Trust Board Members recently hosted a farewell dinner for the departing Executive Director John O’Sullivan, who was presented with a print of the John Rundle painting of Parliament Buildings.

Trust farewells John O’Sullivan

This year the Trust has received 16 applications from Members of Parliament to undertake a Business Study Attachment. Two National List MPs have already completed their attachments - Katrina Shanks with Coca-Cola and Paul Goldsmith with Progressive Enterprises.

Katrina Shanks wrote: “During the September recess I had an action packed week with Coca-Cola Oceania and Coca-Cola Amatil. Through my visit I was able to get an understanding of what goes under the cap of Coca-Cola products and I was given an up-close and personal look at the product.

Having a business attachment with a truly global corporation produced a fantastic insight into how companies with many international limbs work together with the wider body. It was especially interesting to see how Coca-Cola worked in the New Zealand context.

As a result, the attachment challenged my thinking around the role corporations play in our economy, community and environment. It offered me a new perspective in my role as a legislator, helping me to understand the far-reaching impact of decisions made here in Parliament.”

Paul Goldsmith described his attachment to Progressive Enterprises as a “marvellous opportunity to deepen my understanding of a large and important part of the New Zealand economy” .

Paul had the opportunity to spend a significant amount of time with the Managing Director, Dave Chambers, as well as observing and interacting with key staff from the marketing, Human Resources and finance sections of the organisation. He also had the opportunity to visit the company’s meat works as well as a Countdown Supermarket.

One aspect that did impress Paul on his visit was the passion for the business that he observed within the company.

An enthusiastic group of 39 attendees was welcomed by the President of the Trust, Dr The Right Honourable Lockwood Smith, to the 54th Parliamentary Seminar held on Wednesday 18 July.

This was the first opportunity for the Prime Minister to address a Seminar in 2012 and the first time that David Shearer, as the Leader of the Opposition, had addressed a Seminar.

Seminar participants commented how impressed they were with both speakers and the frankness with which they spoke

providing insights into their respective roles.

The attendees visited the Maori Affairs Committee Room to observe the examination of the 2012/13 Estimates of Appropriations for Vote: Treaty Negotiations.

Over 20 Associate Members attended the buffet luncheon providing the opportunity for the Seminar participants to talk to Members of Parliament about their Parliamentary roles and responsibilities, as

well as their experiences of Business Study Attachments.

Common themes from the feedback on the day were:

“The range of speakers and the depth they went into was fantastic. It is a real privilege to have had such an opportunity.”

“Very interesting common themes emerge irrespective of party and

position. Surprising how open speakers were.”

“I think it is an excellent programme that makes good use of the short amount of time available to enable greater understanding of the roles of Parliament, Ministers and MPs.”

Seminars continue to provide great insights

Rt Hon John Key, Prime Minister and Leader of the National Party, addresses the seminar participants on “Exercising Government through Parliament”, watched by Trust Chairman, Sir John Goulter.

David Shearer, Leader of the Opposition and Leader of the Labour Party, speaks on the topic “The Opposition in Parliament”.

Chris Hipkins, Chief Whip of the Labour Party, takes part in the joint session “The Business of the House” with Government Whip, Michael Woodhouse, and Fay Paterson, Clerk-Assistant (House).

The first President’s Dinner for the year was held on Tuesday 26 June.

President’s Dinners commenced in 1996, with a guest list of 57, hosted by the then President of the Trust, Speaker Hon Sir Peter Tapsell. Since then smaller dinners have become the norm and to date, 36 such dinners have been held with a total of 245 attendees.
