Ed’s note…WHEN WE LAUNCHED THE BUSINESS JOURNEY MAGAZINE IN 2015 WE DIDN’T REALLY KNOW EXACTLY WHERE IT WOULD LEAD, BUT WE DID KNOW THAT IT WAS THE RIGHT THING TO DO FOR SMME’s.

We are taking a look at our goals from 2015 to 2018, our focuses on sustainable businesses. We have a SMME’s business model based on long- term relationships and a responsibility to influence change along our business journey. Today, more than ever, entrepreneurship continues to be in the spotlight in terms of both its direct and especially, economic impact.

In South Africa key developmental challenges include the need to alleviate poverty, reduce inequality and create jobs, to improve education and grow the number of skilled people ready to join the job market, while labor unrest and concerns about corruption continue.

These social challenges are overlaid with some significant environmental pressure including water scarcity, energy supply stability and a host of business concerns including security of land tenure, rising input costs, soil quality and access to markets – all of which affect food security and prices, creating a complex Kaleidoscope of challenges. The National Development Plan (NDP) and the Sustainable Development Goals create a strong vision for resolving many of these. Our Business journey’ aim is to understand our influence and apply a value chain approach to finding solutions and creating shared value in partnership with our stakeholders in working towards the NDP and the SDGs.

NOW...

Entrepreneurial activity is an important indicator of the future of SMMEs, since the small business owners of tomorrow are today’s entrepreneurs.South Africa’s business environment is not all bad news, the story we are featuring identified the chief impediments to growth as: lack of skilled staff, burdensome regulations, local economic conditions, lack of finance, and cost of labour.

So are entrepreneurship working in communities, what is the comditions our goverment is creating for entrepreneurs to grow in? And is funding all the goverment various departments like SEDA, NYDA, DEDAT and others making the diference?Help is urgently need to see small business grow...Today were feature a snapshot of businesses in our community to showcase the value there is in assisting people to start a business...

I have managed the bakery with support from a lot of people and will do so for many years to come. Both my family and I are very proud to have served the community for some years, and are very thankful for

the continued support from the community.

Due to the product being top quality, it markets itself; best marketing for AMK bakeries is word of mouth.

There are very little social media campaigns on facebook and Whatsapp and online traffic. Print media don’t really work yet.

Bakery would like people to buy next year online, get branding for business car.

Planning for going forward will be easy especially where production flow is concern, key dates is on the diary for next year and due to the big holidays coming, plans to add a few ranges is going very well

Social media plays a huge role in my business, 70% of my clientele base is from facebook. So it’s crucial that I keep my audience captivated and con-stantly exceeding their expectations visually and through the references of my guests.

Through social media I have had 23 appearances on the Expresso show SABC 3. Considering I launched my business 22 April 2018, the magnitude of my success is phenomenal. I am truly blessed, I have also been featured on many blogs and vlogs and I’m currently going start filming my own cooking show.

I have worked with several top chefs throughout my career, like Heinrich Koen and Sanel Esterhyse. My mother is by far my biggest cooking influ-ence. As a child at 9 years old, I used to watch her cook and took a keen interest.

Through the years I continued cooking, constantly creating and experi-menting with food. When I was 16, after my job shadowing at the Cape Sun, I knew that I would be a chef. My biggest food influence was my mentor Chef Marcus Ree Taylor, my former Head Chef at the Towers Club fine dining restaurant on the 19th floor of the Western Hotel in Cape Town. He taught me attention to detail, finesse and crucial techniques my cooking arsenal was lack-ing. Marcus along with a passionate brigade of chefs made me realise my poten-tial and took my passion for cooking and food to higher calibre. iceseq uisimin ul-

Keanon’s Kitchen is a private chef/catering business, we specialize in everything & anything food related. The variety of culinary experiences is en-tirely up to you as a client. You can choose from a 3 course fine dining dinner with friends or family to a picnic, fine braaing, can-apes , weddings, butler service food and wine pairings etc.

Anyone who is into good food, people who are will-

ing to try true local cuisine from a local chef . Keanon’s Kitchen focal point is to bring the restaurant experience to the comfort of your home. We want anyone to be able to afford a high culinary experience, to prove that fine dining is not only for the wealthy.

After 18 years of learning, working and travelling the globe , I was tired of working for others. For the bulk of my career I was never credited for my work or my culinary creations as I was not ‘head chef ”’. This factor along with others motivated me to start my own business. I also wanted to showcase my full potential and creativity based on my travels and places I have worked. I knew that I would never obtain my full potential and be the chef I was destined to be working in the shadow of another chef.

Definitely visual impact, getting my food photographed by a local talented photographer has got peoples attention. It’s a simple concept yet so effective we eat with our eyes first, If it looks good it tastes good.

Young aspiring chefs should be passion driven about food and cooking, with this love, it sets the foundation for everything else. Learning is essential; it sets apart a cook from a chef. Con-stantly learning and improving your skill set makes you indispensable and sets you apart everyone else in the kitchen. Hard work pays off, pay your dues, humble yourself and take whatever the industry and chefs throw at you. This, in time, will shape you into an amazing chef and a force to be reckoned with.

I do all events involving food, I’m by no means limited to just 3 course dinners with wine pairings. Whether it’s a wedding, buffet, sushi, canapes, butler style service, tapas, braais, etc. I can do them all.

I have recently launched my new food concepts namely ‘”fine braaing”” and “indigenous picnics” just in time of the summer season ahead. Fine braaing is my experience and passion for attention to details meets the big bold smoky braai flavours and textures.

The key point to fine braaing is that each element of each course starter, main and dessert is kissed or touched my the fire of the coals. The Indig-enous picnics started when I realised that there is so much I don’t know about indigenous foods and people.

Thankfully I know someone who has a wealth of knowledge regarding both.

While being educated on indigenous plants during a scenic hike, I prepare an 3 course meal using local indigenous ingredients and flavours.

One of the newest trends in food today is charcoal, using charcoal in both sweet and savoury dishes. I tend not to follow trends , I try as far as possible to focus on food that I enjoy cooking and eating.

The importance that visual impact simply just is’nt enough anymore, chefs aspire to capture all your senses with culinary delights.

No more is food restricted just to smell and taste, now chefs create a “theatre’” capturing all your senses this is modern dining at its highest level.

With the ideas and concepts that chefs around the globe have created the state of modern cuisine is ever changing.

My travels to Asia were a lifetime dream. Thailand, China and Korea influenced my flavours and combinations; I love the freshness and heat of Asian cuisine.

I am extremely proud of local Cape/South African dishes, flavours and textures.

My favourite ingredients include Rooibos, cumin, beetroot, citrus, chilli and spices. My style of food is draped in elegance with a punch of flavour, using fresh local ingredients in a unique way. Constantly exceeding my guests’ expectations. I play around with lots of classic techniques and combos and reinvent or add my own spin or twist to them.

Owner is Jacky, she manufactures her crunchies and home bakes from home in Cape Town. More than 20 years ago as a single mom, unemployed, Jacky start-ed a small business on the side with flexible hours to take care of her family. This business she has created is giving the same opportunity to others to work from home. The core products are the pre packed crunchies, brownies and biscuits.

The business do sell other home bake product, the brownie pops is an item she created. Starting as an entrepreneur was a matter of putting food on the table. the business was never sustainable, challenge was getting more sales, even thou there were some catering work coming through.

The business was registered but Jacky was lacking information, she start a mind shift, mean educating herself, networking with other entrepreneurs, she started looking at business from a different perspective.

End of 2007 she enroll at Stellenbosch Small Business academy, she was ready for looking at her business differently with the help of others. The business platform have changes her day to day operation, even thou it felt like starting over, but this time it was with the end in mind.

Jacky vision was to inspire Xcellent Crunchies and Home bakes, in an excellent and sustainable way. The mission is to help local woman in the community to start similar businesses, create balance between making a living and mother-hood.

Being a stay at home mom, Jacky saw that there is a huge need for moms to be around home in our communities and be able to provide for their families, there a lack of information and entrepreneurial resource to assist local woman in starting a business and be with the families because both parents is working.

Now, Xcellent Crunchies and Home bakes needed a sustainable business model that can be replicated in our local communities. Running a business form home is very challenging; goals going forward are to create a space and location to run the business away from the house. A seperation from home and business space is essential to growing forward.

Getting a big contract with a catering company, to supply the with her goods is foremost on her mind, Jacky is placing some strategies in place for the next 12 months going forward, if she can gain a client like a Fedics.Jacky is setting the business up as a franchise model. The family is now part of the Team.

Xcellent Crunchies and Home bakes USP is the believe in doing something great, the best of both worlds, work from home, be around the family and own your own business.

Other challenges are to work on a better deliver service and distribution channel. Cash flow is a challenge but planning thing now is getting me more focus, if you know what you good at you make better decisions.

Dynamic ReadingWhy did l start my business?

I became aware during the years as a support teacher in a mainstream school of the highpercentage of students throughout grade levels that struggled as readers.

My passion for reading allowed me to create les-son plans and concepts that produced manysuccesses in the lives of my students.I branched out on my own and began my busi-ness by bringing my skills into my communityproducing one-on-one support after school hours.Dynamic Reading is established to reconnect the love and appreciation for reading to eachchild. Our students are continually encouraged to establish their own achievement levels andthey are decorated with motivation as they reach each milestone. At Dynamic Reading we pioneer to create a support system between parents, students and teachers embracing the child’s achievement and overcoming learning challenges.

What makes my programme different from anybody else?I believe that what sets my programme apart is the unique lessons tailored to fit theindividual child with the

attention focused on enhancing the child’s abilities creatively tograsp the concept of word formulation into sen-tence building.

Who is your target audience? My target audience are children Gr R-5 who has difficulty with reading, comprehension, pho-nics and writing of our national standard of the English language.

What does parents say about your type of teaching? The response from parents have been phenome-nal. As soon as Anthea implemented her lessons, we could see our daughter instantly enjoyed -truly enjoyed learning to read. Anthea was tactful and structured her lesson plan on Caitlin’sachievement level. She would advance vocabu-lary and reading text only when my daughter’s confidence in the material is achieved. Each session empowered Caitlin and the progress was remarkable.Anthea has managed to stimulate a love for read-ing, a confidence that transcends intoCaitlin’s everyday classroom.

Corlitte

We are very impressed with our son’s progress since he started with his reading lessons. Hisreading has improved so much. He started off

with having a code 2 and 3 for English. Hehas improved and now received a code 5 which to us as parents is a GREAT improvement. Our son has become more confident with her help.Natasha

What is it that l want to give back to the com-munity?I would like to empower the children and help them escape the restrictions and helplessnesstowards reading and to branch out into their academic potential.

Where do you see yourself in the next 4-5 years? My future plan is to have my own reading centre for children from diverse backgrounds.

Is it a worthwhile business and can one run it as a business to make money and earn a wage?It is most definitely a worthwhile business if you have a passion for children and reading. When l see the expression on their faces when they are able to read it is priceless.Being an entrepreneur is hard work. You have to continually research your market, establishtrust associated with your name and be disciplined in your financial planning.“Let your PASSION follow your PURPOSE and PERSEVERE ”

Entrepreneurship In and around Cape Town focused on Mitchells Plain...

My journey started in 2015 as a full time entrepreneur I had more than 8 years experience in the corporate world and I felt it is time to venture into the unknown. Today marks 3 years and I have not looked backed. It has been challenging but it was worth every sacrifice I made.

What is it like being a entrepreneur in Cape Town vs. anywhere else in the country...

That’s a good question I think Cape Town lacks resources and support... but I also don’t see this as a excuse as to why people can’t succeed in and around Cape Town... I have been doing my business here for the last 3 years and I survived...but I still feel if the local people start spending their monies on locals we can actually stimulate our local economy and create more jobs.

I meet up in other provinces with entrepreneurs then I realize that they way better off cause youngster are being groomed and they are awarded big contracts.

I think Cape Town lack of older people just doesn’t want to let go and make way for the youth. However I can say that I have been attending a lot of Government functions and events with young entrepreneurs and I can real-ly see a brighter future.

Do you think government is doing enough to support entrepreneurs?

Firstly I don’t believe in hand outs I can blame everyone else accept me as to why I am not successful. I think they play a integral part but I don’t think it’s entirely up to them to ensure we are successful, that’s totally dependable on how proactive you are as a person.

And how you want to see your business grow this is a sales environment and even if you have a billion rands that support you if you have no clients you have no business.

What do you see as a challenge other entrepreneur might have why does most business lapse after 3 years...

That’s a good question and the simple answer sustainability and diversifica-tion... let me tell you most business don’t succeed because the business is the entrepreneur only form of income... let me make a example I sell apples my kids are at home hungry I need to pay my debts so my profit I use to feed them and pay debts.. How does my business grow? Unless I do another cash injection... our entrepreneurs don’t think long term... ask me with how many companies or business I am involved with many... my eggs are not in one basket. Lastly my product booms as a entrepreneur what do I do I buy flashy things instead of buying assets that can generate income and you don’t have to work another day in your life... so it boils down to control and setting long term goals rather than overnight sensation.

You sound goal oriented what would you say is achievable in a short space of time and for a start up what advice will you give.

How many entrepreneurs have a business but no business plan? Right now I know where I want my business to be in the next 10 years. I have a road map. There is so many opportunities for a start up to advertise their busi-ness online... believe me I don’t know if I would still be around if it was not for the Internet it makes things so easy. Finding info and clients has become so easy right now I can take out my phone and advertise my business on several platforms free of charge... then still I hear some people say they failed because they didn’t have money or they had no money to start up. You start with an idea you don’t need money many people say you need money to make money I sat you need creativity to generate money.

How do you face challenges and setbacks?

That’s a good question because not everyone can handle pressure and being en entrepreneur is truly the most stressful career you could possibly choose for yourself... I think doubt plays a big role in one’s life and how you believe... when obstacles do come my way I tent to take a step back and look at several ways of how to deal with it I’ll even seek advice and then compile what I have in front of me and make a informed decision...on set-backs now that’s what we don’t want but if you lose you lose brush your the dust off and move on... this is not like a relationship where you going into depression because you lose a partner no this is about finding the next deal and always being ahead I never take a no I change a no into not now... it’s happened a lot where I may be counted a chicken before it hatch and I had a setback but that set back was a set up for what was ahead which ultimate-ly was something better and greater.

Last word from you Jerome

I would like to appeal to our local communities to start supporting local businesses. We spend all our monies on business that takes profits out of our community. What do these businesses give back to us nothing? So before you as a client buy something thing about the local person that will stimulate our economy then giving your monies to people that don’t care.. And for my fellow entrepreneurs don’t give up think sales, sales, sales em-ploy someone to do the admin you just focus on sales and you will survive.

“DO IT , DO IT RIGHT AND DO IT RIGHT NOW”

Thanks

Name: Ayoob AbdullahBusiness name: Quicktrip BakeryWhat phase is your business in :( talk, start, build or growth)Website URL: Social media links:https://www.facebook.com/TheBakingBoss/

Our HistoryThe bakery was taken over 6 years ago by my family. Its being run by my mother, my brother and myself.

My mother Zeenat Abdullah is literally the mother figure of the bakery. The staff all know her as mama. She the person every-one goes to when they need advice. She is the mother figure to all those working there. She come from a financial service back-ground but she is like a chameleon is the sense that you can put her in any situation and she ca adapt to her surroundings. She had no background on running a business but what she has managed to do in these 6 years has been fantastic to say the least.

She has taught taken the bakery from not making novelty takes to not only making them but being know for making beautiful cakes at very reasonable prices. She has taught us to show compassion towards cus-tomers. Its not about the money, its about helping people out and making their spe-cial day more memorable. She is the matri-arch of the business. My brother, Ayoob, is the more experi-enced of the 3 of us. He has been in the bakery business since the young age of 16. He’s the guy you can go to and ask about anything bakery related and hell give you advice. He has a passion for that place and has seen it grow from strength the strength in the past 6 years.

Then theres me, Zaimah. After having studied for years, practicing required me to move away from my family and after I fell ill I came back home and decided to help the family in the business. I have the least experience of all my family members hav-ing only been the for 2 years. My role at the bakery is to run the bakery on a day to day basis. Since being there I’ve learnt so much from my brother and my mother. My brother and I have both had training in cake decorating which I try to focus on as much as possible. My Father Shaamiel is also at the bakery. He still works at he’s current job so he is not physically at the bakery as much as the 3 of us there. But he acts like the maintenance guy when he is there, a role which he thoroughly enjoys.

Quicktrip Bakery is in Portlands Mitchells Plain. We do rolls, cakes, fancies, savories as well as novelty cakes for birthdays, weddings, confirmations etc.Well with us being a bakery that appeals to a lot of people from all ages, we don’t have a specific target audience.

Our motto is “Every batch from Scratch”. You may wonder why we use it. We making most almost all our products from scratch. We don’t particularly like using premixes unless we have to and thats what makes community bakeries more special than the bigger chain bakeries. We also want to give the community the best tasting and freshest products on a daily basis.Social media impacted us tremendously as it has allowed to showcase our work and what we have to offer on a daily basis. It also allows us the opportunity for us to be easily accessible for people looking to place orders. As a business that is situated in a community you do whatever it takes to support that community where you give donations, get involved in campaigns to help uplift the community. It’s our way of thanking the community and customers for their support on a daily basis.Starting a business is not just about the money that you’re going to making, you are going to have to make some major sacrifices if you want to succeed. But you will never know what you’re capable of if you don’t try.

Jacobs Garden is dedicated to sustainable, prof-itable and unique agricultural products. Our mission is to produce and grow quality, specialty greens, baby vegetables and fruits to supply local restaurants and consumers on the Cape Flats in Cape Town, Western Cape. Our goals include high quality products to sell both wholesale and retail. Production methods include new technology uti-lizing sustainable agriculture and best manage-ment practices. We hope to increase production by 20% and sales by 30% in the next five years.

Jacobs Garden is owned and operated by Wilwee-na Fortune. The Home farm has two round style greenhouses for production and to reduce pro-duction risk. The Jacobs Garden has been farming for 2 years and is relatively new to the industry even. The enterprise is a part-time venture since Wilweena work off the farm.

Through market research it is evident that con-sumers are interested in high end specialty prod-ucts.

There is a move toward health and local that will benefit our operation. Some limitations include time and labors to devote to the operation and being new growers we are still learning. Our ad-vantage is the specialty aspect as well as season extension.

Responding to change, Jacobs Garden was started to improve the future of growing and supplying premium, clean, secure, fresh food to customers who care about what they eat and the world they live in.We are determined to be the best solution to growing food of the highest quality and taste, in the most sustainable way, with the least waste and environmental impact. And to grow it in beautiful urban farms back close to where people live and eat.

The team at Jacobs Garden, working with re-searchers at University of cape town, will contin-ually improve one of the purest, most productive and efficient soilless food growing systems in the world.

Using around 70% less water than conventional growing methods, no herbicides or toxic chemi-cal pesticides and working to a ‘zero waste’ policy, Pure farming for the future and caring about the food you eat.

We are planning to expand the farm operation. Production in the current greenhouses can be in-creased as well asadding 2 to 3 more greenhous-es in the next five years. Most of our competitive is the Big Co-Operative Farmers in Philippi.

Goals & Objectives

* Grow high quality specialty greens, baby vege-tables and fruits for wholesale and retail markets.* Production methods are economically feasible as well as utilizing sustainable agriculture and best management practices.

* Increase production from small holding a year to 300 cases for greens and produce 9,000 pints of raspberries in the next two years. We will also begin a specialty vegetable enterprise.

* Increase sales from R4, 000 to R8, 000 for greens and begin marketing raspberries at T15 a pint in the next two years.

* We will attend courses on production and man-agement to increase profitability. Wilweena will be the main source of labor. Seasonal help may be hired for markets or greenhouse work.

“The real wealth of this nation is its soil , it’s our greatest natural resource,” she explains. “My goal is to use soil for its highest and best purpose, which is to grow food.”

Growing vegetables is a very easy task and can be done no matter where a person lives. Even the tiniest of apartments can have windowsill gardens where herbs or smaller vegetables like Roma tomatoes can be grown.

The simplest way to start a garden is by obtaining potting soil and plant containers from local garden centers or from neighbors who already garden. This method works best for those who want smaller gardens or have less space.

For people with more space and greater gardening ambitions, plant beds or a raised bed garden can be bought or constructed and are advantageous for those who don’t have the best soil condi-tions or who live in areas where the soil contains contaminants.

A basic plant bed consists of four wooden planks that are connected and form a rectangular or square shape and separate the areas full of wanted plants from grass and/or other non-wanted plants (also known as “weeds”). The following resource goes more in-depth on how to create a raised bed garden:

One look at Jacob’s garden, and you know the garden designer and cmother will never go hungry. Nearly 60 kinds of plants, vegetables, and herbs fill the beds, borders, and pots in her front yard alone, and vibrant color comes not from blooms but from crimson tomatoes and other ;uscious greens..,

VALERIE’S CLEANING SERVICES

As Valerie started her manufacturing business of producing household cleaning products, she had already planned out her way forward. The busi-ness mission is the development of a environmentally friendly distribution company that uses grassroots and network marketing techniques to sell the product and make a meaningful contribution to the environment. Valerie cleaning services was started because Valerie was retiring and wanted to do something to still keep her active in that trade. She started the business from home.

Valerie got involves sourcing of credible material suppliers with green or earth friendly cleaning chemicals. She research as what household chemi-cals her business will start off with and package and brand her product to appeal to you intended audience. Also she knew that her customers may need labeling that have more detail than the name of chemical.

Valerie sells products to two customer segments. The first segment is indi-vidual consumers who are purchasing the products for personal (house-hold) use. The second target segment is a select group from within the first segment of individual customers. Some of these individuals will be recruit-ed to become distributors (agents).

Valerie Cleaning services is an exciting new business that channels indi-viduals’ passion for making a positive contribution to the environment and the ability to make money while sharing this passion with friends and colleagues.

To create a profitable company that sells environmentally friendly cleaning products.Design an organization that compensates individuals for sales made by other people that they recruit.Design a more efficient marketing machine that does away with the ineffi-cient traditional distribution systems.

The business has incurred the following expenses for the start-up phases of the organization.Storage space: This will be used for the storage of product inventory. While Valerie Cleaning services could get away with a smaller space such as a room in Valerie’s home, she is able to achieve costs breaks by purchasing larger quantities and will take these discounts and place the inventory in storage.Valerie needs to buy two mixing machines, very expensive equipe-ment.

She has incurred fees in the set up of the business, Personalized with a logo, return addresses, etc. for catalogs, and brochures, and The office is located in Valerie’s house in Strandfontein village, Cape Town.

How do I know that my product is market-ready?

Valerie Cleaning services in essence leverages peoples relationships and networking skills. It creates the ability to be your own boss, making sales pitches to friends and associates on your time schedule. It creates a com-mon woman, grassroots implementation of a real world distribution chan-nel.Valerie Cleaning services, recognizing that so many traditional cleaning agents are toxic for the environment, it then becomes relatively easy for her customers to make a positive contribution. This attitude follows the slogan “think globally, act locally.” Buying these products allows them to do their part. Her business sees as the market demands more outlets for her products it is likely that more retailers will begin to sell her environmentally friendly cleaning products.

George De Boer Address your Bin

I started 5 years ago when my wheelie bin was stolen numerous times. Then the idea of marking my bin in a professional took place. The marking should be visible and can be removed.

The ball started rolling ideas come up research started, looking for a machine to mark information onto the bin without damag-ing it. The hot stamp come up but was not successful results lost of fund was huge, error and trial continued.

Ideas and opportunities don’t just materialize out of thin air. I George coming from a background of admin working all the years, my schooling of 30 year back started kicking in and was a great. Then started putting my ideas to paper and come up with a machine that can engrave the info on the bin.

History is full of people who in the face of failure diversion and distraction strayed off course anyway achieving their dreams regardless of the roadblocks in our path. South Africa is not pro-ducing anything at this time there no one looking for us because they everyone just wants to posse with the success story.

ClaGoo Printers was originally Jazzy Beads, it started in 2008, when I had sold another business and I wanted to venture into something different, in 2010 I needed the assistance of Michele Goodman on a part time basis as at that time even though we were only selling costume jewelry at markets, to friends and at various work places I needed to produce more over a short period of time. In 2011 when beading prices started to increase I looked at other forms of in-come hence ClaGoo Printers and Beads was born.

Apart from creating an income for myself I felt that the people in my community also needed the exposure to buying locally produced goods. In 2013 the company name was then changed to ClaGoo Printers as the market in Strandfontein was being flooded with beaded jewelry but also cheaper imports. I at the time planned to create a comprehensive one stop print shop, where people could come and have their business cards, flyers, promotional items done in one place.

I looked at the local market and realized that there were many crafters, small business own-ers who did not have the support or the tools to market their products via business cards, flyers or even adverts and I wanted to assist them.I am a community driven person, I look at servic-ing the community locally, I assist people from all backgrounds, ages. I assist children with internet searches for their homework or projects, I assist the unemployed by compiling and typing up their c.v’s, by doing job searches and basic computer training.

I have a much neglected facebook page, I do not advertise, I am recommended to people and word of mouth works for me. I at times use flyers and

posters.Currently we are in the process of registering ClaGoo Printers as a nonprofit company as both I and the finance person are gainfully employed elsewhere, however our marketing manager who is a volunteer is unemployed but so invested in the community as well.

Sadly .0001% of the population in Strandfontein supports us, most of our business is sourced out-side the area, we do not receive funding, nor have we applied. We see the printing company as a non-profit as what has been happening is that we plough the proceeds of our earnings back into the community by hosting holiday programs, during winter we concentrated on feeding the children and some elderly in the community. What keeps the business from closing and what makes me get up and excited daily is the fact that there is a need for business people to give back to the communities that they live in or derive sales from, What gets me excited is that I wish to be a part of something big, something positive and something life changing and even though the ClaGoo Foundation NPC as its now called has limited income we make it work, we think out of the box and we diversify when it comes to creat-ing streams of income.

Projects and businesses, we support are depen-dent on our advice or financial contribution, we cannot let them down! We refuse to allow the lack of turnover to determine the outcome of the plans we have put in place for 2018 even if it meant that members make a personal contribu-tion. We are small but robust, we are resilient and we are deeply committed to changing lives, even if it be the life of one individual in Strandfontein.

For a business to succeed in today’s fast paced digital environment it is im-portant to maintain a solid presence online. But this isn’t easy. If you’re already interested in digital marketing and what it can do for your business you’ll know there is a lot to learn, and that the learning never stops, according to Mr Lawrence from Lawrence media.

Digital knowledge and advice is in high demand. If you’d like to know where to start when creating a digital marketing strategy, or where businesses most often go wrong, call Lawrence media...

Social Media has had a huge impact. Business owners and managers have learned that there is a lot that they can do for themselves to engage with their marketplace. The impact of tablets and smartphones has enabled business people to manage their digital footprint from almost anywhere. However, there are large numbers of businesses who use Social Media because they’ve been told that “it’s a good thing” but they don’t really understand the whys and wherefores – a lot like the early days of the internet.

Social Media will continue to have a major impact, although whether it’s the sites we use today remains to be seen – the internet is always evolving. Better mobile data packages will see more and more activity whilst on the move – in particular video related. Live streaming, currently provided by Meerkat and Periscope and others, may provide millions with the opportunity for live pro-motions and interaction.

Businesses need to understand their markets so that they use the Social Media platforms that their clients are using rather than simply relying on where the media tell them to go. Facebook’s great, for example, with its billion users but if clients are not expecting to find a business there then all effort expended will be wasted and it would be easy to condemn all Social Media based on this.

Too many businesses see Social Media as a broadcast medium and fail to understand how to engage with their connections and then wonder why noth-ing is working. Websites still look pretty and the User Experience is still not fully understood which means businesses continue to invest wastefully in the development of new sites without understanding the flaws with existing sites.

Understanding what your customer base wants, looking for creative and clever ways to separate yourself from the competition and always looking out for new opportunities.
