconomist Ken Simonson noted. “Badweather may account for a small part of thedownturn, but most of the contractionreflects ongoing lack of demand, tight cred-it conditions and shrinking state and localbudgets.”Simonson said that new single-family con-

struction spending remained essentiallyflat, dipping by 0.1 percent. Existing single-and multi-family construction improve-ments were down 4.3 percent for themonth but 4.3 percent higher than a yearearlier, he said. “These numbers suggestthat single-family construction will reboundin 2010, even as multi-family continues tosink.”

WEST COAST

On the West Coast, hardwood lumbersuppliers are buzzing about considerableimprovements in business activity.According to some, fear of over supply dueto current shortages remains in the fore-front and transportation availability isbecoming a larger concern.A source in California who offers mostdomestic species but primarily Red andWhite Oak, said pricing continues toincrease. “We’ve been paying more forRed and White Oak logs; we’re definitelyseeing that trend over the last six months.I would say everything else has slightlyrisen but nothing of concern. The mainspecies that has substantial jumps in pric-ing is Red and White Oak,” he explained.“One of the issues that has been well doc-umented is available space onsteamships,” continued the supplier.“We’re exporting into China and it’sincreasingly difficult to get bookings. You’relooking at 4 to 6 weeks to get a bookingright now. We have some sawing comingup for items that have orders out to beshipped and the earliest I can get them ona vessel is a month out. If that pattern per-sists, which it probably will, I’ll still be play-ing catch up trying to get orders shippedout that I sawed probably 60 days prior,just trying to get it on a ship.”He also mentioned an increase in salesactivity of about 25 percent. “Orders arecoming in and business is steady.”Seasonal activity, along with supply short-ages warrant the increase, he said. “Thesupply shortage is largely responsible forthe improvement but there is some sea-sonal demand in there as well.”When asked about the months to come,the Hardwood supplier said, “We’reexpecting an overall improvement of about30 percent from 2009 if we remain steady.The biggest concern though, is that thesupply shortages will result in over supplyon the market. Speaking for our operation,we are being very cautious about whatwe’re producing,” he said. “We’re keepinga tight ship and paying a lot of attention tothe numbers right now, in an effort not tocontribute to an oversupply. We hopeeveryone else is going in the same direc-tion.”An Oregon hardwood supplier noted thatwhile business conditions have improved,transportation issues have caused a “kink”in possible increased sales. “Our regularcustomers are filing out orders about amonth ahead and we’ve had several newinquiries,” he said. “Trucking availability isreally slowing us down right now. We can’tget the product shipped out in the timeframe the customer requires and in somecases we lose the order.”As for log supply the contact said, “It’s def-initely tightening up, but we were able tokeep our inventory levels at above averageduring the winter, so we’re not feeling it yet.If the transportation issues loosen up, andwe can move what we’ve got, I’m sure theshortages will catch up to us.”The source, which markets to wholesalersand distributors, said his customers’ mar-kets are improving as well. “Most of themare seeing decent increases and the atti-tude is very positive. No one in this indus-try is looking for ‘leaps and bounds’ in2010, but we expect it to be better than2009 overall by about 20 to 25 percent.”In hardwood flooring news a publishingcompany based in California, NationalFlooring Trends (NFT), recently reportedincreased sales in both the residential andcommercial segments of the wood catego-ry. The data, acquired from participants inthe 2010 NFT Hardwood Market Study,reported 53 percent of respondents expectresidential sales to increase in 2010 andcommercial sales are expected to remain

•CC hh ii ll ee ——Experts are suggesting the recov-ery from Chile’s recent earthquake, at leastfor their forest products industry, won’t takelong. “I believe the world will be surprised athow quickly Chileans tackle the clean-upand rebuilding of their country,” Bob Flynn,director of RISI’sinternational tim-ber said. “I’vebeen followingChile’s forestindustry for 20years now, andif there is oneword that sum-marizes theC h i l e a nforesters andforest industryexecutives Ihave known, it is“competent.”Flynn went on to say there was muchspeculation among wood chip exporters ata recent conference as to how much of animpact the earthquake would have on theinternational chip markets in 2010. “Youhave to understand that Chile was the sec-ond largest supplier of hardwood chips tothe international markets in 2009, and wasthe leading supplier of plantation-grownhardwood chips,” he said.“The epicenter of the earthquake was justwest of the city of Talca, in Region VII, andthe two closest woodchip loading ports, atSan Vicente and Coronel, were rumored tobe seriously damaged.” In 2009, 41 percentof Chile’s hardwood chip exports wereloaded in Coronel and 13 percent in SanVicente. Imports also rose, reaching 66percent (US $25 billion) from the same timeperiod a year ago. Considerable foreign investments havebeen attracted by the rapidly growing econ-omy, along with other positive economicfundamentals, which has taken IndianRupee to a 19-month high against the U.S.dollar. The research determined that further stud-ies on plantation grown Paricá are neededto determine the properties of timber fromtrees harvested at various ages. During the years2006 through 2009 the market was worthjust over R$ 4 billion and continues toexpand. The State Secretary ofEnvironment (SEMA) said exports fromthose years were valued at approximatelyR$ 1.4 billion.The SEMA reported Sinop traded a total ofR$ 933.4 million over the time period. Over70 percent of this trade was destined forthe domestic market, and the balance wasexported. Trading at about R$ 569 million,Aripuanã came in at R$ 340 million on thelocal market with the remainder going toexport. In nearly four years Juina tradedR$ 444.8 million. Opposite from the tradeof Sinop and Aripuanã, the bulk of thetrade in Juina was to international markets(R$ 227.2 million). Less than half of thetrade was in domestic markets.According to recent reports from forestsector analysts, the wood product manu-facturing sector is underperforming andcertain sectors of the industry would bene-fit from government trade incentives.Statistics indicate that output in the timersector is gradually recovering from theeffects of the global financial crisis.However, the Paraná Industry Federation(FIEP) pointed out that not all industry sec-tors are recovering at the same pace.As a consequence of the global marketcollapse, the solid wood industries havesuffered steep declines in sales. Relyingheavily on demand from the NorthAmerican housing market, the timberindustry exported a quarter of its produc-tion. In spite of the gloomy picture, thereare signs of recovery in the manufacturingsector and more companies have movedinto the Telemaco Borba Industrial District,according to the Jaguariaíva TimberIndustry Association.

•MM aa ll aa yy ss ii aa ——The Malaysian TimberCouncil (MTC) announced its plans to cre-ate a “timber hub” with the GlobalWoodMart in Kuala Lumpur in October.MTC chief executive officer Cheah KamHuan said the trade exhibition is aimed atthe global timber industry and would coversoftwoods, and temperate and tropicalhardwoods from the raw material throughto finished products.Global suppliers including The AmericanHardwood Export Council will exhibit, andvisits to factories and forests can bearranged. “It is an opportunity to meet sup-pliers from around the world in one place,”Kam Huan said. He graduat-ed from Central High School inChattanooga and attended University ofTennessee at Chattanooga. Keith is preceded in death by his parents,Clarence M. Keith and Sarah Brown Keithand his sister, Njoni Robin Keith. He is sur-vived by his wife of 47 years, GayleForester Keith; daughter, Kim Keith (Watts)Holt and her children, Michael, Jacob andJordan Watts; son-in-law Keith Holt and hischildren, Tyler and Erin Holt; daughter-in-law, Liza M. Keith of Kingsport, Tenn., andher children, Kristina and Bryan Keith; sis-ter, Ede White of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; sis-ters and brothers-in-law, Henry and DixieSaeger of Chattanooga and James andJoy Leport of Memphis; also severalnieces and nephews.Keith began his adult working life as anews reporter and columnist for TheChattanooga News-Free Press and TheChattanooga Times. In 2001 he opened Keith Hardwoods,Inc., a hardwood lumber brokerage firm,which closed in 2009. He was a foundingpartner in The K Group, LLC, and co-owner of Roanoke Rehabilitation &Wellness, Inc.Throughout his life, Keith was activelyinvolved in sports, both as a participantand a spectator. He coached Dixie Youthand Little League baseball and recreation-al league football for boys. He played highschool football and earned a scholarship toUniversity of Tennessee at Martin. Keith was a member of the ManagementTeam for Journey Church. He was a pastmember of a local Kiwanis Club where heheld the office of president for two terms.Keith was a member of the AppalachianLumberman’s Club and Hidden ValleyCountry Club.
